Maxwell, unlike somebunnies apparently, loooooves, I mean loves his timothy hay, he will sit and happily munch for 30 minutes to an hours after I refill his trough.

I know everything says unlimited hay but geez, one little bun is eatin like 3 troughs a day. Is this too much? He also eats all his pellets like immediatly so I’ve been splitting his 1/4 cup of pellets into two or three mini servings, same with his veggies which he also always finishes. He still always has room for the sprigs of parsley I give him as a “treat” for training (he has learned so quickly that going up on his hind legs means parsley treats that he comes to me and begs on his hind legs already, even if I dont say up) Little piggy bunny.

I want him to enjoy life and get all the nutrients he needs but I dont want him to get overweight. Any thoughts?

        In other general updates news:

Max has a neuter scheduled for Sept 10 so wish us luck on that.

Still poopin and peeing in his bed and the litter box, at least its not in the house but I am getting tired of laundering his bed every day.

Spent an hour last night making a cardboard fort for him and he never even looked at it, I even put some hay in the entrance, he totally ignored it. However he has created his own bun run with the floor length curtains which he zips behind often.

I’d say that as long as he’s eating his pellets and his greens then no, he can’t eat too much hay. I would be worried if he favored the hay over the greens though.

When I was pig sitting Teddy ate 3-4 troughs of hay by himself. So, by the time Patches got her hay I was filling that thing up to 5 times a day. Neither of them would eat the hay off the floor though, silly piggies.

No way!  Can’t eat too much hay.  Sounds perfect. That’s great he loves his hay!  Edson loves his too.  I am always refilling it too.

i just took layla for her first check up and the vet told me HAY HAY AND MORE HAY! lessen the pellets to an eighth of a cup day, and HAY. total and complete acces to hay. she said alfalfa isnt the best, and she reccomends the horse hay. also a cup of dark greens, mint leaves darker lettuces etc is a must. and every now an dthen a treat. when i have a peach or banana i always give layla a slice, and she loooooves it! maxwell sounds like my layla – not interested in bunny toys – but oh boy does she love zipping around the house!!! let us know ho wth eop goes – layla is scheduled for this week wednesday – i am sooooooooooo ridiculously nervous, but i trust our vet. (who is wonderful – if anyone needs a super vet in israel -just ask me!)

I’ll join the chorus here, as long as the hay is a good grass hay like timothy or orchard, the more the merrier.  For some bunnies hay is a “boredom buster” and when they are not otherwise occupied, they’ll just munch on the hay available to them.  It is very low calorie, high in fiber and good for their teeth as well.  This is a good thing!

                        Good Luck with the neutering!
I too made Atti a cardboard fort and he doesn’t go in it!
he eats the hay closest to the openings but he wont go in!
I do have toilet paper rolls with hay, so he eats from the outside of it!

For some overweight bunnies at the shelter, we don’t give them any pellets, just veg and hay, so its actually great that your bun prefers hay over the pellets! If he is eating his veg and hay, its a great diet for him. The hay is good for their teeth in addition to keeping their digestive system moving, so be glad that getting your bun to eat hay isn’t hard to do

Pip would eat hay like she was stuffing it into a wooden leg. Mimzy will hardly touch his. Fiver empties his bowl once or twice a day, but it’s not much.

As long as it’s timothy, and not a high calorie hay like wheat or oat, it is good if they eat a lot.
