I was getting a friend for Hammer from a rescue but they dont have any girls right now. They are a small rescue run out of a few members homes. Anyways i was distraught over having to wait.. and so was Hammer but we dealt with it. Well for some reason i decided it would be a good idea to look at craigslist! well one thing lead to another and i found myself looking through the rabbit ads, I swear i didnt do it on purpose lol. Well i found this.
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/grd/870419791.html
I want one! I could take Hammer with me still im sure to pick one out. They are pretty close to me. But am i being unresonable? Do you guys think they would find good homes anyway? I really want your opinions since i trust you guys so much. Do you think its okay to go ahead and skip the shealter? At least the buns in the shealter are in good hands… right? lol help!
I couldn’t see the cl ad. Well.. anybunny should get a good home. Has Hammer been missing a friend?
You have to copy and paste the site. Im not sure how to make it an actual link. But Hammer has be very friendly with my cats but they dont really like him much anymore. If one of the cats decides to jump the gate and visit, Hammer follows the cat EVERYWHERE for as long as the cat will put up with it and not leave. Hammer looks so desperate for them to like and play with him.. its so sad. So im 100% positive he really wants a friend
they are very cute. i don’t think you’re being unreasonable in wanting one. any bunny slave would want to take one (or two!) of those cute little babies home. that’s the tough thing about CL, there are always going to be bunnies that are adorable and needing homes. she might be breeding (which i personally HATE to support) but it’s your decision what you do.
a few things:
keep in mind that they will *probably* need to be housed and exercised separately for about 4 or 5 months (if you get a girl) or for 2 months if you get a boy. she would need to be spayed (which will cost more than what you paid for Hammer’s neuter).
if you adopted a spayed female from a rescue you would be able to start bonding immediately and wouldn’t have to deal with the messy, hormonal baby stage again. also, by adopting from the rescue that would open a spot up in their home for another rabbit who might be in immediate risk of euthanasia.
you will be able to offer any rabbit you get a great life, but you also need to be aware of your time, space (and possibly monetary) limitations.
also, as far as the rescue, i would not rule out adopting a boy. that can be a good match too.
Beka, Ive thought it all out and have been throwing it around for a day now. The cost doesnt really concern me, not that im at all rich but i know i can and will provide. Im not looking forward to the spay (if i do this) but i guess its been done before lol. I did think about the time it would waste for bonding, but i had decided the bunny would be mine for a month to get her used to the surrounding and me, but good point about the taking 6 months before they could be bonded. Im perpared to house them apart of course in view of each other. You dont think i could bond before the spay do you? The few weeks after might set them back? And can boys really bond? Id heard of it but i always read and heard of different sex pairs. Would that be a harder bond? or a weaker relationship?
i would like to know that as well. is a male to male bond harder to do or a weaker bond? theres a beautiful harlequin at a shelter i have been looking at but hes male and so is pepper.
they might be able to bond before the spay, but you’d have to be prepared for possible fighting in the future once the hormones set in. there is always going to be uncertainty when getting a new bunny tho, but whatever you decide to do, i know you’ll give a great home to whichever bunny you get.
altered boys can be bonded. i think two boys is sometimes easier than two girls actually, but of course it all depends on the individual bunny’s personality. if Hammer is very laid-back, he should be able to bond to whomever you pick with some time.
PeppersMama, i would have Pepper meet the harlequin to see if the match might work. that’s the only way to get a good idea of what he might accept…
OMG minirex/angoras!! UGH how hard is it to turn down a baby bunny…
I want one too OK?
Ok, I’m a bad influence seriuosly.
It’s up to you, if you do get the baby be prepared that you may have to house them seperately and wait for bonding but sounds like you’ve already thought that through! You’ll have to let us know what you decide to do! On the flipside you can do male-male bonding ![]()
I have to pipe in here and say, as adorable as these bunnies are, they ARE babies and those usually get snapped up pretty quick. It is the older, less ‘cute’ adult bunnies who have less chance of being adopted, and more chance of being euthanized.
I can’t believe this person is holding them all in their arms like that…good grief, what it they fall? >
Also, an older, altered bunny is going to be much more hormonally grounded that an infant. And will hopefully make for easier bonding. There is less chance of rejection with the altered adult than there will be with the babies who are still intact and have to go through the whole process. You know what that’s like.
But of course, it is your decision. I hope you can find Hammer a mate, I know what it’s like to watch a bunny try in vain to bond with a cat. Fiver does this all the time with my two cats and the sad result is, they just don’t like bunnies. ![]()
I would ask them this- if they sell all of these baby bunnies- are they going to breed more?
I totally fell for the cute baby bunny thing- that is how I got started into house rabbit life- and that is how a lot of us get started. But most of those bunnies that she is holding will end up in a hutch outside, surrendered to a shelter or set free at some time in their life. I would have to say it would be better than average odds to predict that ONE of those bunnies will live an indoor speutered, pampered life.
