The rabbit-hunt in the park was successful!
Meet Robby the Rabbit, formerly a resident of Recreation Park in Long Beach…now a resident of my laundry room! (Where there may not be as many nice breezes, but there’s also not homeless drug addicts, screaming children, barking dogs, or skunks! Although, who knows? Robby may miss his former roommates the skunks..)
I’m supposed to be going to work, but couldn’t wait to show you all…
This is Robby’s very first lounge in his new home:

This is his very first puffed-up mildly disapproving stare:

And this is his inauspicious new home, but it was the best I could do post-allnighter with 30 minutes to shop in between trying to do my job, trying to catch a wild beastie, and trying to get him to his vet appointment! I’m hoping he and Lizzy will be friends someday, and they can share her much lovelier house, but for now, here’s Robby’s new home:

This is all my own fault, in case anyone cares. I was the one who told my friend at the rescue when I was first looking for a bunny, “my dream bunny would be that greyish-brown, with the white around the eyes, you know like a wild rabbit just hopped in off the fields and into my living room!” And of course, I happily ended up with my fanged-marshmallow Lizzy. But when you put something like that out to the universe, sometimes it comes true…
![]()
Ooohhh congrats! That was really great work!
My dream bunny was solid black with the white outline around the eyes…and then I saw Digger.
I too am dangerously close to being a bunny collector. I just can’t stand to see them without happy homes.
Just make sure to keep Robby and LIzy seperated until after the vet appointment. Bring some ‘fresh poos’ of his in a plastic bag (about a dozen or so) so that they can do a test for the nasty thing that I can never spell.
I’m glad you did this for Robby!! this is SOOO great of you! I hope he gets a clean bill of health!!
he looks kind of like a wild bunny, don’t he? I like his setup…and the phonebook…haha ![]()
Aw!!! He reminds me SO much of my Binkles!! God rest her soul..
I’m very happy for Robbie. This is very exciting news!
Wow, you rock. This is amazing that you caught him and brought him home. He is quite a lucky bunny!
I’ll try to help out Marcus here, it’s called Coccidia
, and most bunnies that are “set free” get it. It is simple to cure with a course of antibiotics. The vet will either do a fecal test (make sure the poops are fresh, less than 12 hours old), or simply treat him without the test. Most bunnies coming in from the outside also have fleas and/or mites, which can pretty easily travel in the house to get to the other buns. Please make sure you wash your hands well each time you handle him or his litter box, and make sure your clothing does not carry hitch hikers.
What a great story. Please keep us updated!
Lightchick, he is beautiful! Great job, hope he gets a clean bill of health. My first impromptu bunny cage was chicken wire untangled from my garden in the dark, wrapped around a cardboard base. Yours is club med in comparison.
“Fanged Marshmallow” LOL
good job! he is gorgeous – is it for sure a he? how long did it take u to catch him? cant wait to see more pics!
awww… what a sweet story! i’m so glad robby has a new home with you. it sure does sound like he wanted to be caught ![]()
Yay! How sweet of you to take home this homeless bun
He doesn’t seem to mind the cage – he looks incredibly satisfied actually, like he’s saying that someone FINALLY realized that he is to posh to live outdoors with the skunks! He’s quite cute – I’m so glad you were able to catch him.
He already has dissaproving bun down. He also has His Majesty King of the Xpen down pat too. I am sure he is very happy with his new set up. A home A home all my own. ![]()
What a story! You should write a children’s book about this!!! He has such beautiful eyes!! Bunny hugs to you and Robby the Rabbit!!!
Aww, thanks all!
Thanks Markus & Osprey…I’ll be sure to specifically ask if the fecal test includes a test for that…Cocci-whosy-whatsit..(I’ll write it down before I go!) (I took Robbie to the vet yesterday, but didn’t have the fecal sample, so I have to take that in when I get it.)
