okay so I was doing an overall check up with Smudge tonight, you know the routine ears, nails all that fun stuff and I decided to check her teeth as well. I am afraid that her front incisors ( I hope this is right?) the two front teeth are overgrown. I looked at the picture on the the site and rabbit.org and from what I understand the top and bottom teeth should meet? But Smudge’s two bottom teeth aren’t even visible. It seems as if the top teeth have grown over top? I’m not sure how this happened.. I’ve always checked her teeth and they haven’t looked like this before. At least I’m sure something doesn’t look right but I don’t want to be freaking out over nothing, I have a tendancy to over react but I don’t think I am. She hasn’t been acting in pain, she has been a somewhat bratty this week but that’s really quite normal for her… we have off days sometimes. Also for those of you who may remember Smudge has been having sleepy eyes lately (only sometimes) and now I’m wondering if this is somehow related? The only difference I’ve noticed in her eating habits is that she isn’t eating as much hay but she is still eating quite a bit, also two days ago she had a small bout of poopy butt but it everything was bacj to normal by the next time she “went”. I don’t think I’ll be able to get a picture as shes not exactly easy to hold even in a burrito. I’ll try though. I’m going to call the vet tomorrow morning… I just feel terrible. How could I have missed this?! Is there anything I can do?!

P.S. what should I be asking the vet? I had a different vet but she is gone now. I knew I should have set up a new vet when the old one left but I put it off because she’s always been so healthy and fine. I’ve never dealt with teeth problems. I’m in Calgary, Alberta and I know of 2 rabbit savvy clinics here. One is the Avenida Small Pet Clinic and one is the Calgary Avian and Exoctic Clinic. I’m not sure which woul be better. The second one is mention on a few sites for vets in my area. Anyone around who knows them? Or just some things I should know related to vet tooth care?

ETA: pictures. The first one is kinda dark/blurry but it sort of shows how long the front teeth are. The second 2 are clearer but she was on her back and started trancing (something I’ve discovered she does EXTREMELY easily… even when I don’t exactly want her to) so her mouth was open a little. But you can see in the pictures if she closed her mouth the two top teeth would touch her bottom lip and if she is sitting up more and a just lift her lips up you can’t see the bottom teeth at all (I couldn’t get a picture with her in that position though). I’m hoping this is not as bad as I think but it doesn’t seem right to me. Thanks for all the help in advance! I hope she’ll be okay and the vet will know what to do

Sorry the last one is so big I’m working with a new camera and program and I’d rather just get them up then mess around, at least you can’t miss the teeth! I’m going to call the vet in the morning. I just wanted to see what you all thought. Smudge was not impressed by the proding but in the end it will be for the best, and she still took a raisin at the end of it all! She’s in good spirits and isn’t acting in pain but I’m still concerned I would hate for something serious to happen to my baby

That happened to one of my buns. We had to keep getting the teeth clipped/sawed down (I forget what it was. Terrible, I know. I even watched the vet do it the first few times. He even uses a human-grade dental tool, he says they’re sharper). But it got really costly, had to do it twice a month or so. Eventually, we just had the teeth pulled.

          =/

i would make an appt with a vet for a general check-up/1st visit since it’ll be a new vet and the vet will check the teeth in the process. i don’t think this is an emergency, so don’t feel you need the next appt. but do it as soon as you can. bring up the sleepy eye and the poopy butt.

another thing… looking at the second pic, it looks like there are bumps on the top incisors.  in human children, there are 3 mammelons (the little bumps) that help the permanent tooth erode away the root of the baby tooth.  that’s what causes it to fall out.  i have no idea about rabbit dental anatomy, but i am thinking (just based on what i know of dental health) that if they start out with the little bumps as wee lil bunnies, they would get ground down quickly thru normal use.  so it would seem like they’re not getting ground down at all.  you might have caught this just in time…

(and of course i might be wrong…)

They look okay to me – have you tried comparing them to your other rabbit’s teeth?

The teeth look fine to me too.  It’s only the back teeth that are supposed to meet – this helps them to grind down and not over grow.   This is a picture of a rabbit with overgrown front teeth – your bunny looks nothing like this…

I couldn’t find any actual photos but here are 2 articles with drawings that show how rabbit teeth should look.

Obviously it’s always good to check with the vet too if you are concerned since dental problems are well, a problem.

ack, that’s the way my poor Toby’s teeth looked the first day at the shelter. They had seized him from some people who couldn’t figure out why he was starving to death. Except one bottom tooth was poking through his poor lip. After their vet clipped his teeth and I went to pick him up a week later, I couldn’t believe it was the same bunny. All he needed was food!

Thanks everyone, I think I was just caught off guard by different look her mouth had and then of course I started google and starting seeing TONS of those poor bunnies like rabbitsma posted and of course the wheels started turning and I started freaking out.

I’m making an appointment just for an overall check up and will mention the teeth as well and I think I will get her nails done as she is really holding a grudge from last night and wont let me wrap her up at all hehe.

Sarita – Smudge is an only bun (for now) so when I wanted to know what normal teeth looked like I started looking for online pictures. The ones I found the teeth seemed to meet in the middle or just slightly overhang in the front but nothing like cover the bottom teeth entirely. However thanks for calming my nerves! It’s good to know that they look okay. I’m still going to a vet to put my mind at ease and just get to know a new vet in case.

