So here is the deal. A few months back two black rabbits showed up on my street. They were free to rome around where they pleased. Turns out that they were male/female. Then all of a suddon their was about 6 more rabbits/babies. Last night my sister killed a baby bunnie. I set out to find where he got it from and I found the den under a pile of wood but nothing was in there. So I kept looking around the area (we have old snowmbiles and piles of firewood.)I moved some boards and I saw a little bunnie. So I got a net and scared him into the net and put him into a cage. He is shy but lets you hold him and pet him. A few hours after that I checked to see if their was anything in the den and their was about 4-5 more babies so I blocked off every hole I could.

Turns out that it didn’t work, I found another dead baby in the lawn this morning. So I uncovered the den to get the babies out since they are old enough to walk around themselfs I knew if I took them they would be fine. But once I uncovered it the babies were gone. My question is that since I covered it back up and put some logs back where they were will they come back? I really need/want to catch these poor guys before any more die. I’m going to catch all the bigger rabbits as well and put them into cages. I just want to make sure they will come back so I can catch them. Or did I mess up and have to hope for the best?

It is possible that they will return. Since they are around your neighborhood, they are used to the scent of humans so it won’t scare them off.

Thank you for trying to rescue the little guys. Someone just set their pair of rabbits loose and this is what happens. You’ll want to contact a local shelter or rabbit rescue ASAP.

                  Oh, that makes more sense!

Can you put out treats for them to lure them back? Bunnies like sweet things, carrots and apples and bananas and other fruit. Some lettuce or herbs, too. Here’s the thing, though–they learn really quick. If you try to catch them with, say, a cardboard box, and you fail, you’re probably not going to get near them with a cardboard box again. You may have to have multiple capture-methods for all of them…

Poor bunnies. Thank you so much for being so nice to them!

The adult bunnies are going to be caught with a cat trap that I’m going to place under a bush that they like to go in. If that doesn’t work I will place it some where else. The den isn’t that deep so I’m going to get some boards and board off an area so if they get past me they are still stuck in the area to where I can catch them. I’ll lift up the logs and catch them if they come back. I caught one of them last night when they took off and tried to get away from the cat. He/she is doing good and is very sweet. I just hope they come back because we have feral cats around my house that will get them as well.

Something else you’ll want to do is that as soon as you catch the momma bun is to get her to a vet ASAP and have her spayed before anymore litters are born.

Awe poor little things.  I don’t have much experience catching loosed buns.  I do have an idea tho.

Can you get a big sheet and cover the places around the logs where they run away from you and trap them like that?  Have someone with you to help out while you do it this way? The other person can keep the buns from running out from under the sheet and catch them easier hopefully.

I don’t know if any one has done it this way b4.

Birdguy, is there a rabbit rescue close by to you?  They might be able to offer some assitance and might I suggest that you cover the cage with an old towel? That way it is more appealing and “safe” for them.  Do you have any idea how old they are?  They are going to need to be separated by sex when the grow.

Here is more information – I know that they are not newborns but they still apply to when they get older:
