Grace got sick a couple days ago with what we think was the beginning of stasis – her poops were coming out very mucus-y (I know, *gag*) and she wasn’t eating her pellets.  We took her to the vet the next morning (my husband extended her pen that night and SLEPT IN IT because sometimes she would grind her teeth and he wanted to be there to comfort her!) The vet gave her a pain shot, and two motility drugs, and recommended that we force feed with critical care until she started eating on her own.

So we’ve been force feeding the critical care for two days and when I gave her the critical care and water half of it was on her chin, almost half was on the floor and about 5% went down her throat   So today I decided that it was because the critical care smells pretty icky.  So I concocted a critical care smoothie with banana, and she ate the whole thing down and even tried to chew on the syringe to get more out!

Here is how I made it:

I blended a cup of water and half of a banana in my blender, basically to make “banana water” – and then I used that to add to the critical care to get the critical care to the consistency I wanted – I didn’t make it too watery.  The only thing to be careful of is to really blend the banana and water so you don’t get any chunks that get stuck in the syringe.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else has any mixes they do with their critical care? I’d love to try a couple new ones on Grace and maybe we can compile a little recipe list!

For Baytril I used small piece of canned pear and pear juice.  Ground everything up and he just loved it.

              I hope Gracie is better.

I sometimes put carrot or banana baby food in my CC – I’m not 100% it makes it more palatable or not for the rabbits. Are you using the Banana/Apple flavored CC? I think that’s the flavor.

I think I’m using the apple flavored critical care – not sure exactly what it is but it is quite..stinky…I definitely would spit it out if someone was syringing it in my mouth!

Great advice!! I’ve tried mixing it with baby food before but I bet Banana would have them snorking it down no problem!

Auntie Heather mixes the unsweetened organic canned pumpkin in with the Critical Care to make a slurry that she then feeds using a spoon if a bunny prefers that to the syringe. She says that the pumpkin has a lot of fiber, and bunnies like the taste, so it is good for appetite stimulation too.

I haven’t mixed anything in before, but it is a great idea because the plain critical care just seems so ick. I haven’t tried the flavored ones before so don’t know if that would make a difference.

OH, and before I forget–HOW SWEET of your husband to make sure she wasn’t alone in her pain, and he could be there to comfort her. AWE!

                        How is she doing?!

I just did a google search for Critical Care for rabbits and came up with two links on where you can buy it:

                          http://www.bunnybunchboutique.com/firstaid2.html

                          http://this-little-piggie-marketplace.blogspot.com/2007/04/critical-care.html

Looks like both sites have Apple Banana Flavor, as well as regular :o)

Grace is doing much better! She was feeling good enough on Saturday to make a huge ruckus all night It took about 3 days of the critical care before he tummy really started moving again, but one day all of sudden we had BIG POOPs galore! I think the banana blended in the critical care really helped because it made her swallow the critical care as opposed to squooging it out of her mouth back onto her lips and then *shaking* her head so the critical care splattered the walls. We had to have a drop cloth to feed her on!
