I have looked up on the net a few times to see what kind of breed my bunnies are. Mimzy is a Holland Lop Sooty Fawn, Fiver is a mini-rex, but Pip is a mystery.

She appears to have palomino coloring and build, and now I’m wondering if she has the genes to match?

She is a half-lionhead, mane only around the face.

She was a relatively good sized bun when we got her. But I’ve noticed recently she seemed to be getting heavier. (Much to Mimzy’s chagrin.) And now she seems much longer to me than when she came to us. I’ve been looking at her pix from back in December, and she definitely looks bigger.

The Palomino rabbit can weigh up to nine pounds. When we got Pip she was almost 5 lbs. and the doctor said she should stay that way. But now I am not so sure.

Could she just be overweight? Or could she be a breed that the standard weight is normally higher? What would be the best way to tell one way or the other?

I don’t want to underfeed her if she’s supposed to need more nourishment, but I also don’t want a buny that you can’t see where the legs attach to the body either! >.<

I already can see that the Superpet Pen she uses to sleep in is becoming too small and will have to rig up something else for her lodgings. And this pen is the biggest one they make! 0_0

        Any ideas?

*slaps forehead* Duh! >_< I should've thought to do that! lolz….

Well let’s see…. *looks through the plethora of photos of Pip on the comp* Here’s a few from when we first got her and the subsequent months following. I will have to load a new piccy of her at her current weight, but that’s only if she’ll cooperate with some snapshots today.

First one will be from December 07, when we brought her home. The rest will be a few months later and hopefully I can find that pic of the palomino that I found on the web for comparison.

I also have a pic of her and Mimzy together from March of this year. You can see that they almost look the same size and she should’ve been about a year old in that photo. You would’ve thought she’d stop growing. But now, she’s easily longer and heavier than she was in those pix, I’d say she’s a good couple of inches longer than Mimzy all stretched out.

The one of her in my lap shows how lengthy she is. I am about 5’4″ tall and she stretches from the top of my leg to my knee. That was taken in July this year.

Another thing I’ve noticed is the temperament change. Both she and Mimzy don’t seem as fond of each other as they were back in March. And I’ve decided to postpone any further bonding with them due to her weight and domineering attitude. You can see in the earlier pix she has an almost carefree air to her. But if you looked in her eyes today, all you’d see is Princess Bunny. She doesn’t take anything out on me, but she sure gives Mimzy a hard time.

As far as breed designation, she has the coloring, and if she gets all bunched up you can almost see the high back that you would find in a palomino bun.

Rather distressing to note this is apparently a breed that was sired for consumption. But it is also supposed to have a sweet disposition. Where that went, I have no idea.

I’ll add the other photos in the next post.

Here’s the picture I snapped of Pip today. What a little porker this one is! ^_^

Plus I added another pic of a palomino buck that I found on the web. Although I already put one up in the first post, I was thinking of this one when I began worrying about Pip’s weight.

yeah id say she is alittle on the tubby side im not sure what breed she is, but she seems to have lost that kinda curve u know between her front paws and her hind legs? so i would say she is carrying a little weight, although she doesnt look to be hugely obese and she certainly doesnt look to be having any troubles, it is a bit of a mystery, hopefully someone else might know abit more on her breed.

Keep in mind that the second picture in the first post is NOT Pip, but a palomino bunny picture I found on the web for comparison. Also the second picture in the second post is the palomino buck listed in Wikipedia as an example of the palomino body.

I’m not sure that Pip has ever been that ‘curvy’, but I do know it is harder for me to lift her now than it was before. I can still feel ribs, but her tummy seems tight to me. She still jumps around and goes up and down her night pen ramp, so I know it’s not gas.
I bought a bunch of wheat and oat hay for the two buns a while back and was feeding them that, (they wouldn’t touch the timothy for awhile), and I think that’s what got her so plump.
I have figured out a way to make the xpen into a configuration that makes it like a little racetrack. I figure if I really want her to move, I can put her in it and just follow her around with the furminator or the love glove, she hates being brushed so that’ll get her moving! ^_^
She is also back to eating timmy hay.
It’ll just kill me if she gets fat, I know how uncomfortable that is.

The shading looks absolutely palomino to me, I mean the coloring around the eyes and legs and tail match perfectly!! Maybe a palo-lionhead cross??

Pip looks a little hefty but I’d absolutely say not un-healthily so!! IMHO I think he’s a fine size I dont’ see a skirt or a dewlap so I think he’s fine

He doesn’t look overweight to me. Who knows what he could be crossed with – most of my rabbits I just consider rabbits because they aren’t a breed I can identify. His coloring may be Palomino colored though but if the Palomino is 9 pounds it’s unlikely that is what he is crossed with. I think I would just stick with calling him a Lionhead mix.

Okay, I will take it that you all believe she is not overweight (although I think she could still use more exercise) and I’ll just keep feeding her timothy hay and try to keep her pellet consumption in check. We’ll see what that does in a few months.
No she has no dewlap…yet…thank God! ^_^ And her fur has come back in from her last chin-chewing so nicely, she looks really fluffed out.

DO female buns have more weight issues than males? (The world would HAVE to be cruel that way…lolz.) We (me & my vet) do believe she is spayed, she has the tattoo in her right ear. I would guess like most females, she is going to get heavier as she gets older?

She just seems so large to me. I won’t mind her being her correct weight for her size and breed, but I have to think of Mimzy too. He gets crushed by her when she mounts him (and always from the front, she has no clue) and I know that was stressing him. He still is not sure that I’m not taking him out of his pen that I’m not putting him in with her, but sadly, until she is either a little lighter or he gets bigger (not likely) I just can’t in all good conscience put them in the xpen together because he comes out so unhappy it just tears me up.

a lionhead is 3.5 lbs at the most supposed to be and the palomino is what 9 lbs. She could be a mix of those 2 breeds. That would explain the color and the weight.

No matter she is still cute. A little hippy girl hehe with that hair.

Ooohhh…3.5? 0_o Okay, the only thing that’s lionhead about her then is the floofeh hair. >.<
That clears it up for me, bunnytowne, thanks!

And Pip says thank you for the groovy compliment. Right on and far out and all that…lolz.