I’m glad Smudge doesn’t have a tooth problem like that poor bun (or Toby I’m so sorry Kralspace that must have been terrible for him!) but I don’t want it to turn into something worse and her top teeth are definately pushing into her bottom lip slightly when shes in a normal position now that I’ve checked more calmly this morning.

Oh and thanks Beka! I wasn’t sure about the bumps on her teeth either. She has bumps on all 4 of the front teeth but I will definately ask the vet about this too!

Let us know what the vet says, Samantha.

I’ve talked to Dr. Effie about removing Toby’s teeth all together, but since it’s the upper and lowers both and he tolerates the monthly clipping so well, we’ve postponed any surgery for now. My local vet does the clipping and is very gentle about it and only charges $12. It’s always fun the first couple of nights when Tobys makes up for any munching he missed out on during the last few days before the clip.

Yeah, that poor bunny whose picture I posted was dumped at a vet clinic with another bunny. He was near death, starving because he couldn’t eat. Thankfully both bunnies have fully recovered and found a forever home together!

oh my God that poor bunny.  What stupid person to let it go that far. Well I am glad that bun is doing better. That person should be tortured

That terrible picture -WHO did that to that rabbit? *angry*

Krlspce:  I remember you brought up poor Toby before.

I agree w/ others that Smudge’s teeth look alright.  Leo has tooth problems, incisors and molars.  I would post a pic, but I’m technologically challenged.  Anyway…Leo’s top incisors:  one is wider than the other, they have a slightly odd angle (the turn in towards the throat more than they should).  He got his well care visit on Monday and the vet said his teeth look good.  They overlap about the same as Smudge.

Just one more thing.  I asked my vet about incisor removal and she said that the thing to remember w/ rabbits…their roots are very long compared to other species, so teeth removal for rabbits is comparable to humans having their wisdom teeth removed.  She said this is why vets prefer a trim or filing rather than straight up removal.  I thought that was interesting.  She said in her 18 yrs, she only does removal in very extreme cases…..like Toby or the bun in the pic.

Thanks everyone! I’m glad that her teeth seem to look okay. I called the vet to make an appointment anyways, I figured I might as well get her a check up now and maybe ask about the sleepy eyes and have a peek at the teeth while I’m there. Turns out they had an opening for tomorrow at 2:30, so I took it. It will put my heart at ease to have her checked out but I’m glad they don’t look too bad to anyone on here. The pictures aren’t exactly showing what I mean but I am feeling much better!

I will be interested to know too what the vet says. Though your bunnies teeth look okay, there can be bunnies who have straight teeth but just have a more severe overbite that can cause the teeth to grow longer than they should. It’s hard to tell for sure how much of an overbite is going on, but if the top teeth are long and not meeting, I would think the bottoms would grow longer too.

If the vet says that they are long, then I would also ask the vet to check for spurs on the molars.

                                          Keep us updated!

                                            Hi again everyone!

BB I was also wondering what might be going on with the back teeth because her front teeth are completely covering them. We have the vet appointment in 45 mins, so I have to leave here right away but I just wanted to give everyone another update but not a good one… I came home today from school and found a bunny COVERED in poop… She had BAD poopy butt. I tried to clean her off as much as I can, I don’t for the life of me know what caused this she ate her pellets this morning has hay and had normal poops when I left for school I’m just glad we’re going to the vet! Hopefully they can help figure out whats wrong. *Fingers Crossed* for a good appointment and some sort of idea on this poopy-butt episode…. cause cleaning a long-haired bunny bum is not fun, poor baby

WE’RE BAAAACK! Haha so I got to the vet’s office early and we ended up getting in right away! The vet seems like a wonderful lady, very knowledgable (hehe I was armed with questions to test that) and she is quick but gentle with Smudge.

As for Smudge’s diagnosis – Her teeth are okay, the vet said everyone’s (or buns) teeth are different so while Smudge’s might not look exactly the same as a picture or drawing hers are still in good shape. Everything else is good, she is getting to be a little plump! Not sure how that happened! But a change in pellets is in order I think, hers are okay but they’re not the healthiest so that is on my to-do list and will probably help bring her down from “plump”.

As for the diareha the vet said asked all about possible changes in diet, stress, home everything like that. When we couldn’t figure out what might have caused it she said she’d like to do a fecal sample just to be sure and if it came back clean then we would look more into a specific dietary plan to help. She checked Smudge’s tummy and found everything to be alright as well. So hopefully it was a one time bad poopy butt, but we’ll be doing the sample to be sure.

Going to the vet definately isn’t cheap but it’s worth it to know that everything is good! OH and as a last little tidbit the vet thinks that Smudge is part Angora.. I’ve never seen an angora up close so I’ve only ever known what their fur looks like from pictures but the vet said that she’s got some in her because her fur is longer than a Fuzzy Lop would be and has angora wool in it. Go figure well regardless of what she’s got in her she’s still my baby!

Thanks for everyones replies! I don’t know what I’d do without BB!!!!
