› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Rabbit Meat at Safeway
Safeway stores in Washington State and elsewhere are now offering frozen rabbit parts as a snack food. Located in the freezer case and displayed much like buffalo wings, Safeway is trying to start a new line of mass consumption novelty products based on rabbit meat.
This marks a new attempt by the rabbit processing industry to make rabbit meat more mainstream. The rabbit meat comes from Pel-Freez Arkansas, the largest rabbit processor in the United States, which “processes” rabbits from breeders across the US and now, evidently, China as well.
This attempt to move rabbit meat from a marginal product to a mainstream product is a signal of bad news to come for rabbits. As production ramps up, the rabbits being bred and killed will suffer even more. (Pel-Freez’s website has an online application that anyone can fill out to become a Pel-Freez supplier of rabbits.)
If you are concerned about this trend and want to let Safeway know your concerns, you can send them a polite note to:
Customer Service Center
Safeway Inc. — M/S 10501

Phoenix, AZ 85038 – 9093
Safeway, by the way, has a statement on their website about animal welfare and its “comprehensive animal welfare program to ensure that both its national brand and private label suppliers have programs in place standard for the humane treatment of animals in all aspects of animal husbandry, shipment, and handling during the harvest process.” Rabbits are not covered under the federal Humane Methods of Slaughter Law, so there is no way to ensure that under current law rabbits raised and slaughtered for food do get humane treatment.
Safeway owns Vons, Kroger, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Genuardi’s and Carrs.
Please feel forward to cross post!
Kroger and Carr’s are big suppliers at Fred Meyers in my state. We also have Safeway here. I’m going to get a jump on them and send my ‘polite note’ to my local supermarkets.
How could they? Seriously! How could they even think of it? How much more like China is our country going to become??? *steams*
Unfortunately for our friends, they make the perfect food source. They don’t need to be ‘free range’ like bovines nor do they take as long to mature plus the high reproduction rate. And, unlike chickens, their fur can be used in other venues so it is more profitable.
I hate to break our friends down like that but there you go.
As for me, I’ve just decided to start shopping exclusively at Albertsons.
Oh! I miss Albertson’s!
My best friend and I used to haunt our local one and the Walgreen’s next to it. ^_^
But…isn’t that also a subsidiary of Safeway?
I think vegetarianism is looking better every day. I’m beginning to think you can’t trust ANY meat because you just don’t know where (or who) it’s from.
Of course, now they’re talking about radiating our veggies too, so…. >.<
Oh noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s horrible!
I just heard about this today – I am sooooooooo MAD! I am fuming!!! I go to Kroger at least 3 times a week. The house I am moving too is right next to a Wal-Mart though so i can easily giv up shopping at Kroger and for the time being will just go to ALberstons (Is Albertsons safe?) I am getting ready to write a letter to management at the Kroger near me right now, feel free to email me if you’d like to see a copy of what I come up with!
I was just on the Safeway site and did not see Kroger listed – are we sure Kroger is a Safeway store?
I don’t think Kroger is part of Safeway.
Kroger is the generic version of many foods on the shelves at my store, along with Private Selection, which I think it strictly Fred Meyers.
But they were the ones that alerted us to an e.coli scare recently, so they handle the meat products.
if Kroger isn’t selling any rabbit meat I wouldn’t worry about it. just those stores that DO.
I know certain Bi-Lo supermarkets and Publix are selling rabbit meat as well!!
this is deplorable…plus does the US really need to import rabbit meat from China???
We all need to e-mail, write letters, anything we can do. Otherwise, this trend WILL grow. Do not complain and say how sad and terrible, unless you are taking some action. It only takes a moment to write a letter…
thats awful but its hard to say ‘i dont want you selling rabbit meat as i class them as pets’ when we eat pigs and ducks and stuff and yet people class them as pets in some parts of the world, sad but true. There is just nothing we can do really, except try to stop backyard breeders having babies and shipping them off 2 the butchers yard. Awful Awful people. I hate people >.<
ugh. i think i’ll go get sick.
