› Forum › RESCUE EFFORTS FOR SHELTERS › HERR update and new buns
Just a little update now, we’ve had one bunny adopted and this weekend we have two more going into foster homes making five bunnies in foster care!!
My Moose is going though I’m sure I’m going to cry It’s the best thing for him though, he’s remarkably sweet and cuddly. Some of you may see the resemblance and know why I fell hard for this little guy…
And heres piccies of our new bunnies! (They are getting added to the site tonight *fingers crossed*)
Roger (bonded with Bunbun)
And his boyfriend Bunbun
Norman (came to us as the owner said she had allergies, but the energy level on this guy and the fact that his nails had never been trimmed…I think she was just in way over her head and intimidated by him) . He’s Norman like Norman Bates, as in Psycho LOL
And Guss our newest addition. The owner couldn’t keep him but didn’t want to give us him with his cage (the only way we could take him since we were full) because she wanted to get a new animal She was put on a waiting list but called me last week to say we could take him with his cage. He’d also never had his nails trimmed and didn’t get out much, apparently she was scared of him because he’s really viscous and once bit her fingernail off Which after meeting him, is questionable because he’s a super sweet cuddly little bunny!!
i love Moose too! he’s sweet, i like the white nose! they are all such beautiful bunnies…
that’s frustrating about Guss and her not wanting to give up the cage. good for you for sticking with your guns and she had no choice… lol.
i don’t suppose you can ship to Ohio huh? ;o)
Of course! And for a limited time only with your rabbit adoption you get a free pot bellied pig and a horse! (heheh that’s the joke around our shelter!)
“uh honey… i got a surprise for you…”
Wow, I would want to adopt them all! Good for you for sticking to your decision (about needing the cage) maybe she will think twice before she gets another pet that she will only tire of anyway. It makes me so mad when people are “in love” with a cute, cuddly baby but lose interest as it gets older…not to mention not bothering to research and care for properly- as I can only assume the bunny was not neutered and only would have helped her to keep her pet if she had bothered to care that much.
Ugh, and she gave me a bag of yogurt drops when I picked him up too….YUCK!
Hahaha, since Mike is a bit dubiousabout the bunnies being in the lounge room during ‘family time’ he may have a slight problem witha pot-bellied pig & a horse joining the fray.
Hahaha,Beka!
“uh honey… i got a surprise for you…”
i wouldn’t have to vacuum anymore, i’d just throw bales of hay around…
Why wouldn’t she want to give you the cage? I would certainly question this…I totally agree with Katnip Crazy on this as well. In fact I would insist on this from all your owner surrenders (even if you do not need the cage) you just take the cage and throw it out to deter them from getting another rabbit.
She wanted to get another pet, some kind of pet, she had no idea what…I’d suggest one of those electronic ones for how terrible she did with him….
Hey K&K, even AI pets need luv too! ~_~
Do Alaskans get a discount on the shipping of the bunny, pig and horse? ^_^
Of course!! Hehehe
Oh cool! Sign me up! ^_^
I finally got the piccies to come in…I’ll take Norman and Guss-Guss! ^_^ Good Lord, WHO in the world could not coddle those adorable babies??
Mimz I have to share, apparently the owner of Norman was allergic, but I don’t know…he’s so energetic and crazy (hence Norman…he’s norman bates lol!!) that, yeah…and Guss was apparently viscious and took his owners finger nail clean off LOLOLOL he’s ones of the sweetest buns I’ve ever met, very energetic but I poked my finger all over and didn’t even get an exploratory nip! He definitely doesn’t bite…
LOL
So yes, pick a pony and piggie and we’ll send them on up to you!!!
..I wish, cuz then I’d know for sure they’d be getting a great home!!!
On the horse rescue, just a tidbit, three of our horses went to a family I know through work…Two of them were seized in a cruelty case and headed for slaughter before we stepped in….End result was two badly neglected baby horses and a pony (from elsewhere) get to go be pets for life and not work ever, for millionaires!!! Thats what I call success!!!
I love horses, K&K. I used to live with horses as a baby. My (step)father (also happened to be my maternal grandfather) told me about how he raised Arabians for the San Mateo Mounted Police. My (step)mom bred Weimeraners. (sp?) This was all at the same time, right after they adopted me. Both sets of animals were trained to a whistle. When my mom would go out and whistle for the dogs at mealtimes, the horses would begin going through their paces in the corral. All of them would mix together. Talk about chaos!
But in my old age, I am sadly now so allergic to horses even when the wind blows from the paddock next door, I begin sneezing terribly and if I get close to a horse, I can’t breathe…my throat closes up. It tears me up because I would love to ride. There’s no greater feeling than being on the back of a horse.
