For those who aren’t familiar, Nori is a japanese item used in making sushi. Its basically pressed and dried seaweed. I was trying to find something green for Layla, and figured I’d try a little bit of it. She went NUTS! Now, I’m trying to find out if there’s any concern over giving rabbits nori, and I’m finding absolutely nothing information wise. Anyone heard anything? I figure it should be ok, seaweed is basically a green, right?

Thats the best info I can find about it though I’m sure there’s more out there.

http://www.vnc.qld.edu.au/enviro/etselh03.htm says that Rabbits have been known to eat seaweed in the winter, so I would assume that if Nori (don’t know anything about it) is very simular to seaweed, it should be fine. But til you get a real answer, I wouldn’t feed it to Layla too much.

Maybe I’m wrong….but I thought some processed Nori has a hi sodium content—please check that?  The other thought I had was that Kelp & Seaweed have high Iodine levels.  I’m not sure how that might affect a rabbit.  In people this can be used for people w/ sluggish (non-clinical levels) of thyroid.  Is there a Japanese House rabbit assoc?  I’m wondering if you can find more input through that type of resource b/c sea veggies are more abundant resource than ground veggies.

WOW now that’s a question I’ve never heard before!!

I agree with the high salt levels, but maybe a small amount you gave is not to be worried about. Dana ^^ would be a great resource for this question —and let us know what she says-maybe you’ve discovered a new bunny treat!!

                        Just got a response

                        —————————–

I can’t imagine that a bit of nori would hurt your bunny. Because it’s dried, the nutrients will be more concentrated than in fresh algae. So use with caution, to avoid overloading your bunny with calcium or other things that could have unpredictable results in high concentrations.

                        Hope that helps.

                        Dana

Nori has high salt– lots of sodium. I’d worry about that the most, except that aren’t bunnies allowed to have salt wheels? I think a LITTLE Nori is probably okay… but not as food.