Of course, Robbie has to poop first, which he hasn’t yet. Or pee’d. I’m about to be nervous. He’s been eating his cecals, and devouring his lettuce and hay…probably he’s just shy? Also, he doesn’t like his litter box (or pellets…probably has never had either!). He hopped in it once yesterday, but hasn’t gone near it since. Which was ok yesterday, because he had the carrier full of litter and hay. But I took the carrier away this morning and replaced it with a cardboard box so that the ltter box would be more obvious…but since he hasn’t gone near it, he hasn’t been eating hay for the past few hours. Hoping he’ll give in soon…
The blood test came back good.
Lizzy is going to be a nightmare. She can’t see him from the living room…can’t even see that room…but she sits as close to that hallway as she can get and STARES! And glares at me, like I’ve been cheating on her, or something. And she’s being as Destructo-Bunny as she can, throwing temper tantrums… I wash my hands EVERY TIME I come out of Robbie’s room, but apparently I didn’t do it good enough last night. I got down on the floor and was petting Lizzy with both hands…she would turn to my left hand and lick me, then turn to my right hand and growl! Dr Jekyll and Miss Hyde! (It was sort of sad…she hasn’t growled at me in a while…sigh.)
Robbie’s settling in ok. He lets me pet him without complaint, but I don’t push it too much. He has done the ears-laid-back nasty-look a couple of times, but hasn’t gone so far as to pounce or growl. I hope he won’t…I got enough of that with Lizzy!
I gave he and Lizzy both the flea treatment to be safe yesterday. According to the vet it should have killed them all within a few hours…although I’m paranoid and hate bugs, so now I’ve got that creepy-crawly invisible-bug-all-over feeling!
I’m sure I’ll be on whining with more questions soon!
Maryann held in her poops for two days after she came home with me. I was also a bit worried and then she hopped over to one of the two litter boxes I had and left a pile about a third of her size. I would say that it is just nerves for him right now. Of course, if he is still this way (as I see your post was a day old), I would think about taking him in on Sunday morningish.
What a wonderful kind thing you did for that poor bun. Pat on the back for you.
maybe they dont want anyoen to know they are there so they dont leave their mark? Anyway glad its not going to badly, sorry about lizzy but dont worry she will come round! Any plans for bonding?
Keep us updated, cant wait to hear this adventure unfold!
I haven’t checked in for few days but I see a bit has been happening! Congrats on the rescue Lightchick! That a beautiful looking bunny – no way is it wild/ a definate dump case or escapee! Glad he’ll be getting the life he was supposed to have.
I’m really impressed with this story and your kind heart. It’s inspiring to know that there are still kind souls out there. I couldn’t even imagine just dumping my pet (cat, dog, bunny, bird whatever) out in the wild. It’s pretty easy to take it to a shelter. I just don’t get it. Makes me sad that people think of animals as disposable creatures.
Aw…he’s so cute. So glad things worked out!
hows things going today/
I’m curious how Robby is… is he getting more comfy now? He’s so cute!
This is in NO MEANS coming to the defense of people who just dump animals! But I think that sometimes people think that because they see similar animals running around in the wild that it means that they’ll be able to adapt, which we know just isn’t true. And for some people it might be a matter of finances – for instance the Humane Society in Edmonton charges a fee for admitting owner surrendered pets (min $30 for rabbits, up to $160 for some animals) . It’s not an excuse, if they have an animal they can’t take care of anymore they should put some effort into finding some place that can take it, but in some cases it may not be as easy as just surrendering the animal.
I hate it when people just dump bunnies though. I saw one the other day when I was running errands that had been hit by a car (didn’t survive) – it was obviously not a wild bunny because it was black and white and reminded me a lot of our Tegan. Made me sad to think that someone had possibly just let it out to fend for itself and this is what happened.

Look who figured out what his litter box is, and how to use it!

Hi, everybody! Thanks so much for worrying about Robbie!
He’s doing well, I think! As you can see, he’s braved the litter box! And I may be the luckiest human in the world, because as of now, it’s the ONLY place he’s done his business! Yay for the tamest wild rabbit ever!
