I wanted to start feeding Fern Timothy pellots but she is only 4 and 1/2 months old.. Do you think it is too soon to start feeding her Timothy pellots? What age did your bunnies start being given timothy pellots, she gets timothy hay unlimited, no alfalfa hay, but alfalfa pellots and 1 leaf of romane a day. What do you think? The reason I am thinking if it now is that My alfalfa hay pellets are running out and I want to know if the new bag I buy of food will be alfalfa or timothy pellots. I want to keep some of the old pellots so i can slowly transition her food.

Also what age should I start limiting her pellots?

Another question that is kind of unrelated, what does it mean if your bunny goes through days that she eats a lot of hay and days that she eats hardly any or no hay? Her poop is fine and she is acting fine otherwise.

        Thanks!

I’d say around a year, unless she displays any diet related problems, like getting chunky or producing too many cecotropes.

A great diet page for growing bunnies is at http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html. A great way to see how things should progress. Also, be sure to go slowly when switching pellets and hay. Also, introduce one veggie at a time and wait a week before adding more.

Regarding off and on hay consumption. Jack is like that too. i think it may have to do with what is in the portion of hay that I give him that day. We think hay looks all the same, but if you watch carefully, some bunnies will pick through the hay a bit to find those extra yummy pieces. If you happen to give a handful of hay that day that has those ‘yummy” pieces in them, then they may consume more than other days. However, what is yummy for one rabbit may not be yummy for another, so i can’t tell you what yummy is to yours.

How long do your pellets usually last you? I was taking care of some about 4 month old bunnies a few months ago, and because I was running out of alfalfa pellets and couldn’t get some for a couple weeks, I mixed their alfalfa pellets with timothy pellets and found that they ate up both pretty quickly! Young bunnies need alfalfa pellets because they are growing quickly and need the extra calories that alfalfa provides, so if you begin to switch to timothy pellets, you may want to consider providing some alfalfa hay in addition to the normal hay that you use to provide some extra calories for your growing bun.

I have found my bunny’s hay consumption definitely can vary from day to day, I think it is pretty normal and OK as long as your bunny is continuing to poop normally, and at least eat SOME hay during the day.

My experience with switching babies to timothy pellets was that the switch was really easy, they gobbled them just the same as the alfalfa.  You can mix the new pellets in with the old for a few weeks to get them used to eating the new pellets.  Switching them from alfalfa hay to grass hay is harder, they really love the alfalfa and sometimes resist the grass hays at first.  You just need to be persistent, they’ll figure it out eventually.

whatever you decide, do it somewhat gradually. i did not do alfalfa (pellets or hay) at all with Meadow and she is fine and a good adult weight. the general suggested age is 7 months, but i think anytime between now and a year should be okay.
