› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › PLEASE HELP PLEASE – Runny Eyes…..
Hi All
Me & Gizmo are in desperate need of your help, advice and wisdom!!!
Gizmo is just over 18 months (I have had him since he was about 3 months). I went away for two weeks but I had my mum to go up to the house to bunny-sit. I came back yesterday and found that poor Gizmo has runny eyes. Mum didn’t notice so I don’t know how long he has had them for but it couldn’t be any longer than 2 weeks as he was fine when I left him. His right eye is worse than his left – his left doesn’t seem too bad.
The rest of him is okay, clear nose, ears, body and bottom. He is eating, drinking and pooping normal and he still runs the bunny 100 and his personality hasn’t changed (still craves food and attention). He has been moulting a lot for the past 4 to 6 weeks (maybe more).
The only thing that I can think off is that the weather here has been awful – cold and damp, very damp and I moved his cage to another spot in the living room which is right by the front door. Do you think he has caught a chill, if so how can I rectify this???
I will get some pictures of his eyes to post up this evening.
I would really appreciate any advice that you can give!!
Ruth ![]()
I would get him to a vet to have him checked over. Healing vibes your way.
Yes, make an appointment with your vet right away. Runny eyes have multiple causes, and are quite treatable when properly diagnosed. But it took a special light my vet used to diagnose a blocked duct (common cause) and give me the correct ointment to use to clear it up. You need to know to treat properly. It would be uncomfortable for him to go untreated.
Update:
Thank you to Presctchr and Rabbitpam for posting. It is a great comfort to me to know there are good people out there and that I can come here for help!!
Just to let you know that I have booked Gizmo an appointment for 4.20pm this afternoon – it is currently 1.15pm here in Swansea, UK. I am not too sure how rabbit savvy this vet is but it was the earliest appointment I could get him at the nearest Vet Surgery (5 – 10 minute drive away). Is there any key questions I should ask about his condition apart from telling the Vet what has happened and his currently status???
I hope that Gizmo doesn’t get too scared as he has never been to a Vet Surgery before, when booking the appointment I asked the receptionist if I could sit away from the other animals so as not to stress Gizmo, and she said that I could pop in to let them know Gizmo has arrived and we can wait in the car until they are ready. My other concern is that Gizmo is very independent – he does things in his own time so I hope that he is okay to be kept in his carrier for the duration and that he is okay being handled by a stranger. Is there anything that I can do to make him more settled/relaxed? I hate the doctors and I know what I am there for, poor Gizmo!
Sorry – I am ranting now (one stressed out Mum)!
I will keep you all posted – wish us luck & good healing vibes
Ruth x
Get the vet to check the teeth also because sometimes the molar roots can impinge on the tear ducts. You may be given something to treat the runny eyes but you probably will need to look around for a rabbit vet to look into the cause further. If the one you see today is not one, come back here and I’m sure other members here will be able to direct you to one. They have ways! ![]()
oh i’m glad you can get him in today! i would tell teh vet exactly what you told us. you were gone for two weeks, he was fine when you left, now his eyes are runny. make sure he checks the teeth also. is there any discharge from his nose too?
Oh yes that’s perfect, I was going to suggest going to the vets (best thing to do) but you’re already on your way. Please keep us posted on how it goes!! And Beka’s right, vet should check his teeth -weird as that sounds it can cause runny eyes
Hi All ![]()
Gizmo is back from HER adventure at the vets. Yes, I can now say 100% he is not a he but a she
we were never quite sure but we always called it a “him”. Good job she has a unisex name……
Vet was very rabbit savvy (all my praying ealier paid off)
He saw her eyes and without me even saying anything he looked straight in her mouth (I didn’t say anything at first as I really wanted to test him)…..