So now I have a “sample” to take to the vet, to make sure he doesn’t have any weird disease to pass on to Lizzy. Even so, I’m not going to let them meet for a while. I have to get him neutered, then give him a month to settle down, and by then work will be insane… I definitely want to try to bond them, but I might not have enough time to devote to it until December, really. Also, I just got into a really good place with Lizzy, who now magically adores me, and follows me from room to room and doesn’t pounce at me at all. I really dread my sweet princess turning back to Demon-Diva-From-Hell. And I want to get to know Robbie and bond with him myself, first, as well. Although, I may try sooner just because I have enough time to let one bunny run rampant for 4 hours a day, but not enough for 2 separate playtimes that long… It’s a quandary.
I’ve been hand-feeding him his lettuce to get him used to the idea that hands are good and not to run from or attack. Seems to be going ok. After he finishes his lettuce, he sits there and lets me pet him for 20 minutes or so (until my legs fall asleep from crouching in the 2 square inches of space left in the laundry room outside of the bunny-pen!). Then when I stand up and stop petting him, he shakes himself off and stretches and hops to the other side of the pen.
Seriously, tamest wild-thing ever! Of course, he’s still not seeking me out or binkying or looking totally comfortable, but he’s definitely not as skittish and antisocial as I would have expected. I wonder how long he’d been in that park… Or what his story was before then… It’s all a mystery. But he’s going to be a sweetie, I think, so I’m glad I have him!
Ruffles, thank you so much for the kind words! I don’t know how nice I am really…just easily guilt-tripped by a well-timed binky! I think he was playing me the whole time!

I just wish people would take the time to do the research BEFORE they get pets, so they understand the work and effort and time involved ahead of time… Especially with “exotics” like rabbits… Not that I think most people who have dogs know anything about really caring for them, either, but there’s more information out there when they get confused. There’s no “Bunny Whisperer” for people who buy their 5-year-olds Easter Bunnies, and then wonder why Mr Cuddles bites little Timmy (probably little Timmy is unsupervised and deserved it, but whatever). Or “It’s Me of the Bunny” on TV (have you all seen that show on Animal Planet, btw?! “It’s Me or the Dog”? Dogs behaving VERY BADLY! Cracks me up!).
I don’t know why complete ignorance on a subject translates to, “that must be easy.”
I am so glad you found him. He is super cute! Now he has a second chance to live a happy lifestyle! Go You! lol
Isn’t it funny how ferals seem to be the best with cage habits? From Day 1, Maryann has never left a poo or pee anywhere else other than her litterbox. The only two exceptions is when one gets stuck on her bum and she hops out with it, the other is when I haven’t changed the litter box soon enough for her. She doesn’t poo outside of it but she does shovel all the BB’s out of it in order to make room for herself.
She has gone as long as 6 hours without going to the bathroom, simply waiting until she could get into a litterbox.
Now Dono on the other hand… If he’s eating, he’s too busy to seek out a litter box.
lolz, Markus. Wow, that was what I was afraid of with Mimzy, that he’d never learn to use his, but he took to it like a champ. He was a dump, as many of you know, and I just couldn’t understand how anyone could to that…(damn the finances, find your pet a HOME if you can’t care for it…don’t just expect other people to do your job for you!)
Now Mimz uses only one half of the box. When it fills, if I haven’t cleaned or turned it yet, he will wait. Likewise if we are having cuddle time, he shows me he needs to go and the session must end by digging on the bedclothes. Quite the smart little bun, if I do say so myself.
It took Pip a while to catch on. She’d lived in that filthy snake tank at Petco for about 6 months and figured, ‘the floor is where X marks the spot.’ But once she finally made the connection, well it was a day to celebrate. ^_^
Bravo Robbie! That’s no wild bunny. And I am so glad too that he’s not living with the skunks anymore. I didn’t want to say so before, but I know skunks sometimes kill other small animals to eat, or just because they’ve crossed their turf. But you probably knew that. I’m just glad Robbie is safe now.
oh no i didnt know skunks would do that
poor robbie!
