I am so confused… I have seen a few bun sites that sell rabbit toys using yucca in their wooden toys. They say rabbits like to chew on it just like wood. I found something online that said yucca has a small amount of a toxin that is cooked out when prepared appropriately.

Dr.Fosters site  has yucca in some of their bird toys and in the information area it says that the yucca comes from mexico where it is cooked for several hours before its shipped to them.

I bought yucca at the local superstore. It is related to potatoes so its starchy. I baked it for 4 hours and it just turns hard as a rock. I did show it to Hoopie who took it from my hand, dropped it on the floor and never looked at it again. lol

I figured I would just abandon this whole idea of trying to make a toy out of it but wanted to get opinions..I know bunnybytes.com sells bun toys w/ yucca.

Anyone have experience with yucca and their buns?

The toxicity issue is from the live plant.   Before I started selling the Yucca “wheelies”, which are yucca chews, I did a research, discussed this thoroughly with the supplier, with my vet and a botonist.  I can’t speak for all yucca chews because I don’t sell other’s products, but in general, the dried yucca is safe.

Check out another thread that had similar concerns – you’ll see my answer at the very bottom explaining in more detail about toxicity etc.

What you will find is the toxic scare of Yucca usually comes from one main source and that is the main list of toxic plants from the APSCA, and they don’t differentiate what part of plant it is, whether it’s been dried, and that really makes a difference.  That’s like saying apple trees are toxic, which you do have to be careful with the leaves and sticks should cut from the tree and dried out, but that doesn’t mean that the sticks from trees then are toxic.   Hope that makes sense.

Well yucca chews are chew toys usually. Though dried powdered yucca has been used in treatments and food, what we’re talking about are the toys that are used mostly for birds and small animals. Sort of a roundish soft wood (a bit softer than pine).

Oops Im sorry I didn’t do a search before I asked. Thank you binky. It is so strange to see something that is a “root” look like wood. I also received an email from Jennifer that runs bunnybytes.com and she told me the same thing as well and that hers she said are dried as well. But I know that Dr.Fosters&Smith have theirs cooked. Interesting…

But as a people food Yucca seems to be quite popular!

No worries. it really is something that needs to be clarified more on the toxicity lists.

I had gotten 2 yucca chews from bb site and mine loved it.    As for eating it I have never been able to cook it right.  So I have not messed with it since then.