I would ask them this- if they sell all of these baby bunnies- are they going to breed more?
this is something else i thought of… in the pic it looked like there were maybe 5 buns, but is she only selling 3? have 2 already sold or is she keeping 2 and then the whole breeding cycle is going to start all over again? let’s say she sold all 5 for 30 bucks each (computes) that’s 150 bucks. now if that money was going towards *neutering the father* at the very least, then great, but if not, she’s got a nice little business going on for herself.
did you catch this line: “Yes they are crossbreeds. They are Angora/Mini Rex but WILL NOT get the long hair!”
how does she know they will not get long hair? it sounds like she might have bred the parents before. how else would she know for a FACT what the adult bunny would look like. with a cross, there is no guarantee…
I agree – I would wait until the rescue gets in a male rabbit that needs rescued – there are always rabbits out there that do need rescuing.
I agree that it does seem appealing to get a baby, but they will get snatched up pretty quickly.
I say take your time since it’s not urgent to find Hammar a friend right away.
Our two neutered males are bonding pretty easily. We did have one slight setback, but I think that’s just because we tried to put them in a permanent space together too quickly. They really do enjoy grooming each other and snuggling – I can’t wait until they can live in the same cage and do that whenever they want.
It does sound like the seller is a breeder. Keep in mind that if you adopt an adult bun from a shelter, you can pick the bunny based on personality. Or, even better, you can let Hammer pick by seeing how he reacts to the other bunnies ![]()
Ok. Final decision…. *drum rool please!*…. RESCUE! Good point Mimz about the babies having a better chance at getting a home. Although i may not be a good home.. but you never know. And excellent point Beka about how do they KNOW they wont have the angora hair. That really convinced me. Ive decided to go to the Indiana chapter of the hrs since the rescue here only has one male.. and doesnt know when they will get more. The one in Indiana is quit a ways away but o well.. I’ll just be sure to get rescue remedy for the car ride for Hammer. He didnt do so well on his last outing lol.
So glad you decided this BunnyLiz! Remember, by homing a rescue, you effectively save 2 bunnies. About the male to male bonding, I immediately thought of Digby and Yoshi. They chose each other from memory. You have more chance of success this way. Getting the baby and keeping them separate would be too much for me!!! Plus there’s the chance they might not bond anyway – I think this can sometimes happen (?).
So, you can tell which way I was hoping you’d go right? lol
I think that’s a great decision, too!
I know they’re all cute, but taking your time to make sure you are doing what is best for you and Hammer will probably ultimately make you happier than an impulse decision…
Well there are 6 maybe 7 girls that will be meeting Hammer next weekend or the weekend after! We are so excited!… and I just cant hide it! lol
*hugs*
i’m so excited that Hammer gets to go dating… take your time, read his signs. try him with all the girls and see what kind of reactions you get…
he he! Bunny Speed Dating!
lol Beka, we are TOO excited! Im already drawing up plans for how im going to do this and that and everything way before i need to worry about it. My mom thinks i need to spend more time with my actual human friends lol. But what does she know lol
Jersey, i thought the exact same thing when i got the email with all the eligible singles waiting to met Hammer. I said its like speed dating! One right after the other and only about a two min. date lol
This thread makes me feel winsome. I keep thinking Fiver should have a mate, but I’m not eager to bring a fourth bun into the house…and I doubt my hubby would appreciate it either.
So I shall have to live the experience through you and Hammer, Liz. ^_^ I hope (but kind of doubt) you’ll have the chance to take pix but I expect a full report one way or t’other! ![]()
Lol Mimz i do actually plan on taking pics from the bonding. Im positive my mom will want to sit in on the process the first few session since she is so doubtful ill be able to do it at all! Ill hand her the camera! Thats all she could really do anyway, she is scared of Hammers rabbitude and teeth lol. After the first few times im hoping ill feel confident to stand off some and take pictures on my own. I really want to take pics so you guys will be able to help me out more. Im thinking that if you see (rather then hear) whats happening, the set up, the body lingo etc. you will have more suggestions and helpful feedback. Of course ive never done this so i may be over estimating myself lol, but i hope not! : )
That sounds great! ^_^ I’m looking forward to it!
I just realized, by purchasing my FLIP video camera, that I have the perfect item for taking symptoms in my bunnies to my vet. You know how they’re always having something wrong with them, yet when you get to your appointment suddenly all the symptoms disappear? (At least with my bunnies they do.) I found that by taking videos of the rabbits, then bringing my camera-which has a decent playback screen-with me to the vet, I can just SHOW her what is going on instead of having to explain it, which I know I’m not so good at.
I know this probably isn’t what you had in mind, but thought it might be helpful to mention. I do think even still pictures will give us a much better idea of how Hammer is reacting to his ‘ladies in waiting.’ ^_^
I have actually taken pictures for the vet lol. I do when the dogs have something im watching. Like a few weeks ago, i noticed Molly (puppy) had a bald scabby sore on her elbow. I toke pictures just in case and then just put neosporin on it for a few days. It cleared up on its own but the pictures would have been really handy if i wasnt so lucky. That way the vet could have seen what it was and what it progressed to be.
I just want to let you know that Warren County Humane Society has 2 male rabbits at the moment. A brown one and a black french lop. I was just there the other day.
Sounds like this would be alot closer for you. And they really need rescuing.
