So I spent a lot of money on a cage for Kit when I first got him, thinking a grated floor would be a great idea for a baby bunny with no sense of litter training. And it would be if Kit didn’t constantly PEE OUTSIDE OF THE CAGE!! 3 times a day I walk in my kitchen to a HUGEEEE and I mean enormous puddle of pee… its exhausting to have to mop the floor 3 times a day or more. And today, I slid the tray out to soak up the pee that got underneath and it was like the second I slid the tray out he peed right on my hand. I mean he peed a FLOOD!!! Not to be gross

I guess, I should know that his potty training will not get any better till hes neutered. And I do know that. I just don’t know what to do in the meantime because this certainly isn’t working. I have a litter box in his cage right now that takes up half of it– i went out and got a bigger one thinking it would help.

Any other ideas? I love my little boy but he sureeeee is wearing me thin with this issue! And what is worse is that I try and play and socialize with him and it always ends shortly with him peeing on me, our brand new carpet, or worse, something he’s climbed up on that isn’t his.

I just don’t know what to do.

I’m sorry for not remembering the details exactly, but does Kit have a litterbox in his cage with the grated floor? It sounds to me like he is holding his pee and going outside the cage, which seems to me that he doesn’t want to dirty his cage? It sounds like quite a bit of pee for just a territorial marking. What do you clean up the pee with? Its good to use some white vinegar to make sure you get all of the pee scent up.

Is he lifting up his bum and shooting the pee outside of the cage? Is it getting on the wall at all? If he is just peeing in the corners and it is getting outside the cage, that is pretty normal, even my neutered bun does that from time to time, and I think the best solution for that is some type of pee guard. You can get a corner litterbox, or you can get some kind of plastic or cardboard and and can direct the pee down into the tray as opposed to out of the cage. If he is spraying, I would recommend trying clothespinning a sheet around the cage, that is what I did for the one un-neutered boy that I took care of, and he only sprayed once, and the sheet caught it instead of my wall!

There’s not really a way to make a pee guard that would direct it into the cage. I was thinking about tryng to find a plastic container that I could somehow cut the sides down and set the cage in, but the cage is so big– I just wish I would have rethought this cage and I will probably end up getting a new one.

Kit has one litterbox that takes up a corner–and then some, of his cage. I debated on getting a full cat sized litterbox but the way the cage is designed you can only open it from a small cage door and the litterbox won’t fit through it. I even positioned his waterbowl in the corner where he pees the most, and he still managed to pee there somehow. He will now pee in the two back corners of his cage, and usually first thing in the moring theres a puddle on both sides.

I clean up his pee with vinegar, and then once a week I bleach the floor, and he stays in the bathroom until it airs out. Its not a great combination of smells in my kitchen after a while.

Funds are limited, so I guess I am going to have to wait on a bigger cage, and just become queen of the mop for a while.

Bunnyballet, do you have a picture of the cage or one to show us of it on the internet? I was going to suggest affixing plexi glass panels on the inside of the cage by drilling a hole or using a hot ice pick to poke a hole trough and zip-ties but it sound like that won’t work and being able to see the cage would really help me come up with some solutions for you.

As for the floor, get a remenant piece of linoleum or even an old plastic shower curtain or table cloth to put underneath the cage and lay an old sheet to sop up the mess that you can scoop up and toss in the washer and use a mop on the lino or plastic.

What I did with my cage is I went to Home Depot and purchased some thick plastic that they sell on a roll in the flooring section. It is a clear plastic that I think is designed to make to be put on the floor to create a path for people to walk on and not walk on your carpet. I used a knife to cut six small slits, one in each corner, and then one in the middle on the top and bottom side. I then zip tied this to the inside of the cage by zip tying the middle slits to into the corner, and then using the four slits in the cornets to secure the plastic to the sides of the cage. Does this make sense? It is pretty easy to do even with a small door because you can fold the plastic to get it inside the cage.

I don’t know what it is with bunnies and peeing in corners Mine do it too! I’ll let you know if I can come up with anymore tricks.

Mine do that from time to time too.  It is frustrating. I got  a new cage with a plastic bottom… However when they pee in it it is just as aggravating and as hard to clean up.  I have to get a paper towel and sop and sop up some more then wipe it dry.  Also removing some wet hay that fell in there.

Mine is neutered too and he does that on occassion…. I found it is because I sometimes put my hand in there when he is in there.  So when I get up in the morning sometimes he has peed in it.  HE would pee outside the cage when I had the big rectangular wire bottomed one.

I started putting a towel to cover up his cage. It would go all the way down to the floor.  That helped keep the pee off the floor when he was in the wire cage.  I would get up and see pee spots on the towel instead of my floor.  Then he would sometimes pee on his paper in a corner too. That wasn’t such a big deal tho.

I believe I know what cage you are talking about does it have a red pan to put the paper in and for the stuff to fall thru. Yeah those doors are not quite big enuf sometimes.  It is a good cage tho very roomy.

For what I remember as being a small bunny, he must have a wooden leg that he’s keeping all that water in! >_<

When you find pees spots on the floor, I would suggest mopping them with paper towel, and then placing that towel in the litterbox for him, so he understands when he smells it that THIS is where the offending liquid belongs, NOT on the floor.

And I’d pick up some Nature’s Miracle if you can afford it. It helps to eliminate animal territorial marking odors and may be an nicer alternative to the bleach on the floor for both you and Kit.

And btw, how is your Hunny Bunny? ^_^

Oh Mr. Honey Bunny.  He would drink lots and pee lots when we first got him.  The litterbox would be soaked. He has mellowed out on the drinking and I put more paper in his box.   HE does real well with litterbox.

However that Cotton he peed on the floor by the bedroom door again. GRRRR.  I have to get them bonded so this will stop hopefully.  It is frustrating.

Before Leo was neutered, I had major pee issues.  Frequently he would over shoot over the sides of the litterbox.  I used puppy pee pads, taped to my walls and encasing the litterbox area.  The pee pads tended to catch most of the shots.  Are you using the standard corner bunny litterboxes?  I found that the higher wall part had to be adjusted depending on where his pee got shot.  So for a while, I had to rotate the boxes on a regular basis.  Honestly, for the time being you may want to put a few large litterboxes in his cage.  I’m assuming it’s a single level, so that’s why you can’t do all litterboxes on the first floor?

Once Leo got fixed, I didn’t get the pee problems any more.  Which confused me b/c his penis didn’t change location (i.e. the over-shooting).  The only probs I had was when I got a basket to use for their veggies.  He’d go in there an pee. I just don’t use that basket anymore.  Now he’s become more of a super poop machine!
