› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Old cages for new bunnies
Just something I’ve been wondering for a while. If you have a cage that was formerly used by a bunny, and have a new bunny, will the new bunny be comfortable in a used cage? I assumed it would be OK since how else would shelters accept donations, but thought I’d ask what you all think before I actually am faced with the possibility and have a bunny who rejects a used cage.
Of course, I know it must be cleaned thoroughly. (Or just ask MM to stop by some night and spit on it…
)
*snort* MM… ew.
and why do you ask, is *someone* getting a new bunny?
you should be able to wipe it down with either a vinegar or bleach solution if it’s plastic. if it’s wood, i’d be more careful b/c of the possibility of it soaking in.
We we get a new bunny at the shelter we wash the old cage out with a 10% bleach solution (let it sit for 10 minutes) then rinse with plain water and let dry. That gets rid of any germs and any smells.
i would say its fine, just washed down with something like dettol so it doesnt smell but yeah should be fine, is there something you arent telling us?!?!!
And hahaha mimzmum LOL
He he he! Yes, we must never let her forget!
Shouldn’t think bun would be fussed bout 2nd hand cage. Any disapproval you pick up on is likely due to being in the cage itself!
Rabbitpam, your post does seem to be alluding to something…. maybe a foster??? It’s funny because this week I had wanted to ask you if you would ever get another bun but thought it might be hitting on sensitive issue. Hope this is not the case – so sorry if it is! ![]()
No, not yet.
I tried to be general because I’m really not alluding to getting a bun soon, but am trying to ask any questions now so I can know when the time comes.
I am frustrated and impatient beyond belief with waiting for the job now. I am still P/T at the job I like; they’ve said they want me full time Oct. 1 (counting the days????), but they haven’t made a direct offer or put it in writing. I would love what we’ve talked about, but they will wait until the last week of this month to let me know. I think patience is better than forcing the issue, but every time I make a mistake I have visions of $ being hacked off the salary offer. Or grant cuts make it fall through. It’s happened to me before, so I’ve been burned.
My old cage, along with the rest of my stuff, is in storage. Once I am back on my feet full-time, I will be able to move out of my folks’ house into an apartment again. I will then look for a bunny. Even my boss knows I want a bunny. My mother is afraid to come with me to look because she says she will fall in love with all of them and not be able to help me decide.
She can’t wait to see what a live baby looks like. It’ll be fun looking. (adopt, I know.)
When I unpack storage, I will have an old cage but new nic cubes ready to build, new toys, new litter pans, seagrass mattes, etc. I love my folks and we get along well, so they’re being patient also. They just want what’s best for me. During hurricane season I must admit that I am very relieved that I don’t have a bunny to worry about this year. By the time I get one the season will be over.
Bleach is OK? Thanks for the solution info. I know I scrubbed it in the tub before storage, but will want a thorough cleaning after I pull it out.
P.S. How do I join the Frankie Fan Club? LOL
keep us posted on if you get it or not!
I’m sure most books recommend bleach. Bleach is so strong smelling so if it were me, i’d rinse it off pretty well after and stick the cage out in the sun. The sun’s a great sanitiser!
If only you could march up to the Boss and demand “Make up your mind coz somebun is waiting for me!”
Best wishes for the job. hope it turns out well for you Rabbitpam.
I do see a pair of uppy ears in your future….no wait – 2 pairs?…hang on..really? OK then, they say thr……

Been tempted with the notion of 4 ears.
