Hello All! I hope you all are doing well! So i am going to my father in Laws farm for Christmas and I dont know what to do with Bunny My regular pet sitter who has experience with bunnies cannot pet sit and I will probably leave the dogs at Petsmart’s Pet Hotel since they had a blast there last Christmas.

Ive contacted the local rescues but they cant watch Bunny because she is not spayed yet I want to get it done but right now theres no extra $$ for that, its either get her spayed or pay for care while I am gone. Does anyone have any advice for me? I am in North Hollywood, CA

My husband wants us to take her, but i think the plane ride will be tooo traumatic for her.

        Please advise.

do you have a friend or family member nearby who could come to check on her everyday? this is not ideal, but it’s better than nothing.

you *could* take her with you, but not many airlines will allow rabbits, and when they do, they want them to be in the cargo area which is a BIG no-no for them.

i’ve never boarded a bunny at a rescue, do they all require that they be spayed/neutered? what about if they’re too young (isn’t your bun only 4 months or so?) i’m assuming she’d be caged separately so i’m unsure why that is necessary…

I have no family in California

If I could get her to go on the plane with me do you all think this would be a bad idea? If i could find a way to get her in a small carrier and go under my plane seat? It is a 5 and half hour flight I do not want her to get scared to death on the plane. TigerLily just turned 5months old.

it’s safe for her to ride in a small carrier as “carry on luggage” but you would need to find an airline that will allow this. we had someone who did this awhile back (i will see if i can find the thread) and she needed to actually get documentation from her doctor that her bun was a “therapy animal”. that was the only way it was allowed to be in the cabin with her.

A few months  ago we were thinking of going somewhere so I contacted I think it was  Cheapflights.com   I told them I am bringing my buns.  Finally after calling around he found Delta would allow the buns in the passenger section as long as they were in a leak proof pet carrier.  It costs 50.00 extra.

Hopefully you can get the same for you bun.

By the way we changed our minds and did not go.

First-if you take her with you, you CAN bring them on the plane (depending on the airline) for an extra fee. You can take her with you as your carry on so she sits with you. That might work, if your flights already booked phone them to ask. If its’ not you can ask at the time of booking.

Howver I’m wondering, we have a lot of BB members in California (I know it’s a state not a city) but is ANYONE in North Hollywood and want to petsit for bunnyfoofoo?

Maybe you could pet sit for them and they for you!!! It’s a while before Christmas, kudos for figuring out what to do now!!

Call your bunny vet and see if there is a rabbit experienced staff member that will petsit your bunny at their home- take her home- cage, food, to their house. It is worth a shot to see if they recommend someone for a reasonable price.  It would be pretty easy money to the pet sitter- bunnies are not that hard to take care of- especially in a boarding situation.

i like the idea of a professional pet-sitter or someone at the vet’s office most of all. i really do think (while it’s possible) that an airplane ride should be kept as a last resort (like if you’re moving or going away for a long time). what about a neighborhood teenager, is there one you would trust?

Ask your regular pet sitter if she has some other recommendations for pet sitters to help you.

Yeah i really dont want to have to take her on the plane I am so afraid she will be scared and something terrible will happen.

I would love to help anyone out who is near me, I am volunteering next week with a local rescue and hoping i will meet some nice people there. But if anyone who reads this can pet sit I would be more than happy to return the favor. My pet sitter is my neighbor and we have another neighbor I am leaving TigerLily with next week while I attend my cousins wedding but they are leaving for Christmas too, in fact our floor will be quite empty as most of the residents here are actors or producers who come from other places. last Christmas my husband and I were the only ones on our floor who stayed for the holidays.

But yes anyone who would liek to help or if i can help please email me.

Thank you all for your advice I really appreciate it

I would think the flight would be quite stressful for your buns. The change in air pressure and ears popping would be a main concern.  I am sure things will work out and  you will find someone. That would probably be best.

I was in the same predicament and I called the local chapter of the House Rabbit Society and asked if they had a list of bunny sitters.  They had one person they could recommend who turned out to be fabulous.  I take Edson to her house and it’s just great because he gets so much attention there.  I was afraid to have someone come to my house because honestly they would need to come in at least twice a day and I thought that is asking too much.  Definitely call them.  Good luck.

                                They have boarding! http://www.bunnyluv.org/services_new.htm

I just read that your bun is not spayed.  I think that is a definite priority no matter what. There are probably low cost neuter/spay places around you.  Many humane society’s do this.  How much is the spay?

Yes I know how important it is to get her spayed because of the cancer and I dont want her life cut short that is my biggest fear. We found one place who will do it for $187 were looking at other places because that is still a bit much

I heard there was a local clinic that did it for $150 which would be ideal but I have not called them yet.

As for our trip, we may end up staing here for Christmas because my husband may have to work now, so that may be best for all of us because I dont like leaving the animals behind

not to sidetrack… but since you mention it, when looking at prices, be sure to get a list of what is included in the cost at every place you call… not all places will give pain meds, but i feel this is an important thing, esp for a spay b/c it is invasive. just something to be aware of.

I know how you feel… Before we left for Europe, I was FRANTIC! I always am, every single time I have to leave them behind.

I am in San Diego or else, we would help out. UNLESS… if you are still going… you want to bring her down here. She would have to stay in a large cage but at least she would be cared for by us in the house, of course. Just let me know… if things change, that could possibly be an option, too.
I would not take her in the airplane. If you were moving, that would be a different story. I’ve heard very good things about DELTA airlines. Since it would be a temporary thing… I would not recommend it.
