Ack!  Ok, there is distinct evidence that a bunny has been nibbling on my african violet leaves! Which of course involves hopping up onto the back of the couch, climbing onto a shelf, and then perching to nibble the leaves hanging down…. it actually looks like it happened a while ago- maybe a few days ago??? (It doesn’t really look like fresh nibbles taken out) Does anyone know anything about the safety of buns eating african violet leaves????? Both rabbits seem ok- no difference in eating or poops or activity in the last few days although I’ll definately be keeping an even closer eye on them now!

I was trying to find the list on rabbit.org but didn’t find it. Here is another website w/ poisonous plants listed for buns.

          http://www.adoptarabbit.com/articles/toxic.html

          African Violet is not listed…

That’s a good sign! And I just found a cat website that says its safe for cats “and other animals” so hopefully that includes rabbits! In the meantime I’ll be moving all of my houseplants even higher up! (I already have trouble reaching them to water! I could have sworn they were all out of bunny reach!!!!)

This might be a good website for people to have- it’s for the ASPCA Animal Poision Control Center- it has a list of toxic and nontoxic plants. It’s for all pets of course, not rabbits specifically, so I would err on the side of being cautious (I’m definately not going to add african violet leaves into the bunny salad tomorrow or anything!!!)

Best thing to do is keep an eye, make sure he’s eating and pooping and watch him.

The other thing you can do is call a poision control centre…And I know it sounds crazy but I watch a survior show and to be able to tell if someting is poisonos to us is to first touch it, then rub it on your lips, then touch your tongue to it….so if you can put it on your lips without a reaction chances are its not a big time poisonous plant. That doesn’t of course mean its bunny food but could put your mind to ease!!

This is from BB’s “LINKS” section:

                  Toxic Plants:

The first three links state that violet seeds are toxic look under “V” for violets so I would say the leaf is O.K., but like you said, I would not make a salad of it or anything for them.

They’re both still doing good! Luckily the leaves must not have tasted very good because there wasn’t too much missing!

Thank goodness for small favors, or icky tasting leaves.
