I saw on numerous places on this site that pine and cedar shavings are bad for bunnies…

        Can someone explain why?

Also, can I just use hay as litter in my bun’s litter box?

Pine and cedar shavings emit phenols which can cause cancer and upper respiratory problems in small animals. It can also be a huge problem if they are on these litters and they go under anesthesia as well as it can increase the liver enzyme values.

You can just use hay however it is not very odor absorbent and it’s really too pricey in my opinion.

Now you can use a pelleted litter that is made from pine as the phenols have been removed during processing – these are basically sawdust that is pelleted…an example of this is Feline Pine.

Hay for me is not a problem – we put up 10,000 bales for our dairy cows so I won’t be running out anytime soon!  So if just hay is okay to use, I’ll just stick with that.

Wow :~) You may just want to put some newspaper under that though – I just wonder how it will absorb the urine…

You’ll probably be fine with some newspaper and hay then!! Lucky!
