I went to petsmart today and I was looking for some new hay for Tucker to try.  I decided to finally try some of the oxbow but I already had some plain timothy left at home and so I was looking for something to switch things up a bit.  I decided to get some brome hay and some botanical blend.  The botanical blend is western timothy with dried herbs in it.  It smells wonderful!  Is this ok to use as a daily hay though?  Or does this need to be used as a treat?

Sadly there was still no papaya tablets or critter berries there   The vet recommended dried papaya though and so we got some of that from the grocery store on Friday.   There were these balls there.  I forget the brand..but they looked like hay that was in a tiny ball?  I was going to get some as a treat for Tucker since we’re trying to come up with things that Mike can give her that are better for her then raisins, but I didn’t know if those were junk food or if they were good for her.  I’ll look and see if I can find out what they were called online..

Petsmart also didn’t have anything made from willow and that was disappointing since Tucker just finished off her willow ball that we had gotten from Petco   I’ll have to try the other pet store in town before we leave for our trip.

We decided after the Friday vet trip that it’d be better if Tucker did NOT go with us on vacation.  She was pretty scared in the car and while for that trip it was fine I worried that being shuffled from place to place over 5 days would be too much for her.  My mom (who is going with us) said that she could stay in her walk in closet and my nephew and dad would go in there to feed her and play with her.  This way she’s away from the dogs and their cats at all times.  There’s a door into their bathroom and then there is another door that leads into their closet.  So, that way there is always two doors in between the dogs and Tucker   My nephew loves Tucker and always wants to play with her but since he’s only here for short periods she never comes around to him.  He’s 14 so I think he’s old enough with my dad’s supervision (i.e. making sure she’s fed!) that he’ll be a good temporary caregiver for her!  My mom is going to buy another box of NIC cubes because she’d feel better if Tucker’s pen had a lid while she was there so that if in case the dogs DID get in the room by any freak accident there’d be yet another barrier between her and them.  So..looks like I’ll be doing some real building for this 5 day trip lol.  While my dad and Mike are off getting the rental van I will be building Tucker’s vacation home!  She’s not going to be a happy bunny because at 2 grids by 3 grids it will be considerably smaller then her 3 grid by 5 grid pen that she already begs to come out of the second she sees us in the morning, but I think it will be roomy enough for the short period of time.  She’ll also be able to run around the whole walk in in the evenings with Kevin (my nephew).   I think I’ll also make her a little shelf for the condo so she doesn’t miss out on her jumping spot

I think this is when I know I am bun-whipped.  I’ve been worrying over this trip for the longest time because of where she’s going to go and how she’ll be taken care of.  She’s a bunny diva and I’m sure I’ll be doing a lot of making up to her when we get back!!

These were the balls.  After reading the ingredients I think I was right not to buy them.  They’re definitely not just hay rolled into a ball…

-whew- i’m glad you found a place for her while on vacation. diva bunnies don’t sound like good stowaways for road trips. i’m having the same issue with my bun, i’m headed to florida this winter and for the time being, i’m still working on what to do with my bonnie! i wish i had a nephew to watch her!
                have fun on your trip!

Ah I’ve seen those before, I love how they look and are marketed like some all natural healthy treat and then WHAM look at those crappy ingredients!! UGH!

Glad you figured out what your doing for your vaca! I think you made the right decision for Tucker

From Bunspace – the critter berries have been discontinued…….

“Thank you for contacting Oxbow. We certainly understand your frustration
about Critter Berries being discontinued. Unfortunately, we ran into
problems sourcing ingredients and manufacturing Critter Berries, so we
have been forced to discontinue the product.

I am happy to let you know that we are currently working on an exciting
new line of treats that is set to launch in a few months! The line
includes a variety of nutritious snacks for small animals.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience that discontinuing Critter
Berries may have caused. Please feel free to contact Oxbow if you have
                    any further questions or concerns.”

the only good things I saw in that treat were the herbs. gosh..  You know I looked at treats at the pet store here and I found one to contain 25% fat.  Now that is a whopping too much fat for our buns.  3.5% fat at the most. I think fruit are better treats than what is sold in pet stores.  I steer way clear of those yogurt treats.  It pays to read ingredients and fat content.

I do more reading of ingredients of my  buns foods and stuff than my own food.

Awe Your Tucker doesn’t like to travel.  I would be worried too.  No matter who I my bun with.  Fortunately I have a bunny owner and bunny savy friend that could keep mine if I traveled.  Still you worry.

By the way I am kawthar.  My name comes up as kawthar on the chat room.

Yes – Oxbow seems to be making dried papaya treats ( no sugar) I did a test market survey on packaging.

I bought a couple of left over bags ( critter berries) from my Vet who still had them in stock from their last re-stock.

But the new papaya treats look perfect – no sugar, straight papaya.

As to boarding, my exotic vet has a boarding service. I have visited the buns in the “spa” [ as I like to think about it] when there and it looks lovely. Busy, happy buns…lots of socialization. Not tooooo expensive, but a good option for us when we go for more than a day or so.
