Hiya everyone, i thought i had a breakthrough with kingston last week when i got him out of the cage and laid on the sofa with him.

He laid in my lap for over an  hour while i watched heros and he was all relaxed and doing that teeth purr thing.

I just kept stroking him and he was loving it, that is until………

He climbed up to my shoulder and pee’d on me!

I put him straight back in his cage and just put his mistake down to being away from his litter tray for so long.  But 3 days ago he did the same again, but after only 10 mins! once again i put his straight back into his cage (see the pattern emerging!)

Last night i decided to put him on my knee again, he had been in a foul mood all day (Growling whenever i put food in his cage) so i though some grooming might cheer him up.  He laid in my lap and got comfortable while stroked his head but after 3 minutes he pee’d again! Ruining my tshirt and my trousers!

Why is he doing this? and i really getting on his nerves or is it some sort of medical problem?

        Thanks for the help

Oh no, sounds like you had a lot of laundry. My dutch boy has done that to me too. He’s very shy and we were having a really nice snuggle on the couch with him under my chin and purring and whoosh! Hopefully it’s marking and not revenge.

Is he neutered that should help.    Awe somebunny loves you as his own.   How sweet….  Sometimes Cotton will do that when I smelled like the new bunnies Ruby and Honey Bunny.   Once he got used to their odor on me he stopped.

One nite he got me 3 x   After changing my shirt twice I just put a towel on me and he quit.  It gets really annoying I know.

he might not want to be up on the couch with you. it seems like it worked the first time, he peed, he got to go down, so maybe he is going to do it everytime he wants down? it could be marking the area (this is more likely if he’s not neutered yet). will he let you interact with him on the floor? or is it a similar situation?

He isnt neutered yet so hopefully when he is that will help.
Beka – when hes on the floor he justs runs about as he wishes and if i try to stroke him he just runs away. If i lay on the floor he will come up to me and sniff but thats all really. Is this normal bunny behavior? He turns 3 months on Nov 1st

that sounds perfectly normal for such a young bunny. he is still learning his environment, he has a TON of ENERGY. have him in a smaller area (one room maximum) sit on the floor, ignore him and if he comes up to you offer him a healthy treat. do this for awhile before trying to pet. that’ll get him used to you and he will see you’re not a threat without feeling “trapped”.

Hmm, Patricia are there any other animals in the house and/or are you giving more attention to something else? A lot of times bunnies will pee on you to claim you as theirs and it often happens out of jealousy, however since your guy is not neutered I would definately say it’s the hormonal need to mark territory. Is there a way like Beka suggested to be on the floor with him instead of holding him in your lap and tempting him to mark you until you get him fixed?

From your post I am understanding that you are reaching into his cage to take him out and hold him and sort of forcing him to spend time with you. This isn’t always a bad thing, however this would make a rabbit growl or attack you as it is their way of voicing that they don’t like what you are doing and you are invading “their” space (a defending territory thing). Can I suggest that you try something different and spend some quality time on the floor with him instead of physically taking him out of the cage? I am thinking that this will help him stop being so defensive with you when you reach into his cage and it also gives him the choice to come up to you and build up some trust. This may also help with the peeing on you as well. Let me know if you try it and how it works out for you. If it isn’t going so well, let us know and we can help!

Ive started sitting on the floor with him when i let him out now, he comes up to me for a sniff but then just runs away when i reach to touch him.
Ive been pretending to be asleep on the floor too, i close my eyes and then i feel something warm close to my face, when i open my eyes its kingston having a good sniff!
Last time i let him out he peed on the floor even though i had a litter tray outside of the cage, but to be honest ive only just started using two litter trays so il have to give him time.

Is it normal for rabbits to forget everything once they are out of the cage? It seems like he is far to busy sniffing stuff and binkying like mad to bother with weeing in the right place! haha

if he is forgetting everything once out of the cage, that means he’s being let out of the cage either too soon (his inside cage habits are not solid yet) or he is being given too much space. can you section off a small area by his cage where he can come and go (no bigger than a few feet?) and slowly expand this as his habits improve? maybe get a piece of scrap linoleum to protect your floor just in case.

It sounds like you are on the right track Patiricia. Bunnies can’t resist a human that ignores them and you can also try reading a newspaper or old magazine too. The reason I say old magazine is because bunnies will want to come up and chew on what it is your reading.

Beka has a great point, your guy could be marking the space willy nilly with pee and poo because he has too much space to run in because of his ego. If you set boundaries like a smaller run space with a litterbox until his habits are perfect, then slowly expand the space the space he gets to run about in. This way you reinforce yourself as the “top bunny” and can avoid other mishaps later on. You may need to do this once in a while because bunnies like to re-visit becoming top bunny over you and are not always happy being number two.

It does sound like you’re doing well!!

I confess, sometimes if I need a quick nap, I’ll grab a pillow and some floor near the buns so they’ll come hang out with me while I catch a few minutes of sleep LOL

Rabbits love to explore and practice ‘routes’ so for the first few months (And again after any furniture rearranging) they’ll spend alot of time running around and going under, over through things Once they know the ‘lay of the land’ quite well you’ll probably have to make them stop lounging around all the time!

Little Kit pees constantly. I try not to let it discourage me from holding him, and make sure I have plenty of spot shot carpet cleaner handy.

Ive ordered a pen from ebay so i can start limiting his area but im a little worried, will it be unfair to limit his area now after he has previously had full access to the living room?
Hes quite stubborn and last nite he was trying to get his cage door open! Hes only just turned 3months so he didnt have the strength to do it but i know he will try and try untill he succeeds!

no it’s not unfair… it’s important that you get this situation sorted out now… put some toys and fun boxes and stuff in the pen.

Patricia, I agree with Beka, it is not unfair. If you don’t set boundaries or limitations, a bunny ego will pee, poo and destroy everything in its path. It is best to get this behavior issue sorted out now and establish yourself as “top bun.” Otherwise the longer you wait the more difficult it is to alter this behavior and the more headaches it will cause you to clean up and the additional stress from trying to get him to stop.
