› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › My cousin is soo lucky to be alive right now! *Graphic images of my cousin’s car crash where everyone survived*
I’m not generally a religious person but I kind of feel the urge to start attending church or something. My sis called me up to say that Carl (my cousin who is the same age as me) had been in a really bad accident & is in hospital right now. She didn’t know any other details at the time.
He is fine now, he had some head injuries but they’re all minor & although he will have some scars he wont be otherwise affected. Of the two other people in the car, one had some fairly serious internal injuries but is doing well after surgery & the other walked free.
Basically the car hit a tree at very high speeds, rolled, split in half & the front half landed in the river. The back had the seriously injured friend so it was so lucky that it didn’t land in the river!
I’m just so thankful that I’m not reporting different news right now! Everyone is going to be ok but it makes me think of the statistics in Oz, that young males are 3 times more likely to die in car accidents than any other group. I’m so relieved, I had to share and I hope the pictures didn’t disturb anyone.

O my! I dont know how anyone survived that but thankfully everyone did.
Im glad everyone is okay and not badly injured to the point of impacting their whole lives at least
WOW!! I can see why you feel you should start church! That’s incredible-glad everyones fine!
HOLY-!!
It looks impossible that anyone would walk from that!!!! A God thing for SURE!! O-O
oh my word. the car is completely unrecognizable. thank goodness everyone is doing okay. seeing that car, you would think otherwise.
um . . . WOW!
Wow. It’s incredible that someone could walk away from that mostly unharmed. Living through something like that would certainly make someone re-evaluate their life.
Glad your cousin is okay.
omg i cant believe everyone was pretty much ok, thats amazing, the car is a total right off, wow im so pleased no-one was hurt
Holy cow. It is a miracle anyone survived and I am relieved that you aren’t reporting a different story right now. My best to all involved a healthy recovery.
0_0 Thank God everyone survived that wreck! My prayers to your family that everyone has a speedy recovery!
…
Okay, my son is NOT getting his license till he’s THIRTY-FIVE!!! >_<
lol mimz, would you be happy even if he was 35?
Yep, my brother has been banned from getting his license by my parents, who have freaked out over this. From what I hear, my cousin was driving and driving fast (they said maybe 140km) and is going to face criminal charges over this. Now that everyone has gotten over the joy of him being alive, they’re really mad!
Side note – Carl had about 140 stitches…yowch
BUMP
As I said, my cousin is going to face criminal charges over this. His case began recently and he’s looking at some serious prison time. I feel so bad for him that he’s going to go to jail (and he will go to jail) for this but the government is getting really tough on reckless driving because so many young people are dying on Aussie roads.
I guess I’m just really annoyed at the justice system because even though he caused this accident by his speeding, he wasn’t drinking or on drugs at the time, since the accident he’s completely changed his life and become a much better human being, and while he should face consequences for his actions, I don’t think jail is the right idea. Jail will take him away from his pregnant wife and very young son, and he’s the sole earner.
I don’t know. I don’t know what the right thing to do in a situation like this is, I just feel very badly for everyone involved. One stupid decision is all it takes.
Honestly though.. he should have thought of his family before driving stupidly ![]()
wow! i hadnt seen this thread before… how amazing that everyone survived!
i was in a far far less serious accident in 2000 that totalled my car. i was at fault for failing to yeild (some one waived me through but the way wasnt clear). i only had a bruised foot and a scuffed nose but it scared the crap outta me and i sure learned my lesson about driving more carefully. i know this accident is different… wrecklessly high speeds and serious injury… but i am surprised that there is jail time. the harm done wasnt intentional. i get the point of harsh punishment to scare him and serve as an example but still.
a friend of mine lost her 20-something yr old stepson when he was stabbed by a supposed friend at a party after they fought about something stupid. it took about a week or 2 for this guy to get caught, about a year before he went to trial and then he plead guilty and got a low sentence. with time served and reduced sentencing i think he served less than 5 yrs for killing some one. pathetic. really pathetic. we are in different countires – i realize – but its frustrating isnt it?
its great that he has turned some things around in his life. i hope that he doesnt face too long of a sentence.
Don’t worry monkeybun, no-one is disputing that. In fact I believe my aunty, when the hospital called her, said something along the lines of “he better be dead otherwise I’m going to f*ing kill him”, and everyone else had basically the same reaction.
All I have to ask is; what car? It looks more like a pile of scrap metal (which I suppose it is now!). That is one thing that I am so very grateful for; my boyfriend drives ‘old woman’ slow. He’ll go the speed limit most of the time, but still, he doesn’t have the ego that I see a lot of male drivers have. I wish that more men could have this simulated in order to teach them the lesson before this happens. At least everyone is okay!
how fast is 140 km in mph? i have a huge philosophy of math final tomorrow and i cannot do math right now :p
It’s actually not that fast when I think about limits in USA. It’s apparently 87 mph. Here though, the top speed is usually 68mph so it’s fast. I wouldn’t drive that fast, it’d scare me.
its still pretty fast. for some reason, i had in my head that australia doesn’t have speed limits? don’t know where that came from o.O
Well, up until very recently, the state that I live in didn’t have speed limits so that might be where you got it from. This state also has the highest number of deaths in road accidents per capita (somewhat unsurprising). The state where that accident happened is a lot more strict and they really enforce speed limits.
he wasn’t drinking or on drugs at the time, since the accident he’s completely changed his life and become a much better human being, and while he should face consequences for his actions, I don’t think jail is the right idea. Jail will take him away from his pregnant wife and very young son, and he’s the sole earner.
I think all this is taken into account when it comes to sentencing. It does also depend on who is doing the sentencing I guess. Alot of it is more about a demonstrating intolerance of this kind of driving. Still, it has further impact on the defendant at the end of the day. Since he’s changed his way I would think he’d have more impact out in the community and telling of his experience. Warning careless drivers.
I feel sad when I see these type of court cases going thru where there has been life-changing injury or death. So often it is young offenders and the families of the victims want their heads. But I can bet it could have easily been their own family member behind the wheel on a different night. Many of these youth that are passengers know they’re going out for a joy-ride.
