im SOOO sorry about the wait. i restored my pc and couldnt get the internet working properly. BUT NOW. im good.

ANYWAYS. my bunny. it turns out the bump was an abcess and was popped. she is doing really really good. we are putting pollysporn on her face (told to by vet) and closly watching for infections (seeing as how she is an outdoor bunny) do u guys think i should bring her in while she is in the healing process? less chance of infection?

and her face might be filling up again (we dont quite no yet. hard to tell) so we might have to take her back.   BUT besides that, she is VERY healthy and i am watching over her.

I am glad you are keeping an eye on that abscess as they can reoccur very easily.

Did the vet give any other meds? This vet worries me if you were ONLY given some cream to put on it. She should be getting specific antibiotics like Baytril. Abscesses, especially on the face and jaw, are serious and do commonly return. You have to watch very closely because abcesses can actually attach to other facial parts deep underneath – like muscles, cause eye damage, etc. So it’s important that if you see it returning, that she sees a vet asap.

If your vet did not give any oral liquid meds or injections for you to give everyday, then i am worried that your bunny may not be getting the proper treatment. It’s important to have a rabbit-savvy vet.

Because again, absesses are not just  surface wounds.   When a bunny has an infection, it creates that white goop  that can actually develop tentacles that attach to muscle. That’s why just some topical stuff is not enough. The abscess is below the surface, and a rabbit needs meds to help fight the infection via it’s immune system. That’s where Baytril comes in.

Regarding your bunny being outside – As you know, I am an advocate of housing bunnies inside, however, you would need to bring both bunnies in since they are bonded. You should not separate them. This will only hinder healing.

NOTE: I made some editing changes to my post – added some stuff, and noticed you responded right away, so make sure to read it again, just in case you read it before I edited it.

Also, do you know how to find a rabbit-savvy vet? Do want help with how to find one?

Wow, that definitely seems like you are looking in the right direction.    Good job Panic!

I think the best thing to do is put them to the test  – use these screening questions provided by the House Rabbit Society.   http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html#questions

They also provide the answers, and so you can know the answers that the vet SHOULD be giving you.   Also be sure that when you do speak with someone and they give you the wrong answer, that it’s not just some misinformed receptionist.   It happens all the time where the people at the desk will tell you information that the vet would not agree with.

If they don’t pass your screening question test, here is a list of more vets, that might be near you.

http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/Vet_CA-AL.html   NOTE: the vet you found is on that list!

There are definitely a few in Calgary – just be sure that even though this is a recommended list of rabbit savvy vets, to still ask them the questions because things change, vets change.

                    Keep us updated.

EDITED TO ADD:  Oh, you had asked about what a “savvy” really was.  You were right.  A vet who is rabbit savvy  will know that there are very important difference when it comes to the treatment of rabbits.   Those differences, like the sensitivities to meds, anethesia, digestive tract issues, are a matter of life and death.   Many vets schools are not focused on exotics, a vet has to specialize in it to get the proper education for this, so not all vets, just because they are vets are fully qualified to treat rabbits – which are actually considered exotics because of the differences I stated.

Looks like you did an excellent job in searching this out, it looks promising!  Great job!
