well…. last nite the buns got nail trims. Was fairly easy. Bunny burrito style. Ruby was calm.  Cotton fussed and squirmed in his bunny burrito. I had to stop and stroke his face and calm him talking softly to him. Finally he settled down and I trimmed all nails without cuttin a vein. Phew that was  a relief.

Of course once I let cotton up he jumped up on me and dug furiously on my shirt shoulder.

Oh b4 I trimmed Cotton’s nails I had put the vegie heart treat out for him. He got to it b4 I could stop him and took off with it. I reluctantly let him eat it. Didn’t feel like getting a growl grunt and smack on my hand taking the snack away.

Ruby got hers after I was done with her nails.  I gave Cotton another one. He decided not to make up over the vegie treat from bb. He took off first to his lounging spot. Then we made up.

Cotton is back to digging on my shirts again like normal. Such a sweetie.

Do you do anything special to help soften the sharp edge of their nails? I have debated filing them because they are soooo sharp!

I cannot get Shadow’s nails. If I trance him, he has a habit of faking you out, he will go from 0 to 60 in a second. And his nails are dark, so I need more arms, 2 to hold him, 2 to hold a light to see the quick and one to hold the clippers and one to hold his foot. The bunny burrito is tricky, he knows what the towel is for and then it becomes a high speed chase.

Kudos to the both of you for being good bunny moms.

yes I have considered filing them down. Especially the young one. I haven’t done it tho I just cut. Wow you got all those nails and only quicked one  Wow good going.

That Shadow sounds like he has things all figured out.

Wow, Adee, you must be an expert! Help! I failed miserably at trimming Thumper’s nails earlier today… How do you keep ahold on them? I don’t think I really understand bunny-burrito… Thumper THRASHES, and bites when he runs out of patience for us bumbling humans… Don’t know what to do, and don’t really want to have to drag him to the vet every month to trim his nails…Help!

You can take off the sharp edges on the nails with an emory board.  These are also the only safe way that I know of to trim the nails of baby rabbits.

Any particular age too young to start trimming nails?

Good question WW.  The issue with baby bunnies is that their quicks are very long and their nails are soft (and sharp too!) I think the guildelines were to not actually clip the nails until the babies were 3 or 4 months old.

I filed Kahluas nails when she was a baby.

I haven’t filed them yet, but after a nail clip I look like I was attacked by a cat, because their nails are soo sharp for a few days afterword!! I think I could file Kahlua and Rupert but Chuck is so nervous being held (I think he was dropped at some point) I don’t think I’ll ever bother filing him down after a clip.

When you trim nails, do you just trim the tip or do you go for further length?  Sorry, but I really stink at trimming rabbit nails.
