Tucker had a few poops strung together last night and then again this morning.  It’s only like two or three together and she’s had lots of regular poops along with those.  I don’t know if this is maybe just some normal hair in the poop or if she needs the papaya or pineapple.  I mentioned to my  husband that we need to go buy a pineapple today for Tucker and he said “well we have pineapple in the cabinet” but canned pineapple is not good am I correct?

He then said “we have papaya tablets” and I told him that we didn’t because the dog got to both our oxbow tablets and the dried papya chunks that I had bought and she ate them ALL.  So he said “no the ones for us” so I went and got them.  They’re from GNC nature brand and they’re papaya enzyme dietary supplements.  They’re chewables…I wasn’t sure if this was something that I could give Tucker until I order some papya tablets from oxbow and get them in the mail.  I’d love to be able to give Tucker this atleast for now because our car is broken and Mike has to fix it this morning but it’d probably be later tonight before I was able to go get pineapple for her and I’d feel much better if I could give her something atleast for now.

Anyway, the human papaya enzyme has sucrose and dextrose so I’d imagine it’s not good to give much of but I was wondering if maybe just one would be ok and would help her poops until later tonight.  Or, if giving some canned pineapple or pineapple juice would be ok until I can get to the store tonight.

A few strung together poops here and there are OK, and if Tucker is still eating and having normal poops as well as the strung ones, then I think she will be fine until you are able to get to the store tonight. I have a couple bunnies that always have some strung together poops even though they get a papaya tablet every day. I’m not to sure myself about using the canned pineapple or the human supplement, but if you are unsure, then I think that Tucker will be OK until you can get to the store. Keep an eye on her to make sure she still continues to be eating every now and then and having normal poops – but otherwise she sounds like she’s doin OK!

Ok yea she’s definitely still eating, she ate some of her salad this morning and some hay and she’s had from what I can tell only two strands that were together and the rest of them all look normal.

I wouldn’t worry too much about a few poops like that. Bindi and Stormy get them occasionally, usually when they are shedding a bit. When I notice poops like that I make sure to groom them everyday for a while because they are obviously ingesting more hair than usual.

A great way to get off loose hair is to take a dish of water, wet your hands, shake off the excess and groom bunny with your hands, repeat until there is no fur coming off (be prepared for a severe disapproving bunny…). This gets all the hair off that would normally end up on their tongue.

Sometimes I see they’re strung by hay also, that hasn’t broken down so much in the gut. I think they can also ingest a bit of human hair unfortunately. Obviously your bun is able to pass some of it else you wouldn’t be seeing this ‘phenomenon’.

Read this, it tells you that hairballs actually do not occur because of eating too much hair. Read about the Hairball myth section.

I also liked this answer on yahoo. It seems beliveable and has good links.

Sorry, this info kind of disproves all of you who feed your bunnys paypaya tablets, but it is what I think because it all makes sence.

I mean if rabbits have lots of trouble passing hair then how did they survive in the wild?

I think they survived because of the surroundings.  Running through overgrowth, under bushes and down into dens would result in the branches and other things pulling the loose fur off of them.  In the house though, we keep anything that could snag their fur away from them.

Maryann used to have the pearl strings quite often until I began feeding her hay regularly.  Now it is a non-issue.

It is actually good to have the string of pearl poops because that means the ingested hair is being eliminated out of the system.

But, on the other hand, it doesn’t mean that it is a bad thing or building up in their system if there aren’t any.  Either way, if they’re poopin’ they’re good.

Yes, that is true too. Poopin is always good.

Pepe who had not pooped for 2 weeks finally pooped and he had lots of strings of pearls for about a week after he finally pooped. He did have a mass in his stomach and I was happy to have him poopin.

I would not give chewable papaya tablets for humans to a bunny- there is added sugar to make it taste good for humans.  In the Oxbow tablets there is only the natural sugar from the papaya itself.  If your bunny is not used to that much sugar it could cause diarrhea.  So I think you are better off not giving the human version- as it would be like giving papaya flavored CANDY.

Plus- as others have pointed out- it is common to see and it means that the fur is passing thru the bunnys system.
