SO…two weeks ago I decided it was time to litter train my bun.  I went to the local pet store and purchased one of those corner litter boxes, a very simple one, for $18.99.  I needed one and it was the cheapest one there, so it worked.

Today, I went to the same pet store to get some kitten toys (we got two kittens from a friend who needed to find homes for an accidental litter) and I noticed that those round toys with the ball on the track that also has cardboard in the middle for them to scratch was $30! Compared to $10.99 at Petsmart online!  I mentioned it to the woman and she was like “well, you’ll just have to go there then because we cannot afford to sell them that cheap!”  This is the same pet store, by the way, who had the two bunnies for sale for $240 each [if you’ve read my post about that].

I decided on my way back to work, I’d stop at my local Tractor Supply Co..  While browsing the small animals section, I noticed that they had the SAME LITTER BOX that I got for my bunny ($18.99) for only $3.00!!!

Does anyone else notice that their local pet stores are much higher priced than other stores?  I don’t mind supporting local business, but jee whiz, when I can go to Wal-Mart or TSC or another chain department store for the same EXACT thing and its 1/3 or even 1/4 of the cost, I’m going to be saving my pennies!

It’s probably that the small business owner pet store doesn’t buy things on nearly the same scale as the bigger stores.  Therefore they don’t get the discount prices and need to sell for a higher price to make a profit.  They also probably don’t sell nearly as much stuff and therefor jack the prices up on stuff to stay afloat.

The price for the corner litter box does sound high at 18.99 but then again 3.00 also sounds insanely cheap.  Petsmart by me sells them for I think I dunno between 10-15 and the local pet store I think has them maybe…15-18 bucks.  I just got plain old cat litter boxes though because I have a hard time spending more then 5 bucks in something that is pooped in   And now I have the bottom to my bun’s old pet store cage as his litter box which works awesome.

I too am all for supporting local business but with the economy as it is and gas prices and everything as it is I have to look out for my family’s budget first.  I go for the cheaper priced stores more often then not.  Especially when it’s the SAME item!

Yes my local pet store is insanley expensive!! A little harness for my ferret that I could get 9.99 elsewhere is 18.99 there. I had the price matched, but took them 30 minutes to say that I wasn’t lying and that yes they would lower it for me. Also a cage that I could get $30 somewhere cost
            $87.59 there!!!!!

Definitely watch and compare prices-and if you can get it at walmart (although I have ethical reasons for not wanting to go there…) get it-its by far super cheap!! I got a cat covered litter box there for under twenty and the cheapest in petstores starts at sixty (that I’ve seen).

And the woman at the pet store was NOT that friendly about it either – she needs better customer service skills!  To tell your customer to go to Petsmart instead in a snotty voice is not going to encourage me to bring them my business!

Doesn’t sound like the lady was very nice about it, I don’t mind paying a little more to support
small business owners especially local ones but jacking up the prices that much is a bit insane.

As an animal lover, you should try to support pet-selling stores as little as possible. I support my local pet food store who supports shelter animals. I buy all my rabbit supplies from them and will gladly pay a few bucks more if I need to, to keep my money away from supporting petstores who get animals from puppy/kitty/bunny mills.

Yeah, I got a huge litter box from Walmart that my buns can lay down in and still have room to shove their hay around for $6. I hate the decline of local small towns and the Walmartization of the world, but seriously…$19 for a plastic bin that bunny will probably miss because it’s too small? Seriously…

BTW, I’ve heard rumor you can get essentially a big litter-box from Home Depot for cheap, that’s intended to be a cement mixer. I hate talking to people at Home Depot, so I went to Walmart, but that’s another solution…

Michael07 – my bun lays in her litter box all the time.  She just hangs out in there and munches on hay.  She actually prefers to lounge in there over other lounging areas of her hutch.

Not unusual at all for rabbits to lounge around their litterboxes, from what I’ve seen. Michael you’re lucky for having a well-stocked petsmart near you, the one that was near us had almost nothing in the way of rabbit items except the junk food stuff that’s really bad for them and hay that was outrageously expensive. They had more stuff for gerbils than they had for rabbits.

Around here my petsmart is the most non pet selling place around.  Besides mice, hamsters, fish, reptiles and birds.    If they have cats it’s adoptions and they only have dogs on adoption Saturdays.  Occasionally they have a guinea pig or two but I believe those actually come from “oops” litters if anything because there’s usually just one or two there..and they have a HUGE cage…they have the corner ones that are usually for the larger birds..so they’re doing well in there

My local pet store has animals in little tiny wood boxes and they sell dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, fish, reptiles, and stuff in that store too and all their tanks/cages are always so tiny

Petsmart was the only place I could get those litterboxes with the wire rack on top of it. To keep Ruby’s white hair white. Otherwise she lays in her pee. So yes I paid about No I think 8-12 .00 for it. The Petsmart here is big. And don’t have buns. Just lots n lots of bun stuff.

I have notice Walmart a bit cheaper on the hay but they don’t carry any but timmmy and alfalfa hay. When I want a diff hay for  variety I go by petsupermarket across the street. They have Zupreem timmy pellets there.  And the bad kinds too.

So do your cages have wire bottoms Michael07? If they are how do you keep them from getting sore hocks? And how do you manage out of cage play time with so many?

i try and avoid buying anything bunny related from a store which sells animals, i get my pellets and hay from one which works with shelters (for dogs and cats though not rabbits) but they dont have rabbits there so thats good. i think thats way over priced, a litterbox here is like 3.99 for the corner ones.

I know that wire bottoms are convenient for cleaning, especially when housing a large number of rabbits. But there are some drawbacks,

Accroding to the House Rabbit Society (http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/housing.html)
Rabbits were not designed to live on wire floors–they’re hard on their feet (which have no pads on the, like cats or dogs). If you must use a cage with a wire floor, you need to provide your rabbit with a resting board or rug for her to sit on, otherwise she will spend all of her time in her litterbox.
You can find cages with slatted plastic floors, which are more comfortable, or you can use a solid floor. As long as your rabbit has a litterbox in the corner that he chooses as his bathroom, there shouldn’t be much of a mess to clean up.

So litter training may be a good idea, as it would give them somewhere to get off the wires. Check out the litterbox training guide on this site, it’s excellent

Be careful when cutting corners on bun food. I was buying some at walmart for a short time and it turned out to be bad for her. Check the percentages, especially fiber. I forget the exact amount that deems it “healthy.”

Litterboxes, however are just plastic So shop around! I had never heard about the litterbox with the metal grate in it until today, so I might consider that for both my buns white paws!
