So I have two male bunnies, both under 6 months old. One I have had for several months already and is pretty bonded to me already. The other has just been given to me within the last two weeks, it was a rescued bun.  My first bunny is very outgoing, loves playing with the cat and exploring. The other one is shyer, probably still settling in.

Anyway I let the new one settle in to his own cage, and the last two days, I tried two 15 minute bonding sessions between my two buns. As of right now, neither one is neutered (I wasn’t expecting this other bunny to come into my life). I am planning on at least getting my first bunny neutered. In the meantime, should I keep them totally separated? My first bunny can hop around my room freely and sniff the cage of the other bunny. The problem is that there is nonstop mounting (my first one always going after my new one). It doesn’t seem to be a dominance thing and the new bunny doesn’t fight back but sometimes hops away. It seems more like my bunny just goes into hormonal overdrive! Any advice about how to proceed would be much appreciated.

Keep them separated, yes. Unaltered males will fight viciously and try to injure each other…until both are neutered they can’t be kept together.

Ok thanks, I wasn’t sure because they are both quite young still.

Yes – it is a good idea to keep them bonded. I have two neutered males that accidentally got into the same cage when one broke out of his own cage, and the fight was very bad, and one bunny had bites all over, and a cut eyelid, and a bad cut on his lip. Also, it could be difficult for you to bond them in the future if they get in a big fight now.

Are you positive they are both male? Not many people are very good at sexing bunnies, so I would highly recommend taking them both to a vet to be checked out and sexed – I don’t want you to suddenly have 9 rabbits instead of 2!

absolutely keep them separate until they are both sexed by a vet. it’s hard for even experienced bunny people to get the sex right sometimes. while there, ask the vet about neutering and see if you can possibly make appts to have them both done at the same time. boys can be neutered rather young, at about 3-4 months.
