Gwah! Why do these things always happen when I’m sick!?
I just noticed that Little-Bit is hiding and looking like she’s not feeling good (pressing stomach to ground, droopy eyes). She won’t eat or drink or even take Mylicon but she IS pooping and she is NOT bloated.
WHAT on earth!?
I’ve not changed anything in her environment, and while I -have- been sleeping all day (since I’m sick) I CAN recall bunny noises from earlier. (ie, hopping up and down different levels, chewing on bars, etc.) I have taken her out on the bed and have her isolated under mom’s supervision.
I have found some odd-looking very mushy stuck together poops that I guess at least resemble cecals along with a few odd REALLY tiny poops as well. But what we’ve seen come out of her since she’s been on my mom’s bed is normal-sized.
Help!?!?
Bump?
is there an ER vet you can go to? it sounds like it might be the onset of stasis. i’ll email the other CLs.
=s I think I should add that she is laying in a bun-loaf a lot but…she has also been ‘laying out’ with her feet out like a normal bunny.
I’ve read that sometimes bunnies can just get into ‘slumps’ for whatever reason. So I’m kind of hoping that’s what this is. But I’m certainly not taking anything for granted.
Anyway. I’m very, VERY leary about taking her to a vet other than our normal vet because of what happened to Binkles..
The strange pressing of the belly on the floor indicates intestinal pain. How long has it been since she has eaten? Do you have pellet mash/pumpkin you can hand feed her?
I’m not really sure how long it’s been since she’s eaten. I’ve been sleeping all day and she could or could not have eaten hay during that time.
I do have some pure pumkin in a can.
Should I be encouraging her to move or let her rest?
Sometimes cecals break up and they lose their little pieces. Is this what you’re seeing?
You mentioned chewing. What has she chewed? Can you find whatever it was?
No gurgling from the tummy?
And WHY does stuff like this always happen so close to the weekend? I agree with Beka, that if she can go to a vet, just to be safe, it would be the best thing. And yes, I understand your not wanting her to go to the vet Binkles saw…is there anyone else available?
Sending healing vibes! ((((((((Lil’ Bit))))))))))
Well, now she’s hopping around and exploring and eating and drinking!
Man, I just don’t know what to think anymore! xDD
Well just keep an eye on her, as long as shes eating and pooping then she sounds good
Maybe just a bit of gas or such?
That’s what I’m thinking/ hoping anyway. =s I didn’t notice any decrease in poop size until this happened. And in fact, just last night I was marveling at how big and round they were. (Lol…only a bunny person..) And the pile she’s left me with since look pretty normal.
Does this happen very often with everyone else’s buns? Gas attacks, I mean?
This is my first gas episode with Little-Bit, so I’m a little nervous. Like I said, I haven’t changed anything in her environment or anything. She hasn’t had the opportunity to eat anything strange. The only thing that’s been out of the ordinary of late is that I’ve been sick..
..maybe since she’s so in tune with me..
=( I’d better get well fast! She has seemed rather worried; spending a lot more time in her sentry while I’m asleep up there.
Do…you really think that’s possible, guys? That she got her tummy upset because I’m sick..?
Dang…I’d better learn to hide my illness…like…like a BUNNY! X3
Anyway.
Since I’ve now been through apparent gas episodes with Binkles AND Little-Bit, I’m beginning to wonder how much this sort of thing may happen without our even noticing it; we’re asleep or at work/ school, out-and-about for whatever reason. Since gas episodes are so short (a few hours, normally?), could it be that the times we actually notice it happening are but one of many?
it might happen somewhat frequently. the thing with the gas drops is it’s really unconfirmed if they help the process, or if the gas episode will pass naturally in the same length of time. they’re not dangerous, so it’s fine to give them either way.
Meadow actually had an episode the other day. the bunnies spent hours in their maze. i was busy all day, doing various things and in the evening i noticed that there were not many poops in the litterbox. i had just cleaned it out earlier and i only saw Max’s larger ones. Mead’s are a bit smaller so i can easily tell the difference. i had heard munching all day, but i’m guessing it might have been primarily Max. so when i notice that Meadow is not herself, sitting in her wood house, not hanging out with Max, i turn to the tried and true trick of seeing if something is wrong with her. i shake the papya tablet container. Max goes BERSERK. Meadow just sits in her house. so right away i whisk her out, give her a belly massage for a few minutes while Mike gets the gas drops ready. we give them to her and put her back in the pen with Max. within an hour or so she was eating a little bit, and she had left a small pile of poos in the box. satisfied, i went to bed. i did get up to check on her twice, and then my wonderful husband woke me at 5 am when he got up for work to tell me she was munching away on hay.
it’s possible that it does happen and we never even realize. i thnk most of us do not wake up every hour to check on bunnies. it’s when they don’t seem to get better that the concern needs to set in.
what gas drops do you give them and how many?
the gas drops are simethicone. also known as baby gas drops, Mylicon, Lil Tummies. you can get it at any drugstore (CVS, Walgreens) or discount store (wal-mart, target). the off-brand is fine, so if you go and there’s the store brand of infant gas drops, that is fine to use. make sure it’s pure simethicone, no other added medications like for diarrhea. i give about .5cc, sometimes less. it’s a good thing to have on-hand. i will recommend that you check with your vet and get their thoughts on using it first tho.
