We just adopted our second bun, Yoshi, yesterday, and his nails seem pretty long. Also, the quick looks like it goes all the way to the end of the nails. How much can we safely trim off at a time? If we wait a while before trimming them, will the quick shrink back a bit?

I’ll be watching this thread too. One of mine, my Dutchboy Daisy, has fairly long white nails, but the pink quick is all the way to the very tip on all of them.

Don’t cut anywhere the quick is. It may be the way the nail is colored or the quick. I’d take him to the vet for the first trim so they can show you how to do it and tell you if the quick is all the way to the end.

When nails are left habitually long, the quick does grow. By taking small amounts off frequently the quick will go back to a shorter more normal length.

I second taking him to the vet then you can get them cut as short as possible and know what length to keep them at. My vet charges about $13.00 for a nail trim.

Sometimes after you trim the nail, the quick may recede a bit. I know it is a situation with cats. When they have very long nails, you trim them then go back in a week and trim them again because the quick has receded. But don’t ever cut it.

If you are experienced with nail trims and it indeed looks like the quick even though the nails are long- it probably is the quick.

As others mentioned trimming weekly will help the quick to recede- even if you are only able to “shave’ off a little bit with the trimmers.  One thing I recommend is looking at the END of the nail after trimming- if you see a fleshy dot it mean you are close to the quick- but this only works really after just trimming.  If the nail still looks “dry” and all nail you might be able to take off a bit more.  This technique works well on dogs too.  Cats not really.

This might be a good application for the peticure (as seen on TV pet nail trimmer).  If you are taking off a small amount frequently- that should encourage the quick to recede.

Yeah Edson’s quick really looks like it is at the end too.  There’s a black line that runs on the top all the way down so I am so paranoid to cut his nails, even if I could!  I tried once and it was a disaster.  I couldn’t see the dang quick and he squirmed.  I gave up! I take him every 4-6 weeks to the rescue for the trim.  They are so good at it and I’m soooo bad at it. Good luck.  It is not one bit fun!

A tip I’ve resorted to is shining a flashlight through the nail to find the quick and marking it with a permanent marker, then trimming. Otherwise juggling the flashlight, holding a bunny secure and a nail trimmer is a bit much for me. If you are worried about any ink left behind, use an emery board to file any remnants of it off.

I’m taking the two of them into the vet this morning for a checkup and nail trim. They did really well together in the carrier last time – hopefully they’ll be the same today since I’ll be the only human in the car

Just got back from the vet. They both did very well and have a clean bill of health. I got to watch the vet trim their nails, which I think will be helpful.

Bet you’re glad that’s over, beeca! How did the vet do it, by trancing them?

Actually, the vet tech held the bunnies from behind and lifted their chests up a bit, while the vet clipped the nails from the front. I might try to put them in a trance first when I do it, although the vet’s method seemed to work pretty well, so I’ll do that if the trance doesn’t work.

That’s very interesting how they held them. I’ve been feeling like a woosy because I can’t trance and cut the nails at the same time. My son will hold the bunny against his chest, with the bunny’s side flat against him kinda like the vet will hold a dog and I can cut the nails on both feet on that side.