He said that Gizmo could have a bacterial eye infection so he had given her Fucithalmic eye drops. He also said that her back molars look overgrown (her front teeth are fine, she lets me check them occasionally when the mood suits her) so he asked what food I give her. I actually showed him what food I give her as I thought to take some with me to keep her calm. I feed her Burgess Supa Rabbit Excel Junior & Dwarf pellets. I also told him that I gave her unlimited access to hay & water and that I give her daily treats of fuit, veg & mint. He commented that what I gave her was fine and that the pellets are good and that they would normal keep her teeth down but because she is part lionhead they have a tendency to teeth abnormalities
and that the roots could be impinging (sp) on her tear ducts. He advised that I book her in to Surgery either next Monday or Tuesday for him to x-ray her to see what is happening with her skull etc and he will take it from there. He gave me the eye drops to use over the weekend to see if that helps clear things up aswell. I have booked her to go in Tuesday Morning.
Also, when he told me that he is a she we decided that we should get her spayed so after having a long discussion with the vet we came to the decision that it was best for her to have her spaying on Tuesday so she will only have to be sedated once. He had a ton of questions to ask at the Vet Centre and everyone I spoke to was rabbit savvy. He had actually done a rabbit spay that morning. I kept asking him questions that I have seen on here and rabbit.org to try and trip him up but he answered everything fine. Also, Gizmo hates anyone touching her back feet so he said that he will clip her back toe nails while she is sedated.
Therefore Tuesday morning at 9am she is having:
– Rabbit Spay
– X-ray: interpretation of first view
– Dental Burr Molars excl Ga
– Toe nail clipping
I just typed what was on the print out he gave me so not too sure what all the abbriviations mean……..
The vets also said that I will need to take her back in on the Wednesday afternoon to check that she is okay and then 10 days after that if everything is fine on her first follow up examination.
Once again A BIG THANKYOU to everyone.
As you can see I am alot calmer now – I was more nervious at the vets that Gizmo. Also, how come Gizmo behaved far better for the vet that she does at home. He was holding her and carried her into another room to be weighed and she was fine for all the examination and when he put her drops in. ![]()
I will keep you updated on her progress throughout.
Ruth x (& Gizmo)
He sounds like a great vet. I agree too about trimming the spurs and doing the spay at the same time. Molar problems can be a continuous problem too but with regular trimmings you and the vet can hopefully get them under control.
That all sounds very good. I like the idea of HER being sedated once. I was thinking her nails probably needed a trim while you were there.
Sorry her molars are a problem, but if taken care of early it’s usually able to be controlled.
I would suggest that you get the cost of all of this up front. You may find it is an expensive combo, and before you go into sticker shock next Tuesday, have an idea and possibly work out a payment plan with them. You may need to see if they will bill in installments and take credit cards. Don’t change your appointment, just plan for it.
They do seem to be little angels with the vets. I think it’s the heavy handed “I’m in charge don’t wiggle” way a vet works with them. Occasionally I had my bunny fly off the vet’s table and scurry around to the back of my neck under my hair. But not for long. ![]()
hi, im so glad everythings ok now youve got your antibiotics and talked 2 a vet!
but just incase anyone else wondered about runny eyes.. i was told by my vet that lops are often more prone to occasionally getting runny eyes for no worrying reason because their noses are more ‘pushed in’ than other breeds… just thought id try and be smart lol! – im probably wrong now!! hehehe

Thanks Rabbitpam. I have already had estimated breakdown billing so no shocks (hopefully):
Fucithalmic eye drops = £8.32 (already paid)
1 x spay rabbit = £47.00 (estimate)
1 x Dental burr molars excl ga = £15.00 (estimate)
1 x X-ray: Interpretation of first view = £30.00 (estimate)
So if everything goes to plan I will be looking to pay £92. 00 on Tuesday. All the above prices are including VAT (one of the joys of living in the UK
) Without VAT it was £78.30. I am not too sure how much her nail trimming will cost but nothing is too much for Gizmo
I don’t care the cost at least it saves me have to argue with her to get her nails trimmed
Also not too sure how much the follow up visits will cost (they need to see after 24 hours and then 10 days after to make sure everything has settled)…..