I wouldn’t care HOW rambunctious Norman is…my Lord he is precious! ^_^ Mimzy is a ball of energy when he gets out too, ironically it’s worst at the vets, where he should just be huddling in a corner. ~_~ I had both of them on the exam table the other day and I could NOT hold him, he kept wanting to explore and would nip at me if I tried to stop him, so I had to put him back in his carrier to wait for the doc to look at him. So, I’m hip when it comes to spazz buns. ^_^
I think if I could get the opportunity to adopt a needy black furred lop I would NOT be able to resist. My husband would probably move out in disgust, but that would just be too bad. lolz….
And SHAME on you, poking poor little Guss-Guss! Just you wait, you’ll find holes in your socks or poopies in an inconvenient place or…or….SOMETHING! ^_^ He’ll get you back for that!
They are both adorable and I have no doubt they will get snapped up. Who could resist them?
Bravo to you for finding homes for the horses too! It’s great to see them when they have nothing more to do that eat and sleep and roll in fields of green!
Awww that’s too bad you’re so allergic!! I think Guss has forgiven me for the poking, he chases me around humping my legs LOL!!
Oh dear…not neutered? 0_o That’s not good news. But they have a cure for that you know.
They are still adorable.
Oh yes, out of all the bunnies we’ve taken in only two came neutered…..And all but two are males, so as you can see I’m sure we *know* why they were being given up!!
Oh my! *headdesk* I don’t understand why people don’t think about this kind of thing beforehand. I mean with cats and dogs too. So many need homes in shelters, do we really need to make MORE babies?
Of course, it’s about the same way with human babies too. Sad world.
Are any of the females pregnant, do you know yet?
And geez, hopefully the horses aren’t in such dire straits as well! 0_o
If I were out west, Norman would be adopted in half a second. He reminds me of my bridge bunny, Velvet. I just can’t understand anyone owning a rabbit like that and not be head over heels.
One female we caught in a yard and one was at auction; But we have had both for over a month with no babies so we are good!
On a lighter note, one of the kids who volunteers with the horses came and got me to tell me Sandy was pregnant…Sandy’s a boy!! He’s just filling out, he’s a lop/flemish giant and growing big! Heheheeh
K&K this is perfect because more than anything I want to get a boyrfriend for Smudge, a pot-belly pig (I’ve wanted one since I was little) although I’m pretty sure we can’t have them in the city in Calgary but I’ve been trying to look into it, do you know if you can have them in the city in Edmonton? Anyways no big deal I will have to move to a farm because in a few years I want to have a horse as well! Hahah so if you could just hold onto that deal for about I dunno a year or two I’ll be set! Or ya know I’ll take it now… my dad has an acreage…. that would go well..
Dad: Sam I woke up today and there is a horse on that huge section of the land we don’t really use…. and it looks like it has a pet pig, and they have quite the comfy set up do you know anything about that?
Sam: Wow that’s so strange, I bet it was Quinten… you know those 3 year olds they just bring home anything they can from the park…..
Also on a more serious note…. haha I’ve been trying to find good information on pot belly pigs I’ve looked at many sites but as with buns theres ALOT of conflicting info. Do you have a good website or is there a rescue site of some sort? It really is something I’d like to know more about especially if I do own some land later on cause I’d like them to have space but I’d just love to cuddle up on the couch with a pig lol yeah I’m weird…
Here’s a couple on care we found when we got them home, we did alot of research but the first night we had to guess as it was eleven pm when we got them home and they had to be bottle fed!! We fed goats milk, baby rice pablum and fruit baby food. Turned out to be exactly what we should have done (phew!).

As for having them in the city I would assume your humane society would likely know for sure, here’s the contact for them
http://www.calgaryhumane.ca/
If not city zoning is good; I can’t quite find the contact info but here’s the site. Anyone who tells you it IS ok to have one, have them give it to you in writing
Norman is my favorite! I have a soft spot for black bunnies. I am glad to see that you’re getting some successful adoptions, although it is hard to see your babies go. I love going to your web site by the way, I ooh and aah over the pictures all the time.
Ahhh thanks
can you repost the link to the rescue, i can’t seem to find it…
thank you! i still can’t get over how well put together that site is!
Thanks Beka!! Dave’s revamping it I’m miffed cuz I like it the way it is, but he wants to set it up so I can do all the updating/posting and he can back off and do less work…so I guess that’s fair
Another update; We’ve actually become a little more famous (not sure if that’s good? ) and the Calgary humane society has contacted us, saying all the local rescues referred us (!!) and they need us to take some of their rabbits as they have too many. We’re stretched so I told them we could if they could spay/neutere them first…We’ll see what they say, but we may be making a road trip to Calgary to save some rabbits!!
The website is very calming, it’s full of calm colours lol.
That’s great that your getting a reputation for being a good rabbit rescue! Although being stretched to capacity and taking on more bunnies is going to be difficult!
I LOVE your new scales to tell people about your buns! That’s so great and honest and informative!
I still want Priscilla (and a pony…could you hold the pig, though?).
