I was thinking of switching to an every day litter changing routine.  Right now it’s just too much poop/pee in Drue’s and so I think every day would be better.  Tucker’s isn’t as bad since she’s smaller but still..I think it’d be more sanitary for their hay if I changed it once a day.  They’ve both been pretty awesome about the litter boxes since I started putting their hay ONLY in the litter box and so I’d like to keep that up but then I feel like they’re going to end up munching on gross hay.

But..I can’t afford an endless supply of litter LOL so…for those of you that change your litter daily…what do you use, how much do you use..etc.

Right now we’ve been using the feline pine pellets.  I do not have access to wood stove pellets, I’ve called around..that idea is out

I don’t think newspaper would work for us unless there’s a way that would preven them from digging it out of the box.  Or atleast less apt to do so.

I put a layer of newspaper down & then litter down. I only put a bit of litter down (I used the recycled newspaper stuff) in the back where they pee. The newspaper makes the cleaning a lot easier

I change my rabbits litterbox daily. I can’t stand the thought of them sitting in their litterboxes with a lot of pee and poop. My bunnies practically live in their litterbox (don’t know why, they have a HUGE living space). As soon as they finish their dinner, it’s right back in the box munching hay. I just began using aspen shavings which seem to work pretty good as far as odor. I use to use citter country which are the wood stove pellets. They are not diggers, so it stays in their boxes. I have a large scooper and put one scoop in each box. My bonded lops get 2 scoops since their box is much bigger. I have 4 rabbits plus a foster, so I go through a lot of hay and litter, so I buy the large quantity size. It lasts me about a month. See if you can find critter country. They sell it as PetCo. Don’t know if you have one in your area. Good luck!

Ok I’m going to try that tonight and see how it goes.  If we have any newspaper around….

I think I have a tendency to overuse litter and put way too much in.  Maybe I’m just so used to cat boxes where it has to be loads of it.

I put maybe 2 cups of paper litter in the back of the box. Sometimes, I layer a bit more on after it is used then clean all out at end of the day.

I have 2 bunnies that I am starting the bonding process with- so I have 1 litter box with a grate cover (modified cage) and another regular cat litter box.  In the cat litter box I put down a layer of newspaper and 2 cups of woodstove pellets and then some handfuls of hay.  I dump the regular litterbox every other day- the newpaper makes it easier to dump as it peels away and there is no used litter stuck to the box.

Have you been able to find wood stove pellets?  They are seasonal- but this is the time of the year where you would be able to find them (at least here in the US).  I am super impressed with the odor control (I only clean the litterbox with grate once a week) and you can’t beat the cost…less than $6 for 40lbs (which is about the size of a large bag of dog food).

I would try lining the box with either newspaper or depending on the size of the box- you could try regular printer paper if that will stop them from being able to dig it up (it should lay flatter than newspaper).  There are a lot of vet clinics, humane societies and boarding facilities that use the “paper in the bottom of the box” trick- it prevents wet litter from sticking to the litterbox which makes dumping much easier and is more sanitary and controls odor better for the pet.  This of course does not work well for cat litterboxes with scoopable litter.  But for small litterpans that are changed frequently- it helps alot.  In fact I don’t even rinse the box after dumping I am able to refill and allow the minimal scent to stay to help with aquainting my bunnies.

I change litter boxes every day because I just use the corner litter boxes and by the end of the day they are pretty full. I use yesterday’s news. I put just enough litter in to absorb the pee. Like 3/4 cup maybe. I find Yesterday’s News keeps the smell down.

a question KatnipCrzy… yours don’t dig out the newspaper? i tried the newspaper thing once and within 2 minutes of putting the box down, Mead had found the paper and was pulling it up/chewing on it… i ended up having to pull it out a couple minutes later b/c she was starting to get litter everywhere! how do you do that, do you cut it smaller than the box… or what? i’d love to use that trick but so far it’s not worked for me. am i doing something wrong?

My buns don’t dig in the box at all.  Once the litter and hay is in there they are more interested in the hay.

I scoop my litter out every day & then add a bit more. Once a week I dump everything and clean out the box with vinegar & water.

