Ok, as many of you know Faline will finally be making her way home on Tuesday (yes two days!) She was born on June 1st so shes still fairly young, Rain is an absolute hilarious bun’ to watch. She plays and runs and really is entertaining to watch and even hand wrestles, fetches, exc frequently, exc but she doesnt like being held very much. She would much rather steal your heart with her antics during play. Which leads me to my question. I would LOVE it if Faline would love to snuggle, be held, exc. In YOUR opinion is that something that is created through positive experiences of frequent holding or is it something they are born with?

        What has your experience been?

If baby rabbits are handled a lot as babies, they get used to it and are more tolerant of being handled.  In terms of snuggling though, I think that is born into them.  Our bunny DJ started out life as a feral bunny, he was caught and taken to a shelter at about 4 months of age or so.  He is very snuggly (when he is in the mood of course), so clearly some of it is just personality.  If the persona handling them is confident, bunnies respond and squirm less, so the person is part of it too.

I handled Spockie daily from 9 weeks old and he was totally comfortable with it all his life. He also was very sociable and loved to visit with people – their feet at least. But he was never snuggly. My opinion from him and from what I’ve read here is that snuggling is personality, but handling comes as osprey described.

I’d agree-they can come snuggly but if not, you can work with them to tolerate handling well.

Man…we make sure we handle those bunny boys lots. They already seek us out when they’re done scampering around during out of cage time. Just a few minutes ago I was sitting on the couch and Tank was scratching at my pant leg…trying to get up on the couch! I picked him up and he crawled up on my chest and settled in.

He started grooming me and my oldest daughter narrowed her eyes at me and said “He’s NOT grooming you, he’s tasting you. Bunnicula is going to visit you tonight!”

                    She was a little jealous.

Hee hee T&R’s Mom! That was one of my favorite books as a kid! What was the subtitle? “The Celery Stalks at Midnight”?!

                      Beware!