Also, if it is molar problem, which it more than likely is she will probably need to have this done regularly. Is it worth me getting pet insurance, would it work out cheaper? Anyone know of any good UK insurance companies that insure rabbits???
Ruth x
i’m sorry about the teeth problems, but how awesome that you found a savvy vet and i think it is wonderful that you’re going to go ahead and get everything taken care of ASAP! and what a shock, your sweet lil boy is really your sweet lil girl! lol! surprise! let us know how it goes…
That’s not such bad pricing! I’m estimating $2 US for every pound.
My lionhead Leo has chronic tooth issues. We get teeth trims about every 3-6 months. You will start to identify the precursors to teeth drama. My big one is dried drool on the chin. When he gets really bad, he gets the red/ drippy eyes. I have insurance on Leo, but they didn’t cover teeth b/c it was considered a pre-existing condition. He had to keep 6-8 months w/ no probs for it to be covered…needless to say we didn’t make it.
Keep us posted on how she does. Sounds like you found a good vet.
i’m so happy that you found a great rabbit vet! He sounds like a great vet, and very knowledgeable if he know about the lionheads have a tendency towards teeth issues. You did a great job dealing with your first bunny issue
It sounds like Gizmo is well on HER way to feeling much better very soon! Don’t worry too much about the spay and sedation, just make sure Gizmo has plenty to eat right up until the spay. I have brought about 10 bunnies to the vet for spays and they do very well with the surgery. The only tough part is getting them back to normal after the spay, sometimes it will take them about a day to start feeling better and eating veg and hay, so make sure to have Gizmo’s favorite vegetables and treats on hand for when she is recovering.
Good luck and let us know what the vet finds out about the molars!
update:
Gizmo had her appointment with the vets today. The spay went fine but it is bad bad news with her teeth……….
The vet showed me the x-rays and the roots of her molars on her bottom jaw had nearly ruptured to the otherside (both left and right), the upper roots are also really bad. The front teeth are fine. The vet filed the molars down and has given me some oral antibiotics to give her twice a day for a week but I have to take her back tomorrow as he wants to check how she is doing after her anaestetic and spay.
He says that I will have to take her to have her teeth checked every month to monitor the situation. Unfortunately I can not get insurance as it is an already established situation. I feel awful because how much suffering has she had to endure – she did not show any symptoms at all, she was running the bunny 1000, binkying just being herself (a complete goofball who loves cuddles). She did not have any symptoms that skunklionshow describes with Leo. She was fine when I left for holiday and her eyes were just watery when I got back (not red or puffy).
I have had her back for 90 minutes, she has flopped and she hasn’t eatten, drunk or pooped since she has got home but they said that she had some hay, carrot, mint and parsley that I left for her when she came round at the vets.
I feel a total useless bunny carer right now………….
It can be frustrating after you’ve seen a vet and done all you can at the moment, but are faced with taking some time to watch her heal. YOu are a good bunny mom and did the right thing. There’s no way to discern when a bunny has a big problem when they not only hide it, but zoom around and binky. As soon as you saw any indication of a problem, you went to have it taken care of.
She will be better for having the spay, and her recovery and rest will help her mouth as well. I’ll bet she’s a bit better now, just a few hours since your last post. Give her a day or two and watch for progress. Your vet sounds very good.
You are a great bunny carer! Paying attention to signs like runny eyes is very important, and not everyone knows to do this, so I think its great that you knew that it was an important situation as well as the fact that you found a rabbit savvy vet AND that you tested the vet to make sure he was really savvy AND you got the bunny to the vet right away
Every bunny should be so lucky as to have a owner like you! Its hard to watch your bunny recover, but keeping her as comfortable as possible is the best you can do. Tempt her with treats from time to time to see how she is feeling, but if she is not in the mood to eat anything that is very normal. If she does not drink any water, try to give her a bit from an eye dropper. Let us know how she is doing tonight or in the morning!
feel better Gizmo! keep us posted on her teeth.
and you are doing an excellent job, do not doubt yourself! (hugs!)