Luckily, most of the time my little critters pee in the corner of the litter box – so it is really easy to scoop out the “wet” litter every day and then scoop out most of the poop.

So  far it’s going well   There’s been a little digging/shredding of the newspaper but not too much.  I’ve been using newspaper then the pine pellets in the one side and then hay on the other side.  I also find that we’re not wasting as much hay this way either.  Usually now I can take the hay that they haven’t eaten and is still in it’s pile and is easy to pick out and put back in the fresh box.  And since it’s obvious with the newspaper what has been peed on and what hasn’t I’m not as worried that they’re eating dirty hay.

This probably won’t work for everyone, but for me i have it down to a science! My DH is allergic so i have to change the litterbox daily, as well as vacuum out the cage and run and the room the cage and run are in. So far, he’s doing okay. i also happen to be mildly allergic to the hay. i’m using orchard grass now because i’m more than a little allergic to timothy.

i have 2 litterboxes, the medium cat litter boxes. It would be nice to be able to use a smaller one as it would certainly save some litter, but Checkers stopped using them. i take the litter box not in use off the shelf in the garage and use about 2 cups of Sunseed recycled newspaper product (i find it more absorbent and softer than YN), then i top it with about a cup of a mixture of the Soft-Sorbent plain and the Soft-Sorbent with lavendar buds added. That small amount of scent keeps it smelling nice without being overpowering for Checkers, and i think it actually helps the dog whose crate is in the room stay calm. i mix the litters together, and that amount just covers the bottom of the pan. Checkers doesn’t like it when i use litter just in one part of the pan. Then i top it with hay in one side. If i fill it too full, she will dig and throw litter and poo out of the box, but if i don’t use enough litter, it’s harder to clean. i used to put some newspaper in the bottom (the pages from free newspapers are just the right size), but she started pulling the paper out of the box, which caused a holy mess of litter and poo! Then i let the whole thing rest for about an hour so there isn’t as much hay dust flying around.

After an hour, i take a clean trash bag (kitchen size) and put it over the clean litter box and carry it up to Checkers along with her salad. i take the clean litter box out of the bag and put the dirty box in the bag and close it as much as possible. Then i go about vacuuming, and put the clean box in her run and let her out to play. Then i take the dirty litter box outside and just dump it into the bag, so that there’s less allergens flying around in the house. After i throw the poo/litter mix out in the big can outside, i clean the litter box with vinegar and water and put it back on its shelf in the garage. By having 2 litter boxes, i save time and i think i cut down on allergens, too.

That may not be that helpful to you, though. Hope it helps a little anyway.

o0o yeah, Fredalina, I lovvvvee softsorbent! I sprinkle that in the litterbox, and the smell is quite nice.

I usually try to keep myself down to just changing the litterboxes every other day, and on the inbetween days just dumping out the wet parts and adding a little more litter. I’d say I use about a cup of YN, about 1/4 cup of softsorbant.

I am definitely going to try and stock up on some wood stove pellets this winter! Where do you normally get them, a hardware store?

thank you for sharing that Fredalina!!!!! that is a great system that you’ve got and i can see that being very useful for folks with allergies! i think it’s a good idea to have an extra box and swap them out. that can allow you to thoroughly clean and disinfect the box after each use, without making the bunny wait too long without a potty.

bunnyballet- call around first for wood stove pellets. i’d try home improvement stores (Depot, Lowes), tractor supply stores if you have them. anywhere where they might sell horse supplies/bedding (it’s basically the same thing). if you get the stove pellets, you need to make sure they are without accelerant. i suppose if you knew of any stables in your area you could contact them and maybe ask where they get their horse supplies locally…

Beka, I was just going to mention the same thing – wood stove pellets are exactly the same as horse bedding. When WSP are out of season, we go to a farm store any buy horse bedding – pretty much the same price too.

Another thing to try to use less litter is this – buy one of those sifting cat litter boxes. Line the bottom with newspaper and some litter, just enough so that you can place one of the sifting trays on top. Then when the bunny hops in to pee, it will drip thorugh to the litter, but when they poop, it says on top of the grid. So all you have to do is dump out the poop on top, lift the grid and scoop out the pee spots.
