Has anyone ever done this? There was an article in the newspaper about freezing herbs for the winter. It said that basil worked very well. I’m afraid that when it thaws, it would be mushy. I would love to be able to stock up now!

do you have a need to freeze them? i know in my local store there is always a wide variety available. i’m not sure how they’d stand up to freezing, but i guess you could always buy a bunch and try.

I live around alot of farms, they sell herbs very cheap this time of year.

oh! well in that case, i’d suggest you freeze a bunch, then try and thaw it out in a few days and see what happens. experiment before you buy a whole ton.

I too think it would be mushy and have not heard of using this type of method. I would be interested in what you find out from this experiement but I would not invest a lot of money at first. Try it with a sprig first, then decide if you want to buy a busshel or not.

I think that freezing works fine if you are using the herbs for cooking – but they wouldn’t stand up well as fresh veggies/greens for your bun.

I’ve been freezing mint/rosemary/basil etc for years, but only for mojito mix, pesto, cooking needs.

The only other way to preserve them is drying…Which could be fine if you want to mix them in with your hay.

I don’t know about freezing, but we just bought some potted parsley and rosemary plants that we keep in the kitchen. They seem fairly easy to take care of, and as long as we only give a little bit each day, I think they’ll last a long time. Now we just need to find a store that still sells potted mint plants at this time of year.

I did not try it yet. When I went to my farm stands they all were out of basil. I got parsley and cilantro though. I will try freezing some today.

please let us know how it goes. if it works and they don’t turn tu mush, that could also work for people who might have trouble getting to the store in winter…

i had some flat leaf italian parsley in my mini fridge for pepper, and the fridge was on wayyy to high, and the veggies froze….then when they thawed they were all mushy, so i just threw them out. so i dunno how well it would work

Well, I just got the herbs out of the freezer. The parsley looked OK, the cilantro was brittle. I just threw the frozen herbs in with some fresh romaine and the buns are eating it up! I did notice that the parsley was getting very limp, but if the buns eat it fast it shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll let you know if they eat it all.

You’re giving it to them frozen? Interesting. I thought the point was to freeze and revive it… It doesn’t bother their teeth to slurp it up frozen?

The herbs thawed out really fast. They ate the cilantro with no problems, but the parsley turned mushy and now it is stuck in my lion head’s fur! Oh well, I guess it was worth a try. I will try basil next time.

I walked past a book about herbs in the library yesterday so I grabbed it and had a quick look.

For freezing sprays of herbs, it recommended using fresh sprays, washed then wrapped in aluminium foil. Guess you make like a packet shape and seal it up well. It said they keep for several weeks this way.

Also, for cooking purposes, chop finely, mix with little water and freeze in ice cube trays.

I have heard parsley freezes well. I’ve wrapped celery foil in the fridge before and it does last longer so prehaps using foil for freezing does have some merit.