Yes you are NOT useless!! Useless would have been not taking her to the vet in the first place or dumping her at a shelter after hearing that news! You are an absolutely awesome momma!! Trust me, bad bunny moms don’t worry that they are bad!!!

Hi Everyone
Thanks for all the kind messages of support for Gizmo & Me. I have been tell Gizmo that everyone is rooting for her!!
Last night was rough – I felt terrible that there was nothing I could really do for her. I wanted to take away her pain but I couldn’t really. I did as per House Rabbit Handbook (I made her a bunny hotwater bottle with rice & a sock) incase she was cold, her ears were freezing so she could cuddle up to it if she felt like it.
When I got up I noticed that she has been to the toilet (both number 1 & 2) so I felt better but she still hadn’t eatten or drunk anything. So when I got into work I got a handful of mini syringes (I asked one of the Sisters on the wards in the Hosptial I work at). So at lunchtime I came home – I noticed she had eatten the slither of apple that I left for her and I managed to get her to have a couple of drops of water with a syringe I did try mushing up her pellets with some water and feeding it to her with one of the syringes but she was having none of it. I also cleaned her litter box before I left for work and it had been used again, which was a good sign that things were still moving. I did the same (semi-cleaned her litter box) at lunchtime so that I could see if she had used it in the afternoon.
Just as we tried loading her into her box to take her to the vet this eveing for her checkup she ate some of the pellets as if to say “please don’t take me there again I promise I will be good”. The vet looked at her wound and said that he was pleased with it (there are no stitches as it was all done internally) but when I told him about her not drinking at all and only now just eatting a few pellets he gave her a pain-relief injection and a pro-biotic injection. He also gave some power (bio-lapis) to put into her water bottle and I have to give her every hour via syringe. He also told us to get her some baby food and to give her that by syringe to hopefully encourage her to eat.
So off to the local Tesco’s we went and stocked up on Organic Apple & Blueberry, Apple & Raspberry and every other fruit assortment I could find (I wasnt sure which she would prefer, so I got them all). They only contain fruit puree (I checked that they were fruits that bunnys are allow) and ascorbic acid. I hope bunnies are allowe ascorbic acid as I couldnt find anything that didnt have it in.
Matt (my other half) had given her some water & some Apple & Blueberry mush – he seems to have the magic touch with her at the moment and I have just spotted her eatting some of her normal pellets and some carrot. Hopefully, the pain relief meds are working but I hope that she continues on this path. Matt has been wonderfully and is dutifully checking on her every couple of minutes and offering her both syringes (one mush & one water) to see if she wants either.
So far so good. The vet said that if things don’t improve to take her back tomorrow, but if she is getting better (eatting & drinking) he won’t have to see her until next week.
While we were at the vets I got him to give her her meds (eye drops & antibiotics) as she wanted to be left alone this morning……
We will have to keep an eye on her teeth. The vet with check her next week (both her teeth & her spay incision) and from what I remember yesterday (it was all a blur) we will have to take her back every month to review the situation.
Apologies to all for this long and rambling post but no-one else understand what I am going through at the moment and I hope that people on here would be able to offer me advice if there is anything I missed and hopefully someone can help me through her teeth problem (I still don’t understand how they could be so bad and yet I saw no symtoms, I must really be blind!!). I had to explain to work why I was finishing early yesterday and why I will be coming home for lunch this week and everyone goes “but it is only a rabbit”. SHE IS NOT ONLY A RABBIT SHE IS A FAMILY MEMBER!!!!
With love to you all
Ruth, Matt & Gizmo X
A very good food to give would be baby pumpkin food or baby carrot food, just so you aren’t giving too much sugar with the fruit. Ascorbic acid is vitamin C so thats fine for them
It’s not your fault for not seeing symptoms, rabbits hide symptoms!! They are prey animals and the sick/weak get picked off first, so they hide it!!
