Does anyone else notice their buns poops changing colour with the different colour of hay given? I switched this week to another type of Timothy, same brand but it’s called Autumn Harvest Sweet Grass. They can’t get enough of it.  It’s a dark green, leafy hay and I noticed all my buns have darker poops than usual. I’m assuming this is normal, just wondering if anyone else had any poop colour change due to diet change?

Yes, the same thing happened to my buns. My rescue was all out of the usual timothy hay, so I had to purchase Oxbow and I noticed that their poops were darker than usual. When I switched back to the regular old timothy, their poops were the normal color. So, yeah, it’s the hay causing it.

I notice this the most when I give my guys a lot of oat hay.  Their poops are almost yellow in color because of the golden color of the oat straw.

Absolutely!  When Edson was eating timothy hay the poops were a medium color brown.  When I switched to orchard hay they were much darker and I could detect a smell which I had never smelled before.  I had a whole post on this because I thought something was wrong!  Very normal!

Yes, not just color but aroma, as knowltons said. I alternate between wheat and timothy and, not only do I notice a color change and different smell, but the consistency changes as well. The wheat tends to leave their droppings lighter in color and flakier in consistency and they seem to be able to make more poops easier than when they eat timothy. Almost like there’s more iron in it or something…really firms them up and I don’t particularly care for it.

I like to see bunnies making big and numerous poopies. Let’s me know they are healthy and happy. ^_^