WOOT WOOT!! ![]()
CONGRATULATIONS!!
I for one am soooooo happy you brought the little guy home and ecstatic that it’s working out so well ![]()
![]()
That’s great news! Seriously made my day
![]()
Congratulations! He’s gorgeous. Reminds me of my rabbit Pepe.
Wow, he seems more tame even than my guys!!!!
I didn’t know that about skunks…they seemed to get along okay… I never actually saw Robbie with the skunks, but they all definitely emerged from the same hole in the ground…
Mimzmum, I didn’t know Mimzy was a dump. What does that mean? Where did you get him from? Poor guy!
Markus, good to hear I didn’t just get lucky with they automatic litter-box-training! I was afraid it was a fluke, but yeah, he seems to just use the litter box! I’m way too lucky… And Robbie let me pet him for like 30 minutes today, and looked SOOO happy, getting progressively more sprawled as I pet him! He’s not hand-shy at all, really. I wonder if he was an escapee, rather than abandoned. He seems way to happy to be pet to have been dumped off as an unwanted neglected kit…
Mimzy and two ruby eyed white bucks were dropped off in front of my hubby’s place of business. Some dumb person just thought they’d all manage in the wild. So that’s what I mean by a dump.
But he’s turned out to be such a love-button for all that. ^_^ Sadly we weren’t able to personally rescue the other bunnies, but one did find a home with someone out here. The third one I don’t think made it, it was real close to winter and by the time we could get some traps together he was gone. ![]()
Oh, MM, so sad… ![]()
I’m glad you’ve got Mimzy…and Pip and Fiver…
Dumping another creature is just another form of denial…”what I don’t see must be fine”. There’s lots of that out there. How else could BF and I have stolen Thumper and Flower with so little fight? Bought for $20 with little thought, let go with little thought…
My BF’s and my 2 year anniversary is tomorrow (Tuesday). He wants to know what to get me. The fact that he has 2 bunnies he never planned on, and supports me in catching park-bunnies is more than enough. Most people suck, because they aren’t educated to FEEL for other creatures. And some people are fantastic, because they do feel for others.
I’m so glad you got Fiver. I’m sure he’ll be a love-bunny soon!

He already is, Lightchick. Believe me. He’s coming around so quickly that it still amazes me that these poor little creatures, so afraid of what might be out there in the big, wide world, will still find the room in their hearts for a human being when so many may have mistreated them before.
He did binkies on the bed again this morning and nestled so sweetly in my arms at the vet’s today. I love giving the same time and attention to Mim & Pip, but somehow this little guy for his tiny stature shows so much more gratitude, it’s just beautiful!
I look forward to your first binky post about Robby!
And yes, your bf sounds like a keeper! ^_^
Lightchick -did I just detect your saying that you stole Thumper and Flower from a pet shop? =P If so, you are my hero. I’ve always wanted to do that, but I’ve never managed the courage to..(or have the facilities to house the extra bunnies.)
Binkles – I think she ‘stole’ them from her quasi-mother-in-law’s place! lol Sorry to burst your Super Bunny Saver Hero fantasy bubble but she still warrants the title don’t you think?
Lightchick – congrats on the anniversary. And i think you’ve hit nail on the head re ‘the uneducated’. I think that’s what it is too. People really think they’re setting them free. Maybe they think they’re doing them a favour because they can’t look after them properly and feel cruel leaving a bunny penned up so they ‘release’ them. Gosh, even rehabilitated native fauna needs to be released with care because they become dependant during care and are more vulnerable on release – as I’m sure you’re aware!
Oh he he! After reading of Skunks and Robby looking like Pepe I just remembered that Skunk character “Pepe Le Pew”
My Pepper was a park-bunny too, and she has always had awesome litter habits.
She’ll never be a snuggle-bun, but I’m okay with that.
