I am nursing the WORST headache right now. And I recognize it because I’ve had it before. It’s the same relentless headache I get when I’ve eaten something with lime juice in it. I have no idea why, I have never really had allergies to food until a number of years ago, I began to be unable to eat yeast raised breads, certain vegetables and some sugars and such. But the lime is one of the worst. It creates such pain in my head, I am going to have to go take a Tylenol and lie down for a bit. It is not a migraine, it is over the top of my head and down my neck. I’ve never felt anything like it, except perhaps for when I throw my back out.

Anyone else have allergies like this? And what do you do for symptomatic relief? I know I should avoid all products with lime in them, but some don’t list it in the ingredients and that’s when something like this happens.

        Ow…ow….ow….ow…….. >_<

I’m just allergic to life. I’m sensitive to a lot of food, but I wouldn’t quite say allergic. Diet sodas make give me uncontrollable tremors, though (I found this out one night at like 3 in the morning when I was the only one in my home – family was out of town and boyfriend was elsewhere. It was terrible). I think most of my allergy stuff is more of a reaction to airborne things. Terrible stuff. I basically just suffer through it.

I hope you feel better! I feel for you!

AWW I’m sorry to hear that Mimz-that sounds terrible!!

Digme-that’s crazy you get tremours from soda? Must be the aspertame or something?

The only thing I’m allergic to is perfumes (though I bought one you guys recommended in my other thread and smelled the opening today and didn’t die, so maybe it’s only most perfumes!!) and strong smells. Just gives me naseau with a strong headache and a tingle in the back of my throat. It will not go away in the presense of the smell, ie if some lady spritz’s me while I walk through a department store, and usually not until I’ve slept overnight.

My skin on the other hand is pretty sensitve, and if I’m really anxious or upset I’ll get a hive. At one point I broke out in feroscious hives everytime I ran (was on the track team) but I grew out of it I guess.

‘lergic to everything here. from animals (yes, boston), and her hay, all outdoorsey things, laundry detergent and fabric softener, certain shampoos, you name it and yes—food.

raw pork and chicken (handling it causes rashes, breathing it in, causes me to well, stop, breathing), and basically all fruit. some worse than others. makes my throat get tight and ears get itchy when i eat it. some are so bad (like watermelon) that i can’t even breath around it. some days and some fruits are worse than others and this allergy developed around middle school or so.

i can’t say i’ve ever got a headache from an allergy, although i’ve had some unexplained headaches recently and maybe allergies are why? hmm….

sorry you are suffering mimz, wish i could help more! but taking some tylenol and laying down is probably your best bet!

Wow, allenj, I can’t imagine being allergic to fruit! Have you always been? I’ve never really heard of fruit allergies until today… someone earlier told me that her room mates are allergic to guacamole because of the avocado. I still don’t believe avocados are fruit… they’re so weird!

K&K – I’m pretty sure it was the aspartame. I only had one can of diet coke with some snacks and the tremors happened a few hours later. I wouldn’t normally drink diet sodas anyway, or Coke in general, but it’s all my friend had in her new apartment. Crazy stuff. At least I know now and it happened during the night.

It’s quite common to have intolerance to fruits and veggies/ especially kids. It’s due to natural food chemicals Salicylates and Amines. They cause all sorts of reactions in people. It baffles some parents when they give kids a healthy diet with lots of fruit and veg and yet they have all these health problems.

An antidote some find useful to help with reactions to foods is a calcium carbonate tablet of 1/2 teaspoon bicarb soda in water. Calcium carb is in most chewable antacid tablets but beware of added colours of flavours in these as they can cause reactions too. Antidote for intolerances though, not true food allergies.
MM, lime is high in salicylates and amines but it might be the fructose you react to if sugars are a problem.
                  Hope you’re feeling better.

Wow, that is crazy! i hope you are feeling better. Must be a pain to have to deal with.

When I was working at the cooking school we would get students with all kinds of strange allergies: carrots, wheat – quite common, sugar.

My mom is allergic to avocados and lobster – which she will still eat on her birthday. They cause her palms to itch to the point she will scratch them raw – weird, hu?

aspartame is scary stuff any way.

I would put money on it being the aspartame, Rachel, both my kids are allergic to it, but it makes them throw up. I think I am too, but only because the taste of diet soda gives me the heaves.
OMG, you guys are WAY worse off than I, not being able to eat fruit or handle certain raw foods? That’s terrible! How do you eat??
My son cannot eat apples, carrots or nuts other than peanuts. They all cause that itchy, tightening throat. It just pains me. But he CAN eat applesauce, which I think is odd.
I’ve heard fruits are classified as that which grows above ground, so technically avocados and tomatoes are fruits. Veggies grow underground. But then that doesn’t explain peppers and pumpkins, so I don’t know.

Salicylates in lime, hm? Makes sense. I have had allergies to that particular chemical for years. It didn’t used to give me headaches, though, but it used to cause my ears to ring badly enough that I’d have to lie down.

I finally had to upgrade to one of my prescription painkillers, the Tylenol just doesn’t do beans for me. But after that and a good night’s sleep I recovered, thank God!

I think there is actually so much genetic altering of food nowadays, that this must be what lies at the root of allergies. Not that anyone in the JAMA is going to admit that, it would put half the food producers in our country out of business now.

I couldn’t live without steamed white rice. When my tum is upset it’s about the only thing I can eat. (with all respect to you K&D, not trying to make you sick by mentioning it!)