But I can see how you fell in love with Moose. He looks like Thumper, whom I’d bun-nap, except BF would be mad…
Can I have them both? And a side-order of a larger apartment so I have someplace to keep them all?
Oh you certainly can have them both, and what color pony would you like?
Ohhh I guess a couple more updates!
I have three new volunteers!! I have one coming Saturday and he’s going to come on weekends and give the buns more out time and handling. Two are coming on Tuesday (well really I’m bringing them, neither drive or have a car, and both live in the same end of town, so thought I’d just drive ’em out together). Those will be less helpful because they’ll only be able to go when I go and can pick them up, but still more hands!!
Going to Calgary next weekend to get five bunnies. Have one more foster home (one of our horse volunteers).
We’re still working on the revamping of the website, spent hours last night (In between delivering a kitty to her new home) and I think we’re nearing the end! I am finding Petfinder.com to be such a valuable resource for just nice ideas for the website, the shelters, fundraising etc etc.
You can see what the new site looks like here:
http://new.radrabbits.com/
It will go onto http://www.radrabbits.com when it’s finished, so basically your seeing a rough draft at the other address…I really liked the old site, but this one is set up so I can constantly update it myself; Dave was tired of doing it and I was tired of waiting for him to squeeze it into his schedule; So it’s a change but I think it will allow us to stay more current; Plus it allows users to comment so I think that’s important
*runs off to see if there’s any new piccies of Norman*
that looks awesome! i agree, those scales are great!
That is an excellent idea, the scales. I hadn’t noticed them before. (Actually, I’d thought the page hadn’t loaded for me-browsing with Firefox-and then I saw the pix and the scales above them. Cool idea!)
lolz…wouldn’t want to think about rating my bunnies like that though. I think in all but litter training they’d get low scores. >.<
Thank goodness for the new volunteers - don’t want you to burn out. New site is lookin’ good!
Love the three Model buns on the header banner!
Oh and for the record…….. I WALLY !
Thanks all!!!
I got the idea for the scales from horse ads…generally people score them on personality and then put stuff like if they ‘load lead tie’ etc etc. and I think giving more info on them really makes them ‘real’ in peoples minds and makes them choose them. So far it helped three be chosen sight unseen for fostering!!!
I love Moose too. He would be the buns I would have been interested in if I didn’t already have all I can handle.
I recently adopted two more…I wanted a friend for Pearl (lonely in her bedroom) and I went out and looked at two that people were dumping theirs. Both were suppose to be boys so I knew, I had to pick one or the other.
I fell in love with both and luckily for me, and for both of them, one turned out to be a girl.
Now I have 2 new friends for Pearl.
The male I’ve named Cosmo is a chinchilla, very cuddly and calm but also very hormonal right now. He’s being neutered on Monday.
Female is a little 4 mth old holland lop I call Amanda. She’s quite opinionated and so darned cute. She acts like she owns the house already.
Both were living in outdoor hutches…different homes though.
Cosmo was in a very small hutch but did have a lightbulb and lot’s of hay to keep him warm. I’m sure he never went without food or drink. His family appeared very decent, just no time for him. He’s in fine shape, no fat and lot’s of muscle. Lovely coat.
Amanda was a kids pet and they didn’t take care of her anymore (neither did the parents it appeared). Her hutch was on the ground. The first night I brought her home, she ate and drank non stop. I had to take out her food for fear of it doing her harm. She was skinny but already is putting on some weight. I could not leave her in that situation.
So, now with 5, I’m full.
Cosmo and Pearl I’m sure will be no problem bonding. Little Amanda, I’m not sure. She’s still young but I think she may be the bossy type.
I know I could not do the rescue thing. I’d get far far too attached in a very short time. I’d never want to part with anyone. End up with a gazillion buns.
Which rabbits are you taking in from Calgary?
I totally agree with you Sarita and Katnip. It should be a package deal to make it “not so easy” to just go out and get another rabbit.
So I’ve been checking in on HERR site last few days to see if Calgary Crew have made it on there yet………not to put pressure on anyone or anything!
Site is evolving really well. There so many services! Got a wee little suggestion; for the adoptables, could you add a thumbnail picture? I know there’s a bigger picture once you click on their name – just thinking online browsers may stop and look further if they see a bun they like. Whereas a name might not attract them as much at first.
ie. Looks come first for attraction in this case!
Anyway, it’s all shaping up wonderfully and it’s awesome to see it all come about! Thanks for that!
That’s a good idea jerseygirl, I’d love to do that; have to pressure Dave to show me how to do that!
The new crew will be up soon, we are doing some photos this week-
Their are four red eyed white male lops-“Abra” “Cadabra” “Hocus” and “Pocus” We’re thinking about bonding them into pairs.
The female is Tabitha, she’s fawn colored and quite large, spayed; Shes very territorial about her cage, but very sweet.
