I have a slight problem, im going on a trip to portland oregon for 9 days. problem is, all 5 girls i live with are going on the trip as well (its for the architecture school and we are all architect majors) i called my vet and he said he would board a rabbit but its ten dollars a day to board. i have the money but i was looking for a place that would actually let him out for play time…which is hard to find. lol. another place said they wouldnt do it because its too stressful for the rabbit which makes me worry. any suggestions? has any one boarded their rabbit? if so where? did they get play time or were they cooped up the whole time?

i would have someone come to my house, but all my friends are architect majors!

I have boarded a rabbit both at the House Rabbit Society and the local, rabbit friendly vet. Both of them gave the bun about an hour of ‘play time’ in an x-pen. The vet, for an extra $5 a day gives them an hour play time in the ‘cardboard castle’ – a stack of boxes with holes cut out of it.

Although it might not be what they like, being boarded for 10 days in a cage will be survivable for a bun – not to mention how much they’ll love you when you come back and rescue them.

If you can get him down to Virginia I’d be willing too!! Hehe!! I think he should be ok for 10 days.

aw thanks big sis! lol thanks for the advice guys…i am trying to find a friend to just come to my house everyday to feed him, but that might be too much responsibility to put on someone. theres a house rabbit society in indianapolis, and i have to stay there a day before i board my plane, so i might try to give them a call and see if they can keep him…hmm i will look into that.

BTW, $10 a day to board is an AMAZING price. I can’t find someone who will do it less than $30.

thats good to know! i didnt really have any thing to compare it to, so i wasnt sure if ten dollars was a good or bad price. but no matter what price it is i have the money, i dont get a pet unless i have the cash to take care of them. i get 3500 dollars every 18 weeks for school, so i always have extra money. i try to save as much as i can, so moneys never a problem. I just have to pay it all back when im done!

If u have a friend come over once a day to feed etc, if something goes wrong they may not notice until it’s too late, or they may not notice at all.

i also emailed the house rabbit society in indy, to see if they can board him, im waiting for an email back. if anything i will keep him at the vets, so that he will be under good supervision.

Before I had reliable pet sitters, I boarded my bunnies at the local HRS. They did a great job.

BTW – my husband is an architect, and he said the hardest thing about his whole career was school!

lol well that is a relief! school is VERY hard! and time consuming! reason being i got a rabbit because he sleeps while i am in class for the most part, and then is awake when i get home. good to know its hopefully going to get a bit easier!

I am hoping to get an email back from IHRS. that would be the best place to keep him i think.

I actually just live 20 miles north of you!!! It’s nice to see someone close by now and then. I wish I could help, but I”ve only had my bun for about 4 days now, and I’m sure you want someone with a little more expericance than me. I hope you find someone, and if i can be of any help anytime just ask.

See if the vet will keep your rabbit in an x-pen while you are gone and care for him. I left my two with a rabbit-sitter that I found out about from my local HRS. Give your local rabbit rescue a call and see, most have x-pen type set-ups and may even charge less.

the closest rabbit rescue is about 45 mins away, in indy. i will try to find the number to call, because i have to stay there before i board my plane anyway. i still havent heard back from the IHRS

I have gone to a local place that i thought was really nice and they would only board my bunnies in the cat section, and i had to bring my own cage.  and i didn’t even mention “run around time”, they would have laughed at me.  NOT COOL AT ALL!!!

ohhh… and i have 4 rabbits, so that would have bee CRAZY bringing 4 cages over there.

i end up paying someone from the local rabbit rescue to come to my house 2 x a day and feed and pet the bunnies.  i think i paid her like $20 a day.  but at least i knew she was trained and knew about rabbit behavior.

just wanted to tell everyone that my dad actually OFFERED of his OWN WILL to take pepper for the week im gone. i called him and was talking to him about how i was going to house pepper at the vets, and he said oh well ill take him for you! lol!

If anyone remembers my dad was COMPLETELY AGAINST me getting a rabbit…now look at him, hes been sucked in by the cuteness!

I will just have to remind him not to give human food or too many raisins! he loves to give pepper treats, and my dog too. and now my dog is fat from eating too much human food from my dad. lol! im afraid im going to come home to a pepper who looks like a furry jabba the hut!

I will give him STRICT feeding instructions and vet numbers and attach a pen to his cage in my room

Excellent! Be sure to give him the BB web-address in case he has any questions.  And start thinking of suitable bribes to give the forum leaders so they’ll delete your “Bunny Balls” thread before your dad finds out you’ve been looking at rabbit porn!
