› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Bunnies in the bedroom?
From reading other posts, it seems like a lot of people house their bunnies in their bedrooms. I’m just wondering why people choose to do this? I’m in no way trying to criticize – I just wouldn’t want to listen to my bun rummaging around and tossing her toys all night long while I’m trying to sleep! So I thought I’d check to see if there’s some reason why the bedroom might be a better location, or if it’s just a matter of personal preference. My bun lives in the family room because that’s where we spend most of our time.
there are several reasons why hammer is located in my bedroom. 1. its where i spend the most time 2. its the bunny proofed room lol 3. that was part of the agreement with my mom 4. there is nowhere else in my house lol lol
Im a heavy sleeper anyway but him being in my room means he gets a lot more playtime. He usually wont wake me up and if he does im out like a light in 20 seconds flat lol. So really the only problem is 50% of my room isnt mine lol. my bed, dresser and desk.. plus huge bun cage, huge rat cage, NIC gates to block off the desk and hamper, two storage units for all there stuff (one rat, one bun) and last but not least a bunny play area lol
oh and a dog bed!
It’s really the only safe place in my house for them, I can close it off completely when we are not here so the two house cats don’t harass them.
I don’t mind the noise, really. I sleep well enough for someone my age and it’s kind of nice to look up from my pillow and see Mimzy watching me from his shelf…my little bunny angel. ^_^
And well, SOMEONE has to be able to get my lazy butt up in the morning. ^_^ If these three can’t, then NO ONE can. xD
If we wind up adding on to this house, this will become their personal dwelling/play room. But until then, this is the best spot for them all. ![]()
I wish my buns were allowed in the bedroom-my Dave’s like you he doesn’t want to hear them while sleeping. I want them in there as I’d just feel closer to them if they slept in there -just goofy but I wish!
my bun is located in my bedroom becuase my parents are sort of anti-pet and think she is smelly, which she isn’t! and my brother is allergic to animal hair/fur.
however, i prefer it this way becuase while i’m doing my homework, or hanging out she runs free and i know i’m right in arms reach of her if she needs anything or gets into any trouble, and if she does something wrong i’m there to clap and say no so she learns its wrong.
and when i’m not home and she’s in her pen area clanging the cage into the wall and throwing her belongings everywhere, my door can be shut so no one else has to deal with her impatience before her mom gets home. ![]()
I remember this was discussed not long ago, and many of us admitted to doing what you do – giving the bunny (ies) their space in a different room. Lots of us can’t sleep with the nighttime noises, or the hay is too dusty for allergies, etc. I had mine in the room where I spent the most time – either livingroom area or TV/computer room, so I could spend most of my time awake at home with him. He also ran around of course, but I would shut my bedroom door so I didn’t have to be trying to fish him out from under the bed which was never easy. There are factors in both arrangements that decide your personal preference. It seems that the bunnies thrive in any of these set ups, as long as they get attention and a regular schedule with their human slaves.
i think that’s really the key. it’s better to have them right in the bedroom if that’s where you are. if you put them somewhere you never go, they won’t get enough interaction. also like was said, some people live in other people’s homes (minors or room-mates) so the bedroom is the only option. or there are other pets, so the bedroom is the best place for the bunny.
mine have their own room, it’s connected to my bedroom and i need to walk thru the bunny room to get to the rest of the house (yes, my house has a weird set-up!) i will close my bedroom door, and they don’t have a door, so they have open access to the rest of the house (except for my son’s bedroom). it works for us. they do get a bit loud in the morning, so i have to get up and close my door if it’s not already, and then it’s better. my house is so small, that no place is really “out of the way”, so they get a lot of attention. they have their toys, maze and litter in the bunny room so that’s where they spend the most time… but the living room and hallway is where they like to binky!
My rabbits would drive me nuts if they were in my room (not to mention I’d have no room for a bed for myself!!) Bindi feels early morning is the best time to do construction work on his cardboard box.
Coco lives in my bedroom – first because I wanted to socialize her ( she had been left alone in a basement with no real interaction) and I wanted to watch her closely. Plus, I work part time form home, so it is where I can be found at the laptop.
Now, it is the best rabbit proofed room ( although she continues to amaze me – just when I think I have it all covered…) AND it defines this room as HER room. The cat seems to accept that, so that it cool.
My husband was none too keen on a bunny living in the bedroom ( they had a bit of a stand off last night, as she was jumping up onto the bed and he was trying to fall asleep) but it has worked out well 0veralll.
She is free roam – but has not expressed any desire to explore the rest of the house. The house is all hardwood floors elsewhere [I have little carpets down for her in the bedroom] so that may be the barrier.
My bunny is free range so I don’t really have a choice when he sleeps on my bed lol. At around 9 pm he comes out from under the fouton and watches TV on the floor then about 10-15 minutes after I turn off the lights he’ll jump up on my bed, give me a nose nudge on my face and then he sleeps at the foot of the bed. He’s pretty quite at night and isn’t loud so I didn’t see a problem with him sleeping on the bed. When he has to go potty he always goes to his litter box so to me he acts like a dog or a cat =)
I tried leaving The Cotton Bun loose in my bedroom when hubby was away. At first it was great. Then getting him out from under the bed. So I removed the bedframe and solved that problem.
Then came the hair digging every 2 hours. I would have to bunch up my hair and stick a pillow over it. Then came peeing on my pillow. So I stopped having him with me when I was in the bedroom sleeping. Now the bedroom is off limits. My bed is way up in the air on bedframes. Without the bedframes my headboard and footboard wouldn’t stand up. He knows when I want him out from under that bed tho. Sometimes he will sneak thru and go under the bed. Then comes the long vacuum hose poking around and back to the living room he goes.
I like my buns in the living room and the other under the window in the kitchen/room spot. That way I can see them and give them attention.
Ruby was real happy when I took her out of the bathroom to where she is now. She likes it better there.
Uh ohhh I think I have gotten off subject a little. Uh ![]()
hahahaha thats so funny! you had to bunch up your hair & put a pillow over it :L:L i wouldnt have my rabbit out in the night allowed on my bed because i move around alot & am a light sleeper so i would be afraid of rolling over on her or sumthing!
Hm… *thinks about leaving Fiver out for a night, as MM needs a haircut*
I am picturing Cotton facing off under the bed with the vacuum hose…lolz….Oh BT, how mean you are to poor Cotton! j/k ^_^
Medusa lives exclusively in my bedroom and she loves it!
