I usually use water crock, but I saw one of those tower watering system things – ya know, it’s sort of like a water cooler that keeps the dish at the bottom full.   Example – petmate cafe watering system.

Does anyone have these and does it work for you?

I’ve only had for a few days, but I noticed that Jack and Rucy weren’t drinking as much.   I made sure the water in the tower wasn’t getting stagnet, and I’d still poor out any hair, and hay that got into the dish part, but then when I went to clean it out today, the smell of plastic was still as strong as ever.  Can’t imagine that would make the water taste very good.    So I decided to switch back to the crock and the bunnies were drinking from it without hesitation.

If you have one, does it work for you?.

Maybe its because its something new? Does it make gurgling noises? You know, the water cooler glug, glug sounds. Maybe just leave both out, this as a back up.

Yea It might have a yucky taste because I find that all new plastic makes things taste bad (when I get new water bottles the water in them tastes bad for a while)

Try soaking it in vinegar. Is it dishwasher safe? If it is, then run it through once to get the vinegar out.

I’m still pretty fond of the old metal water dishes I got for Spockie. They came in 2 sizes, clamped to the cage bar (horizontal ones) so couldn’t be knocked off or have food dropped into it, cheap, easily cleaned, no drips. I tried to get them on line again, but the pet store, Erikson Grain Mill Inc. in Acton, MA, doesn’t have a website. I used to write to them or call to place an order and they’d ship it to me. Not sure everyone likes a metal water dish, though. Spockie loved it.

I soaked mine in warm soapy water and rinsed it several times then let it dry out. It took a bit but they got used to it and they love it. You need to clean it though. And attach it to a wall or something because they may think it’s a toy and you’ll end up with a wet and grumpy rabbit. (Radar at 5:30am…. soaking and thumping…it was really funny though)

I have one, it’s great because if you’re out for a day or so, then you know you have enough.

I’ve seen these but they look to easy to dislodge. Is that the case? Growing up, we used to have a ceramic water feeder for chickens. One big hefty piece or pottery. You filled it up and inverted it so the water flowed out into little pan area. Same sort of concept. Don’t know if you can still get this sort of thing.

Jersey prefers metal dish I have in another room for some reason. She kind of sips along the rim. (?)

                      Thanks everyone.

I put it through the dishwasher – still strong plastic smell, and not the same mild plastic smell that water bottles give off. This is unusually strong. I have decided to let it sit out and just see if the smell will fade in time. For now, bunnies have their crock.

I had something similiar for my cats- and they did not drink as much water if it was not changed and cleaned daily.  I had to try to keep it away from the food bowl otherwise I would get a kibble or 2 in the water and it makes a mess.  When the water level drops and you have an exchange or air and water thru the dispenser it can make a “glugging” noise- which did not seem to bother my cats.

To me it worked out better to use a bowl- easier to clean especially after my cats that eat like little piggies- crumbs everywhere.