Mimz-it makes sense that your son can eat applesauce cuz its cooked.

i can eat any fruit thats been cooked or canned-thats how i get by….oh and grapes….i eat lots of those!

the funny thing is, i’m allergic to the raw pork and chicken, but work in the meat dept. at a grocery store! lol

The fruit allergies started in middle school (don’t remember who asked that?!) but some have panned out, while others have gotten worse.

Ugh, the blue dye in M & M’s or any blue dye (including pills that are dyed blue) gives me a major migraine for 3 days. I feel your pain Mimz! I hope you feel better and I just drink a ton of water to try and flush it out of my system and vitamin C helps too.

Mimz, I thought fruits are characterized by being the seed of the plant, and vegetables are the plant, but not sure!

                                Pineapple & Pawpaw for food.

All things scented strongly including laundry detergent (that wasn’t fun to find out), shower gels etc.

Running also makes me break out in a rash – something about the change in temperature. I get it when I leave aircon or heated roms into the outside world. So strange.

Most animals as well as hay

                                We’re a sickly bunch here aren’t we!

OMG, I don’t know how you all survive!  Poor dears, the lot of you.

I get a little sniffly around cats, sometimes.  But I don’t really like cats, so it’s not really an issue.

C&C, you’re allergic to animals and hay?!  And that works how?!

You’d be surprised, Lightchick – there is more than one member on here with multiple house rabbits who are allergic to hay! They love the danged furballs so much that they give the hay indoors, but vacuum religiously… it’s all for the bunnylove.

Vacuum religeously, who me? HAHAHAHA! I just suffer through it and get BF to feed them so I don’t come into contact with the hay.

I can’t imagine how people allergic to fruit survive, but hey I’m vegan and if I didn’t have fruit I’d lose a major part of my diet. I heard that people allergic to fruit are also often allergic to salady stuff like capsicum, tomato etc (those are fruit aren’t they).

digxmexnow – I have a firend who also feels like he’s allergic to life. He hates going outside cause everything gives him hives but inside isn’t much better cause dust chokes him up. He just suffers through it too cause he’s built up a resistance to the drugs

Hey Scarlet Rose – one time I drank something blue – at a bar – BIG MISTAKE!   Although, something tells me it was the large amount of alcohol not the blue coloring.

Any way, I have not been able to drink anything blue since!

It’s difficult for those with allergies and intolerances. MSG is also a natural food chemical found in soy sauce, mushies and tomatoes to name a few.

random fruit allergy fact… if you have an allergic reaction (itching, tingly lips/tongue/throat) to fruit with a “skin” (apples, pears, peach, etc…) you probably aren’t allergic to the fruit but to tree pollen. Different tree pollens are structurally similar to what’s in the skin of fruit and it causes a cross-reaction. So for example, I’m really allergic to maple pollen, and maple pollen is really similar structurally to what’s in apple skins so I can’t eat an apple without my lips getting all itchy and red! (I’m not actually sure if maple = apple, I’m allergic to so many trees that I’ve forgotten what trees are associated with what fruit skin!) Of course, it doesn’t really matter since the end result is the same but it’s kinda cool

Oh, so moral of the story… if you think you’re allergic to a fruit because your lips get itchy… try taking the skin off of it and eating it and it might be better (Although allergies like the ones allenj described are different and due to the actual fruit- this just applies to ones that make your immediate mouth area itchy according to my doc…)

I’m also allergic to sour mix so no amaretto sours, etc for me anymore! Luckily I can drink blue drinks though

Annette here. Generic allergies — everything. No one ever believes me when I have to put that on forms and stuff but yes I tested positive to everything. So yes that means I’m allergic to all the pets etc, but I can’t imagine my life without them.

Food allergies: wild rice, red wine, mangos, seafood, MSG, sometimes chocolate/cheese/nuts. Comes with being migraine-prone. The mangos are more of an itching/breathing thing – I once had a shampoo/conditioner that had mango in it, I didn’t realize it at first but in the shower I thought wow my throat is getting really scratchy… had to wash my hair a few times to really get that out. Same thing happened when my hair dresser decided to use a mango-infused spray on my hair. Seafood I just can’t digest most of it

But I love blue drinks, lol.

I have asked restaurants to make food without MSG before, but I think judging by my reactions, they must put it in anyway or they already have the food prepared and don’t bother telling me. I just avoid the food altogether.

I also recently discovered I am allergic to a favorite; port wine. I used to drink it all the time and now it makes me sneeze terribly and my breathing gets bad. Totally unexpected, that.

I’ve seen a bottle of wine that dispenses this agent when you open it to do the same thing!

I wound up not being able to breathe hardly all evening, even Zyrtec didn’t help, and I blistered at the lip, felt hives forming all down my windpipe and in my ear canals. itchy, bloodshot eyes and throat and I’ve had stomach/intestinal upset for days since having THREE SIPS. >_<

I’m thinking maybe even peroxide won’t help this, but I’ll give it one more shot. (No pun intended.)

Grapes have high levels of salicylates, amines and glutamates(msg), so if you’re sensitive to these natural food chemicals, I’d say wine is a no go.

Is it just the aging and fermenting that causes the salycilates to form? (I KNOW I have an allergy to those, as I can’t take aspirin or Peptos Bismol without getting ringing in my ears and stomach upset.)

So many have reactions to wine these days, it’s hard to determine what the problem is. I’m not saying it’s these food chemicals in you case, just remembered you mentioning allergy to salicylates before. I remember reading a womans book whos daughter had reactions to salicylates. It would send her into hypoglycemic episode. They’d give her a spoonful of sugar and she’d turn right around. Weird.