We definitely understand how your feeling
You’ve got masses of virtual shoulders to cry on here

I am very glad to be reading the details of her treatment and recovery. It sounds like things are going well and she is responding. It’s amazing what a difference pain meds make to them. I was on a regimen of daily syringe injections, vitamin spiked morning treats and teeth treatments all in the last year, so I know how much work it is for all of you. Spockie had very, very good teeth most of his life and then wham! Suddenly there was one growing skewed into his gum. It was pretty involved treatment until his teeth suddenly stopped growing due to his advanced age. You do what you can and they learn to take the treatments in stride. You know this I’m sure, but injections are easier when administered to the side of their mouths, rather than the front. Sort of slides in and they can chew/slurp in the back of their mouths when it comes at them from the left or the right.
{{{{{{{{{{{{Hugs & Healing Vibes}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
What a huge relief it is to hear that you have a rabbit savvy vet! Spays are always more difficult than neuters, so females need more healing time. You have done a wonderful job making sure she is taken care of as well as making sure to relayi what’s going on to your vet so he can treat accordingly. GOOD JOB!! I know it’s so hard to watch our animal companions dealing with such challenges, but she knows she’s not alone. And that’s a huge comfort.
Regarding her teeth. Rucy has had several surgeries which in total removed one of her front incisors, several molars and part of her jaw bone. She has to get her spurs (growths on the molars) checked to make sure they don’t cut into her cheek, every few months. Over time though, they have become less and less and so far she has only had to have them trimmed once this year if I am recalling correctly.
Because one side of her mouth has so many missing molars, she favors one side to eat. She only can eat softer hay like second cutting Timothy. She actually prefers the browner strands since they are the softest of all. She has a much harder time with stiffer hays – like 1st cut Timothy.
Also, with some greens that are thicker like dandelion greens, I usually tear them up into small pieces.
You usually find little tricks that work with bunnies who have teeth issues or are missing teeth.
Hi Everyone
Thanks for all your posts. It seems Gizmo is coming out of the worst of it (fingers & toes crossed). She has been eatting a little, she has been using her toilet but she has had poopy butt but I think it is my fault because I gave her some of the fruit puree but it was all that she would eat so I thought it would be better to give her some of that than her eat nothing at all. She still isn’t drinking from her water bottle but we are giving her water through the syringe and she is getting liquids from the veggies that she ate today. I am think that perhaps her teeth are sensitive and she doesn’t like the way the bottle feels on her teeth so I am going to get a new bottle and also try her with a small dish of water. Hopefully she will accept one of these??
Binky Bunny thank you for your very informative post but I have a question. How will I now what I offer Gizmo is Timothy Hay, espically if it is second cut. It sounds like bunny owners are better catered for in the US than here in the UK! I only have a Pets at Home store (I refuse to buy most of their toys & all of the treats, they really are not designed with bunnies in mind) and it only says Medow Hay on the packet but I have been buy Burgess Forage Mix as I can see it has danilions in it which she loves!! Is there any plans to have Binky Bunny store shipping to the UK – I would buy your store out!!
If you all don’t mind I would like to keep posting in here Gizmo’s progress. Moderators, please feel free to move the topic to another part of the site if you feel neccessary.
Ruth x
We don’t ship to the UK, but you should try thehayexperts.co.uk, they have many of the same things we sell, and more! They are UK based. The specific link to the Timothy hay is https://www.thehayexperts.co.uk/Hays%2C+Grasses+%252526+Herbs.4/Select+by+Hay+Type.130/Timothy+Hay.21/?osCsid=2m386039408aarqg3nn2pm5s83, but there are also other hays that they sell. You could contact them and let them you know you are looking for the softest hay they sell, and I bet they would recommend something.
You can also try BusyBunny.com, as they sell the soft 2nd cut Timothy Hay from American Pet Diner. Called Timothy Gold. That is the very soft stuff that Rucy eats. It’s not as high in fiber, but it’s better than nothing at all for her. You can also go to the American Pet Diner Website and see if they ship internationally. Both companies are U.S. based so I am sure shipping may be a bit pricey. But it’s worth checking out at least.
