Hey.  So I’ve been trying to litter train my 8 mo girl for a couple weeks.  She LOVEs her litterbox, and as far as I can tell, pees only inside the litter box (she did go on a rug I had, but when she’s in her cage she goes in the box foolproof.)  But, she’s pooing just as much outside the box as in it.  This is an improvement, because the first week she wouldn’t go AT ALL in the box.

My question: The more I clean the poo from outside the box, the more it seems she goes poo out of the box.  Do I stop worrying about the poo issue until she’s spayed (2 weeks to go)?  Should I just be happy she’s peeing in the box with rare accidents?  Anything more I can do?

This will taper off after the spay.  She may be marking with poo instead of urine.  Territorial poops are spread out.  Perhaps she is eating while standing outside of her litterbox and going there as she eats.  It usually gets better.

pee is the biggie. only peeing in the box is great. some bunnies will always drop poos, even after altering. fortunately they are easy enough to pick-up or suck up with a hand vac. mine were dropping stray poos around the hay bin, so i moved it where they can only get to it when inside the litterbox. it solved the problem immediately.

She’s in a cage now. Do you think once I have her pen and use her cage as the litterbox she might be better about it because there will be more litterbox space? Why are bunnies territorial? It’s just me and her. Thanks.

what are you planning on doing? you are going to attach a pen to her existing cage, or just get an xpen and litterbox. i’d suggest a litterbox b/c it’s a smaller area, you’ll use less litter and it might be less confusing for her. my buns only pee in one half of their big litterbox, so a small area is not a problem and makes clean-up much easier. does putting the hay in the box make a difference with her?

I got an Xpen (should get it in the mail today or tomorrow).  Her cage is sadly pretty small, but I also have a litterbox.  While I’m training her should I use both?  The little one in her pen and her current cage outside for roam time?  Also, any suggestions on the best cleaning solution for if she pees on white carpet?  The hay in her box does seem to help (she loves being in the box, she’ll strain herself to eat food while being in the box if I accidentally don’t put it close enough :p)  Thanks for the help Beka.

well, my bun isn’t spayed AND is a boy…and since I’ve started with his training, using the tips from this website, he’s getting better and better! He doesn’t pee outside of his litter and almost never poops anymore exept when his butt is out of his litter box xD he’s so clumsy. I methodicly clean each time he does go in his litter and I think he’s starting to get it.

it does take a few days though, an he isn’t perfect yet.

are you putting down alternate flooring under the xpen, or is the white carpet your regular floor? i have a big rug that i bought for underneath the xpens that protect the real carpeting just in case. i would put the cage away and just start over with the xpen and a litterbox. having the cage also will really just take up unnecessary room in my opinion. for cleaning up pee, i have used a vinegar and water solution. you’d want to test it somewhere on your carpeting before using tho.

but better yet, like i said, you might want to get a bunny rug, at least during her training period.

edited:  in this pic you can see what i mean by having another rug down… with just one xpen you could probably get away with a smaller 5×7 rug.  this is also assuming that she does not eat carpeting.  if she ingests the fibers that can cause tummy trouble.

I’ll have carpet on top of a shower curtain for the x-pen.  But what about when she’s out of the pen? Does the vinegar/water leave a vinegar smell in the rug?  Thanks.
