Okay so i had a question. My bunny Pepper is almost at the four month mark. He is going in for a bunny check up on thursday. But i had a question about his pellets and how much i feed him. I follow the diet guidelines listed on here, and i feed him 1/3 cup of pellets a day, and two cups of veggies a day and unlimited timothy hay.(right now i am slowly transitioning from old pellets to new oxbow bunny basics T pellets) I give him the pellets in the morning, usually about 9 am, and the veggies in the afternoon usually about 3 pm. by the time that i wake up the next morning to feed him and he acts like he hasnt ate a day in his life! He knows whats going on and follows me to the closet where i keep his food, waits there and then follows me back to his pen where i set his food bowl down and he runs to it like hes starving! Should I feed him more? or is he just being a greedy bunny? lately i have been tryin to put a very VERY small amount of extra pellets in his bowl before i go to bed hoping it helps, but it doesnt seem to. I dont want to over feed him!

I wouldn’t be too concerned. My bunnies do the exact same thing! They ALWAYS act like their starving and I feel like the world’s worst bunny mom. I have the same routine. They get their pellets in the AM, greens in the PM , hay all day and a treat once a week. And they react the same way each and every time!

Dont worry, as long as there is always hay there he will be fine, mine get really excited when i feed them in the morning even if there are pellets still left in their bowl, i think they are just happy to see you! The vet should tell you if he is over/under weight and then you can change his diet accordingly, but for the minute i think the guidelines are fine for him. I give mine a few more pellets at nigth just because it distracts them from trying to run past me when im shutting their door hehe! Dont worry your bun looks and sounds very healthy, let us know how you get on at the vets

Wait, aren’t you supposed to feed them unlimited pellets untill they are spayed/neutered or are a year old? Am I feeding her wrong… she is about 4 months old… I don’t know. Hopefully it is fine or Fern will turn out to be Fat Fern, lol.

I never want strangers to see my buns at feeding time because they’d swear I’m starving them! They get pellets and veggies a.m. and p.m. and hay all day but when they hear me getting the meal ready they freak out!!!! Olivia sticks her nose in the door latch and shakes it with her teeth, Stormy chews on his celiing bars and Bindi attacks the crap out of his carrot ka-bob! When I lower the dishes into the cages they can’t even wait till it hits the floor to grab a bite! So no, it’s not just your bunny! Most bunnies are total meal time drama queens!!!!

usually its unlimited hay and pellets up until about 7 months but i think once they get to about 12 weeks its usual to switch over to pellets and veg and if you are adding in calories from veg i think it makes sense to reduce pellet intake, the rabbit society says:

                  Birth to 3 weeks–mother’s milk
3 to 4 weeks–mother’s milk, nibbles of alfalfa and pellets
4 to 7 weeks–mother’s milk, access to alfalfa and pellets
7 weeks to 7 months–unlimited pellets, unlimited hay (plus see 12 weeks below)
12 weeks–introduce vegetables (one at a time, quantities under 1/2 oz.)

so i guess its whatever you feel best for your bun.

Sophie is exactly the same way! It makes me nervous too, even though i know better. she gets a 1/4 cup of pellets in the evening, 1 1/2 cups of fresh veggies in the morning and she always has hay. the second i put the pellets in there, she acts like she hasn’t eaten in weeks. I think they live to eat. LOL. I am much worse with the treats. It’s usually a raisin (or 3) every other day, yogurt drops or dried apple slices.

doesnt everyone live to eat really? We mark the passing of our day by meal times.. its lunchtime, dinnertime, teatime etc. I think bunnies are the same they just monitor the passing of the day with when their slaves drop pellets in lol

OMG! That is so funny and true! My bunnies are sitting in the x-pen waiting for their greens when I get home. It’s the funniest thing! They are probably thinking “it’s so hard to get good slaves these days!”

Mine always act like they’re starving. They get breakfast about 7am, but sometimes around 6am Hannah will start throwing bowls around the cage and making a racket until we come down and feed her.

ONLY 4 months?  I’m with Moonlight Wolf and Kimberly — unless your bunny is overweight, you can feed more pellets!

Young bunnies are growing growing growing and so that is why they can get more pellets.

The guidelines we have on the BinkyBunny diet page are for ADULT bunnies.  For young bunnies I refer people to link directly to the HRS diet page. http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/diet.html#babies

For your convenience I have copied the info from the HRS diet page (link above)

What quantities of food should I feed babies and “teenagers”?

                                      • Birth to 3 weeks–mother’s milk
                                      • 3 to 4 weeks–mother’s milk, nibbles of alfalfa and pellets
                                      • 4 to 7 weeks–mother’s milk, access to alfalfa and pellets
                                      • 7 weeks to 7 months–unlimited pellets, unlimited hay (plus see 12 weeks below)
                                      • 12 weeks–introduce vegetables (one at a time, quantities under 1/2 oz.)

What quantities of food should I feed young adults? (7 months to 1 year)

                                      • introduce timothy hay, grass hay, and oat hays, decrease alfalfa
                                      • decrease pellets to 1/2 cup per 6 lbs. body weight
                                      • increase daily vegetables gradually
                                      • fruit daily ration no more than 1 oz. to 2 oz. per 6 lbs. body weight (because of calories)