OH, and also, there are certain Orchards that are very soft. I just found that out that there are actually different types of Orchard hay. Unlike with Timothy, where Timothy is Timothy, there are actually different types of Orchard. We kept getting different textures until our supplier settled on a very soft green type. (can’t remember the name right now)
So you can also ask about the texture of Orchards from different stores.
OH MY GOD
Binky Bunny – I virtually bow down at your feet!!! How could I have missed the treasure trove that is The Hay Experts?! I have spoken with a wonderful woman there (I forgot to ask her name), had a lengthy chat to her about Gizmo and she was ubber informative and gave me some recommendations and she said that if I could get my order done online by 2pm, then telephone her to let her know when I have done it, she can get it through to the Couriers and I should have it tomorrow morning (which I have done). So hopefully Gizmo gets Christmas early tomorrow ![]()
The only problem is that I got a bit click happy on the website
Matt if you ever read this “I am sorry I maxed out the credit card, but think of Gizmo and that cute ‘ickle rabbit face, how could we ever say no to her?!”.
I dare anyone to go onto that site and not buy one item!
Once again, thank you Binky Bunny for giving me yet more wonderful information.
Gizmo, is still improving (touch wood so I don’t jinx it). She has been venturing out of her house and refusing to go back home until she is ready to, this is the Gizmo that we know and love. She has cottoned onto the routine of twice daily oral & eye meds, I have been giving her a little treat afterwards each time but she is still putting up a good fight ![]()
I will let you know what Gizmo thinks of her surprises when they arrive, hopefully they will encourage her to eat. I was recommended Oat, Wheat & Barley hay mix, The Taster Hay Selection Pack, Organic Mountain Hay (over 70 different types of vegetation in one bag), Dandelion and Plantain. I went on to order more stuff also so there must be something in there to her liking that she will eat! I also got her some Gnaw stones seeing as she loves to chew metal objects at the moment…..
Sorry, I am going to step away from the computer keyboard now as I am rambling again……..![]()
Ruth
Hehe awww Gizmo’s gonna get spoiled!! Hehe hope Matt doesn’t see this post
I’m off to check out that site and I just got paid !! hehe
I wonder if it was “Lisa” that you spoke with. Anyway, yes, that is a great resource! And I am so glad they were so helpful! I saw those sampler packs too and thought they would be great.
Can’t wait to hear how Gizmo takes to everything. Also, don’t be discouraged if a bunny snubs his nose up at some things first. Sometimes, what happens, is you think it’s been rejected, but leave there overnight and the next day it’s gone! Bunnies can be funny like that.
FYI – everyone I have added this discussion to the FAQ section under “Runny Eyes” in case you ever need to reference it.
Ruth, I am so glad that things are going so well, keep up the wonderful work! ![]()
Hi All,
Binky Bunny, yes it was Lisa I spoke to – she really knows her stuff! Unfortunately Gizmo still hasn’t had her presents yet. Lisa got it to the Couriers on time but the Couriers won’t deliver until Monday. Still that is nothing new for the postal service here in the UK
Good job I haven’t told Gizmo about her suprises otherwise she wouldn’t have been amused for the delay ![]()
Gizmo is well in herself. She is drinking from her water bottle fine now. Eatting all her greens (she adores broccolli at the moment), carrot, some pellets but I haven’t seen her eat much hay so as soon as The Parcel arrives on Monday I will try her on some new stuff. I agree with what you say Binky Bunny, Gizmo can be a right madame at times when I offer her something new, she actually does turn her back on it but give it to her another day and that is the best thing since sliced bread (don’t worry,I don’t give her actual bread!)
Just one question, can rabbit’s teeth get worse after surgery. The reason that I ask is that before I could check her front teeth no problem, they all aligned and they were not over grown. Now, I noticed (because we still have to give her oral meds) that her front teeth do not meet and the top pair I look curved, but in opposite directions. Could this be a result of all the work that they did in her mouth last week..I shall definately be raising this issue with the Vets when I take Gizmo back this week ![]()
Ruth, I am so glad that things are going so well, keep up the wonderful work! ![]()
I forgot to mention. Scarlet_Rose I can’t believe that you would want my rabblings to be on the FAQ section……….