Well it is fact people do love the taste of rabbit. They are easy and mature fairly quickly. However the concern about their care is important. Hopefully we can get together and try to change the law to cover rabbits too. The law someone mentioned in prev post about humane treatment. I know my buns always got humane treatment. And were clean. We got them vet care too. Even tho they were for food. That was when I was little.
Tho not every breeder of rabbits will treat them well. The ones in for a fast buck surely won’t care. There are good breeders and bad out there.
I know here people canvas the libraries and such for signatures to add or change or ammend a law. Can someone come up with a written form and we some of us can go out in person asking for signatures to put this on a ballet come voting time.?We can send it to our local congressmen and congresswomen.
That way they can be treated humanely and slaughtered as humanely as possible. Lets see what we can do if someone will type up or make up a paper on it I can print it out and start on my end for signatures. And we can also write directly to our representatives as well. Until the time for voting comes up. I dont’ know how all that works how much time you have to get signatures and when the voting for each area will be.
I dont’ think we have time for that right now beings voting is coming up real soon.
Any takers any other ideas.
Yes someone who is good at wording can make a letter we all print out and see to it that our representatives get it. Instead of the signatures right now?
This makes me so sad. And angry…very angry…
i would imagine a law already does exsist to make sure that they have to be cared for properly, i cant see how it wouldnt be classed as cruelty, however saying that there isnt really much going on to monitor the care of any kind of meat product, alot of people abide by the laws but then again alot dont.
to be perfectly honest, i dont think people can say ‘i agree with eating pork but not rabbits’ you either have to be for eating meat or against it.
I goofed….. I was referring to Humane Slaughter. Per someone’s previous post
ughh! its the same with all animals though… if they start killing rabbits it will be the same old story keeping them with no regard to their feelings, suffering in small cages, non humane deaths etc… and its makes it even harder being a rabbit owner!.. this is why im vegetariain! ![]()
why don’t we eat cats and dogs?
what’s so tabu about that?
why bother rescuing rabbits like ppl rescue cats and dogs?
rabbits are pets just like cats and dogs. there is no difference.
not to remind everybody of the inhumane slaughters happening:

I don’t eat any meat. so not that I would know, but
ppl say rabbit tastes like chicken. why do they not eat chicken then?
isn’t it enough that we kill cows, pigs and chicken?
I never understood why anybody would want to eat a carcass. ![]()
I think its sick.
we all need to email, write letters, anything to get rabbit meat off the shelves. otherwise this “trend” WILL grow!!
there is already enough dead animals in the freezers!!
I put myself in a rabbit’s shoe. and imagine having no right of a decent life. your purpose only to be born in to this world just to end up on someones dinner plate. some ppl say animals do not have any feelings. feel no pain. well, I really do disagree on that. this issue is very deplorable.
i agreed with nadine, i am a vegetarian, and i just think the thought of eating something that could have had a chance to live a happy life, is mean. i hope we are able to get that off the shelfs
Sorry guys. I like cows and pigs and chickens both alive and on my plate. Veggies are my least favorite food group.
I personally can’t protest the sale of rabbit meat at the grocery store. If people start doing that it opens the door for protesting all meat sales. All I can do is choose not to buy that product. I don’t shop at Safeway but if the store I do shop starts selling rabbit meat I’ll just stay away from it the way I stay away from veal and choose to buy free range chicken eggs instead of the cheaper ones.
what i dont particuarly get is that as far as im concerened all animals are equal and should be treated in the same fair loving way, and although rabbits do hold a sentimental value because they are our pets, when you think about it in a fair way, what makes it any worse eating a pig or a chicken or something? – however i have to say before i became a vegetarian i would eat most kinds of meat but not rabbit. tbh – i just dont agree with the whole meat thing – i dont think putting animals through a horrible life for instance battery farming chickens for eggs etc & then only to be killed in a not nice way is worth it for the taste…
i wud maybe eat meat if my family could afford to buy all free range from a farm shop where you know where its coming from
people all over the world eat cat and dog, its just something you cant discriminate that one animal is ok and others arent.
