So i went to PETCO yesterday because I ran out of litter for TigerLily’s box, and I found this stuff which was cheaper than care fresh or eco bedding which I was buying before.

I’d like your opinion on it, I found it to be very clean and it doesnt smell bad at all! I normally have to change her litter every day because her urine is so strong but this really covers the smell even close up. I’ve enclosed a link.

Let me know what you all think.

it is described online as a wood shaving type, but it feels like care fresh it feels papery.

hmmm. It says it’s made from wood fibers that are not suitable for paper. Does anyone know the typical wood that is used for paper? What wood fibers do they mean?

Does it have a strong scent or ??? how does it smell to you? And is your bunny taking to it?

Hi Bunnyfoofoo! I saw this in the pet store, so cuiroius, I picked up the bag to read it and had the same exact thoughts that BB did.  Wood fibers not suitable for paper processing.  Any wood, soft or hard is used for paper making and I really wonder at what point these unsuitable fibers are sorted out from the “suitable” ones and if it is before or after any chemical processing. So it really is best not to use this stuff because harwoods are bad for a rabbit to eat and can be toxic and pine that has not been processed like wood stove pellets emits phenols which can cause liver and/or kidney damamge.

It also appears that the fiber sorting happens in the pulping stage, of which any method can be used and my instinct tells me that one or more of those ways involves harmful chemicals.

Here is more good information on the paper making process if you are curious to learn more:

O.K. I am really sorry I looked at methods of pulping.   I saw things from cyanide and hydrogen sulfide to bleach. So please tell me Care Fresh uses environmentally friendly paper?

I have been using the Original Soft-Sorbent litter myself lately (they had a buy 1 get one free sale at Petco a while back so I decided to try it). I like that it’s fragrance free. I use yesterday’s news on the bottom and then a layer of this stuff on top because Noelle likes it better that way. I also like that I can scoop it out of the bag with a cup and scatter evenly over the top – whereas the Carefresh I have to pull out and break apart with my hands. My bunny doesn’t eat it or anything, so I wasn’t really worried about that.

It is nice and soft, and I like it overall, so I’ll probably keep using it – but I don’t think I’d use the lavender stuff because of the smell.

TigerLily doesn’t eat it, she is very finicky. It smells nice but it has real Lavender buds in it i didnt think it was bad for bunny bc it was natural.

Now Im scared, there are so many contradicting reports on litter. TigerLily did not like Feline pine

She doesnt spend a lot of time in the litter box she is always playing. I guess i wont buy it again once it ends.

Litter is tough to decide upon. I think that the lavender stuff is yet another one of those products marketed to appeal to the pet owner and not necessarily because it is safe for your pet. FYI – lavender flowers are OK! In fact my two enjoy munching on them as well as chamomile. If you have a natural food store near you they may sell organic dried ones in bulk that you can add to hay as a nice treat.

I used it for awhile, and I think it’s great in many ways, except it sticks to fur like crazy. It’s very soft and super absorbent, and doesn’t have the dust problems that Carefresh does. It also is completely odorless, while Carefresh has a slight scent. Maybe if your bun is short haired it’d be good.

Oh, but I’ll add that I’d personally stay away from any scented litters… go with the original unscented.

You’re welcome! You can daub some lavender oil on a cotton ball and set it near by to scent the room too. I have a diffuser for pure essential oil as well. I am a lavender addict.