Me & Matt are still trying to keep up the good work – much to Gizmo’s disappointment. We have worked out that she will sit quieter (but not much) if we put her on a side table to give her her meds. So as soon as she sees us get the table ready with her meds she goes and hides/strops in her house and refuses to budge but we persist and end up getting alot of Big Bunny Kicks when she gets back on the floor and The Look of Death!
All they did was just trim the spurs yes? Something like that should not affect the incisors. But it is definitely worth talking to the vet about.
What I suspect is happening is because rabbit teeth continually grow (think of how our nails grow), and how fast they grow can depend on nutrition, age, health and just genetics. Each rabbit is different, and not only that, my understanding is the incisors also can grow at different rates too. Now normally, this is not a big deal as rabbits just continue to wear down their teeth, but if you have a bunny that is beginning to exhibit teeth issues, malocclusions, then it will become even more apparent with time. So it just may be coincidental that you are seeing this after surgery.
Keep us updated though. Sounds like your vet is rabbit-savvy and I would be interested to know what s/he says.
i’m so happy Gizmo is dong well now! did you get the hay stuff yet, how is it?
Sorry for the lack of posting, I have been without a computer
Beka, yes, my hay items arrived on Monday. When I brought the box in Gizmo didn’t know what to look at first, she was so excited (as was I)! We are just waiting for a few more items to arrive that were out of stock but I would definitely recommend their services to anyone! Absolutely fantastic
We took Gizmo back to the vets last Wednesday for her check up. The vet looked at her tummy incision and he was happy with it but he said the area around it was a bit red as she had been overly grooming (he said this was normal in rabbits and that is why they do internal stitches so the rabbit can’t pull them out) so she now has to wear a kitten collar so we can attach what I can only describe as a l”lampshade” when she is being naughty and overly grooming. She loves to wear her kitten collar but we haven’t had to put the lampshade on her. I worried about putting it on as how will she be able to eat, drink and groom with it? So we have put off putting it on and she has been fine.
He looked in her mouth and said that he was happy with them but he explained that the problem was severe and that he doesn’t think she will live long beyond 2 (she will be 2 on 14.02.2009). He said that her left side was very bad and that they had a lot of problems trying to flush out the left tear duct. So we made another appointment for 4 weeks’ time.
Now for the worrying part:
Yesterday morning, when I went down to see her (she lives in the living room) I saw that her left eye was running again but no where near as bad as before and that her upper left lip looked slightly swollen compared to the right one. She is still fine in herself, eating everything and loving all the attention and she lets me have a feel of all her head. So, I have booked another emergency vet appointment for this afternoon. Do you think I am worrying too much? Is it too soon to have more tooth problems, she had them filed 2 weeks ago? I just don’t want Gizmo to be in any pain
Ruth x
You know I think you are right to take her back in; I’ve never had tooth probs (knock on wood) but I think two weeks is too soon to need them filed again. Keep us posted!!
It’s been a long time since an update.
Gizmo has been very Up and Down since Ruth’s last post
We’ve had many visits to the vet for spur trimming – unfortunately her teeth are in a very bad way
She refuses to eat hay or grass, she only eats foods that she can chew and not grind
She’s lost a few of her molars and we are now having to also have her Incisors trimmed
She has develloped absceces (sp?) on both sides of her lower jaw and now has a discharge from her nose
We’ve have been to see an exotic pet specialist, and the options put to us are:
Opening up her jaw, draining out the pus and removing damaged jaw bone and then repairing the bone with some form of cement and putting in place some beads with chemicals in them to help fight off infections
He also mentioned drilling into the roots of the teeth to kill them – but we are unsure if this was another option, or something that would be done at the same time as the beads
The only other option for Gizmo would sadly be to put her to sleep
We’re going for X-rays on wednesday and then with the info he can gain from them he’ll know for definite if the procedures are viable, but at this time we are unsure if it is fair on Gizmo to embark on this route
Anyone who has had similar procedures done on their rabbits please post your story here so we know what to expect and hopefully help us to make our decision
All the best
Ruth, Gizmo and Matt
Rucy struggled with that. She had one incisor removed, and many molars removed on once side of her mouth only, which allowed her to chew on the others. I haven’t heard drilling through the roots to kill them, because my understanding is that even a little bit of root left behind can become infected, as that is what happened in Rucy’s case.
