I feel like a horrible mom. On occasion when its not too hot out i will take Pepper outside on his harness. He hates putting on the harness, he just kinda lays there and sprawls his legs out all different ways so its hard to get it on him. lol. But once the harness is on and hes outside he has an amazing time. He runs and binkies and eats grass, i have to run just to keep up with him!
Well i took him out yesterday to go outside, and i always keep him in the front yard just because its grassier than the back. (the back has a gravel parking area in it and a garage) Well when I took him out the guys across the street came out like ten minutes later and sat on their porch and were looking at me like i was som kind of crazy bunny lady
so i decided to go to the back for once. well in the back yard is a huge tree and im still carrying pepper so i can bring him to the back yard, an i am getting ready to set him down and pepper starts freaking out and clawing and hiding his face in my arm and i had no idea what was going on. then i hear this weird noise coming from the tree, i look up and a SQUIRREL of all things his making noises at my rabbit!!! i felt so bad he was so scared! i took him inside and put him in his pen and gave him a raisin. it took him awhile to calm down.
Has this happened to anyone else? are squirrels enemies with rabbits? lol!
El-Hrairah…Prince With A Thousand Enemies. Richard Adams, Watership Down.
Poor bun, wow I have no idea. I used to have my bunny go outdoors with me and we’ve got lots of squirrels…. They make those nasty chattering noises and I would guess they could startle a bunny, but it sounds like yours may have smelled the squirrel before hearing it, unless I’m reading your post wrong.
In the wild, squirrels are the lookouts. They usually see when something harmful is coming long before any other ground animal and perhaps that’s what’s going on here. Maybe your bun just felt there may be something dangerous around due to the noise the squirrel was making and thought he should flee?
i really want to read watership down. my vet recommended it, but i went to check it out from the library and it was already checked out.
Thats an interesting theory…maybe thats it. i just felt so bad! hes okay now though ![]()
Oh we don’t have squirrels here … but I do have a load of cats that live next door …
Poor Pepper … well at least he got his raisin.
Oh that makes sense, that they respond to the squirrel’s look out noise and that’s why he got scared.
yeah that sounds about right, i hate watership down its do depressing. Watch the movie if you dont wanna read the book.
lol i cheated, i watched the movie on youtube before i read the book. i guess the movie was okay (unless i watched the wrong movie, its a cartoon right?) …im hoping the book is better.
I have trouble getting through the book, because it’s written in a slow form of writing, very dry. But I loved the movie. When I first watched it years ago with my kids we had to turn it off by the time BigWig got caught in the snare. (I was very overprotective of them then.) But on the whole, it’s a great story. You just have to watch it with the understanding that it IS a story about nature. With a little anthropomorphism thrown in for effect.
I just loved the bird, Kehar. lolz…
I think Mimzy still wigs a bit when he hears a squirrel chattering outside the window. And we have ravens here, so when one of those goes by and caws, he hides under his shelf.
i havent watched it since i was like 6/7 and i was so upset by it i cried for weeks, havent watched it since, maybe if you guys reckon its a good movie i will watch it again now i have grown up.. well slightly
hehe
lol i thought it was an okay movie, i didnt understand the end though, did hazel live or die??? i was soo confused. I am hoping the book is more explanatory than what the movie could be. because movies are never as good as the books. which is why im afraid to watch the twilight movie as well.
yeah books are always better than the movie.
I haven’t seen the movie but I absolutely love the book. It’s full of fascinating characters. Bigwig by far is my favorite. A toughbun for sure.
BTW spoilers.
In the book Hazel dies but of old age. He meets the spirit of El-hairairah and travels with him to the afterlife, taking one last look at the down, now several generations old and thriving.
There’s a sequel called “Tales of Watership Down” which is a collection of shorter stories set during and after the first book. I’ve been meaning to read it, but it would be hard to live up to the original. I believe there’s also an animated series from around 2001 or so.
I cried too. I remember they were eating up a garden and the owner was mad and tried to remove them. I was going to check for it at the library too.
When I saw it I was little too. So hopefully us adults can watch it without too much trouble. I hope if it gets too sad I will have to turn it off. ![]()
i remember my grandad threw a teabag at a squirrel once (not on purpose we were having lunch in a field and there was no sink so he just through the tea bag into the bush and then he noticed a squirrel there) and the squirrel ran up to my grandad (about a foot away) and started squeaking at him! it didnt hit him it landed about a foot away from him but it was so comedy esk its was hilarious! my grandad is much more careful where he throws things now hehe
hahahaha thats hilarious K&D! the squirrels are usually very tame here, you can hand feed them…but for some reason they didnt like me or pepper or something! lol scared pepper to death!
It is also possible that you startled the squirrel – and he was complaining. I could see how the chatter might upset little Pepper.
I love Watership Down – I reread it (to my buns) a few months ago. In my opinion it is a lot about politics and religion.
I cried at the end – I just loved Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, Kehar and all of the other characters – I did not want it to be over.
i am going to get that book out i think and LOL @ read it too my buns haha
Fiver watched the movie with me the other day, and I play the soundtrack because I love the music so. I have a dvd and vhs of the original cartoom movie, but sadly the dvd is scratched and doesn’t play the intro properly. it’s good for getting screenshots though. ![]()
I have this one up above Fiver’s pen, it was already there when I brought him home, but hidden behind a bunch of stuffed animals, then when I was clening up to put his pen there-here was this wallpaper I’d made and it was so fitting!
It IS sad, but still a lot of good stories are sad. Have any of you seen Old Yeller? Now THERE’S a three-box-of-tissue movie! ;_;
I have the book, the sequel to the book and the sequels to the dvd, which I haven’t read or watched. I am also afraid it will spoil the original story for me, but I didn’t want the story to be over either. Can you imagine being one of Richard Adams’ children and hearing him tell it all the time for rides in the car and bedtime? What fun that must have been!
On the topic…lolz…here’s also a photo I took of a squirrel in Denali Park this summer. It was so tame it would almost come right up to you (since there’s open air restaurants right there, it must’ve gotten used to foraging under the tables) and either it was seriously fat or VERY pregnant!
