  Hi everyone,
  
  I’m in Calgary, AB and every so often I browse the pets section of kijiji.ca looking for some good deals on an xpen or other things for Smudge I might be able to get. I also keep an eye on the “other pets for sale” section as this is where most rabbits are posted when someone is looking to re-home them and the “to give or donate” section also. This morning when I decided to browse I came across this ad.

  Warning: Although the pictures are not graphic there are graphic descriptions about the quality of the “meat”!
  
  I have already gone flagged this ad as offensive, and while I know that selling rabbit meat isn’t illegal here I do think that posting something like this in the “Other PETS for sale” section of this site is wrong. I actually thought someone was trying to rehome the cute buns in the picture until I actually read the title. Please help by clicking on the link and flagging this ad as offensive (scroll down on it’s located on the right hand side), if more people do it then it should be taken down. I know this will not save the bunnies. I HATE that there is nothing legally wrong with what this person is doing. I feel phsyically sick thinking about it, however we can stop them from advertising in a pet lovers section of a website that is widely used in my city. Thanks for reading.

  Does reporting the post go to the poster of the ad? That’s what it looks like to me when I tried to flag it.

  I’m pretty sure it goes to Kijiji. When I did it I got a little message running across the top of the screen saying that the site people had been notified and would investigate the ad.
  
  Edit: Yes I went back to re-read the message that came up. When you click the “report this ad as offensive” it gets reported to the people that monitor Kijiji. I think the only way to reply to the poster is the email reply box located on the right side there.

  I guess when I click that for some reason it takes me to the email to email the poster which is why I was confused but it does give me the banner you describe as well.

  Oh yeah, I think the email the poster ad comes up automatically all the time. My computer even scrolls down slightly predicting that you will want to go there to reply, but its always open. Sorry about the confusion

  I’m sorry for being ignorant here. but what does the “flagging” help? Either way they’re still going to end up as Rabbit meat…

  I know it doesn’t help the rabbits. It just stoped the person from being able to advertise their meat in the pet section or on the site at all. If people find the ad offensive the site will take it down and not allow it to be reposted. Kijiji is a very popular website here, more so than Craigslist I was hoping that at least if they were allowed to post their ad they would have less customers. As for what can actually done about the rabbits and the person selling them… I can’t really think of anything that can be done unfortunately. Sending a nasty or even educational email is useless because what they’re doing is perfectly legal. Other than actually buying the rabbits in order to save them I can’t think of anything. Unless their “facility” goes against some animal control law. I am open to any suggestions. I was really only hoping to have the ad removed so that other pet people would not have to view it, and that it would take away from their advertising abilities.

  As far as I know I think no. Once the add has been deamed “offensive” they shouldn’t be allowed to repost it. The only other “section” they might try to repost it would be under the “other” link in the pets section however the poster has to supply their email address in order to activate their post so that is how they control what gets posted and what doesn’t. If the same email address tries to repost they would catch it. But I have never run into an ad like this on kijiji. I don’t know if this is how they deal with things I just got the “gist” of this from their terms of agreement. I’m sure there would be loopholes to try and repost the ad. I’m not really sure.

  Rabbit meat should be made illegal. I don’t understand people like those. they just want to make easy money. Bunnies – for us – are our P E T S and NOT meat!!!!! it disgusts me to know people like this are out there.
  
  I think we should go and eat other peoples pets too…like their cats and dogs. there is no law that says you’re not allowed to eat them either. In China and Korea its even on the menu. maybe people will get it then.

  Thanks for helping, I know we didn’t save the bunnies but at least we stopped the people from being able to advertise to a large audience for free. I’m glad the monitors agreed that the content was offensive. Thanks again!

  Its the same with other animals … chickens, pigs, cows, deer etc … and a lot of us eat these animals.
  
  It is different to us because we have bunnies as pets …
  
  The most and upsetting issue I have read on here is the live skinning of animals (dogs/cats/etc) in China … yes China!! OH God the thought of that, makes me want to cry again …. Now that should be illegal ….

  Killing rabbits for meat is so barbaric, especially considering the fact that rabbits legally have no rights to protect them as they are considered in the same category as chickens and have no rights to be treated humanely.
  
  For anyone wanting to help stop the use of rabbits for meat, I urge you to visit Rabbit Rescue.ca’s advocacy section to learn ways to help.

  I look in ads, too, and on Seattle Craigslist someone was selling “Lucky Rabbit’s Foot (The other parts come with it)”– I nearly lost it. :/ Sorry you saw one, too.

  i think you should contact your local rescue and make them aware that the person is going to sell them as meat rabbits, they will probably go and take them.