Come to think of it, Ruffles was dumped. He was found hopping around outside and someone took him in and brought him to a rescue. He’s a great bunny, I’m not sure why someone would let him go, unless of course, he escaped which I doubt. But who knows? People, for the most part, do suck and when it comes to pets. Heck, a lot of them suck when it comes to their own kids!
My little Deanna was a park bunny, and DJ was dumped at a self service storage place. Deanna lost an eye because something attacked her in the park, DJ was lucky and the shelter advocate from one of our shelters caught him and his sister before they got hurt.
Just wondering how Robbie’s doing?? Any new pics of the cutie??
Yeah Lightchick, don’t leave us in the lurch – we want more! ![]()
eeeeeeek!!!!!!!!
i missed this! he is precious Lightchick! how is this working with your boyfriend, ar you taking them both with you on weekends?
Hi, guys!
Thanks, Beka! I think he’s pretty precious too!
Sorry you’ve had no updates from me lately…I’m actually out of town for work right now…left 3 days ago, won’t be back for another 6. It’s been hectic!
When I first took a tour of the theatre, I noticed an empty cage…asked, “is that a BUNNY cage?” And was told yes, they had two rabbits in a show a while back, and the marketing director adopted them after the show closed, but they’re sort of the theatre mascots, and come to work to visit occassionally. I was told they hadn’t been there in a while, and everybody missed them. I said, ‘well, I have a bunny I haven’t figured out what to do with while I’m here…’ They all got very excited, and insisted Lizzy come up with me. I didn’t have Robbie at this point.
So Lizzy is out of town with me. She’s getting worse and worse with car rides. When I first took her to the vet, or the BF’s, she was more mad than anything else, but now she just looks so upset that it kills me to drag her around. I was bringing her into the theatre every morning, and then smuggling her into the hotel room at night, and she did okay once she was inside either place, but the process of catching her (she bolts and hides when she gets the slightest inkling I’m about to nab her for a car ride), shoving her in her carrier, and driving her in the car was AWFUL! For unrelated reasons, I got moved to another hotel, whose general manager apparently works with a dog rescue, so they allow pets for a $75 room-cleaning fee! And this is a Marriott–not a no-name hotel…very nice! So now I just leave Lizzy in the hotel room during the day. She LOVES hotel rooms! Beds to crawl under, drapes to play in, new smells to explore! She actually really loves being in new places…she just hates getting there…
Meanwhile, Robbie is a sweetheart, but I knew he wouldn’t be up to this chaos, especially since he and Lizzy don’t know each other yet, and we’re dealing with his flea-issues, etc. So I called the Bunny Bunch, a “local” rescue (they’re 45 minutes away, but that’s a normal commute for me…when I don’t have a scared rabbit in the car!). Their founder does bunny-boarding at her home, and she’s really great and supportive, and she’s going to groom him for me while she’s got him and try to clean up the worst of his matted fur. It’s such a great place, too…a big bunny-shop (yay for bunny toys!), and lots of rabbits, half of whom I wanted to take home with me! Also, she said that if I bring Lizzy and Robbie back out later after he’s fixed, she’ll help me make the initial introduction and help teach me how to bond the two of them, which makes me feel a lot better.
I was worried that Robbie would be upset to be relocated again so soon after getting dragged in from the wild, but when I left, he was happily munching hay, and didn’t care that I was leaving at all. I bought Lizzy some of that blend of hay, though, since Robbie seemed to like it much more than the timothy I’d been feeding them…and we know how Lizzy hates the timothy, anyway!
It makes me sad that by the time I get back, Robbie will have spent more time in boarding than with me, though. But he’s in good hands…
Also, in this weekend of mayhem, the BF moved, away from the family compound, with Thumper & Flower. And now he has an apartment mate who can take care of the buns so he can come up on weekends, so neither of us has the schlep bunnies around. Yay!
Sigh. Hopefully things will settle back down in September!
aw im glad everything is going well! i would love to see some more pics when robbie is all cleaned up!
your BF got Flower too?! awesome! (i guess i missed that as well… lol!)