Beads did seem to help Rucy with infection for the first couple of years. But then overtime, the bacteria seemed to be resistant. What the vet finally ended up doing is taking a bacteria culture from down deep when she was doing surgery, not just at the surface abscess. The results that came back were very helpful in determining why it was resistant to certain meds (there were about 5 different bacteria). The vet was going to start a treatment plan based the bacteria combination. Unfortunately Rucy passed away before we started due to unrelated issues.
– So I don’t know for sure if the treatment plan would have worked, but it was the first glimmer of hope of something finally working for her as Rucy had been through several surgeries over the years.
Note: she also had full use of her molars on one side and so she had no problem eating.(though we would have to get her spurs trimmed periodically)
Rucy also was a spunky girl who had really enjoyed life and it never seemed to get her down. If I felt she was suffering and her life was not good, I would have had to look at some painful options to bring her peace. Only you know what is best for Gizmo in regards to that.
I know this is not easy either way. Hopefully others who may be able to share their experiences with you too.
Wishing you the best. Keep us updated.
This morning Gizmo went for her assessment x-rays with the Specialist
We’ve been unable to really decide what is best for Gizmo, she seems a little down in herself – but then if you go into her room she seems to perk up
So we decided to get the x-rays done and make a more informed decision with them to look at
Unfortunaltey the specialist has said that her mouth is quite bad, that he would invisage about 5 major operations would be needed, and even then the outcome wasnt a guaranteed success
His professional opinion was that it would be too much for Gizmo to go through with little chance of success
So, we’ll be picking her up tonight, spending a few days with her and then taking her to her normal vet for the last time on saturday ![]()
Oh, I’m so sorry. You are doing what is best for Gizmo but I know it’s a hard decision to make and you have to think of Gizmo’s quality of life. Hugs to you.
I’m so very sorry.
I just can’t imagine how hard this will be. You and Ruth have done so much for Gizmo and this last step really is an act of love for her. My thoughts are with you all during this time. Be sure to celebrate the better times you’ve shared with Gizmo.
Sadly the day has come, we’ve been spoiling her rotten for the past couple of days
I think she guessed something was up and has spent a lot of time with us
We took her to the vet this morning, they sedated her, and then gave her the injection, we stayed with her all the way through, and then they left us with her for a little while to say our goodbyes
We decided to have her cremated, and keep her ashes in a nice box with her name on it
We’ve just got back, it seems strange – but it still feels like we’ll be picking her up from the vets later on, cant bring myself to put her stuff away
I’m just uploading some photos of her house and photos of her from the last couple of days
I’ll post them with some older photos of her in a bit
Again, you are both in my thoughts during this difficult time. Looking forward to seeing more pictures of your little girlbun.

Photos as promised – still cant believe she’s gone
This was Gizmo’s second house, before this she had the model down – this was the largest they did
For some reason she loved to go on top of it
Then Ruth told me what she wanted, and i built her this house
You’ll note that it wasnt on it’s base yet – Gizmo decided to move in before it was finished
and here are pics of our baby girl from yesterday and this morning before we went

oh, I am so very, very sorry to hear about Gizmo. It is so hard to provide that last act of mercy and kindness, but we do it for their sake. Gizmo knew she was a beloved bunny and you’re wonderful bunny slaves.Binky free Gizmo ((((hugs to you all))) Now I’m crying for your beautiful girl

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
I am so sorry to hear about Gizmo, she was such a beautiful bun! I cant imagine how hard things are for you right now. My heart goes out to you, and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. (((((((HUGS))))))) Binky free little Gizmo!
