I got home today and found 2 cecals in TigerLily’s cage, I took her to the vet on Monday and provided a sample of the food the pet store sold me, the vet said not to throw it away and to finish the bag but that I should buy an Alfalfa based pellet and not a dried fruit and nut and pellet medley like what I was feeding her.

I bought TigerLily some fresh organic Basil today at the market and gave her two leaves which she devoured!

What to do? She has an endless supply of Orchard Hay in her Cage and she does eat it and munch on it often.

Should I just buy the Alfalfa pellet tomorrow and toss this pet store brand? Can I feed her more Basil? She is only 2 and a half months old.

Confused…. I read conflicting reports online. Some places say shes too young for the Basil.

          Hello

I would dispose of the medley combination … not good for our buns and will cause  poopy butt and other digestive problems … buy a good quality timothy based pellet but because bunny is so young alfalfa based pellets will be good for her …  The alfafa based pellets have a higher fibre content and generally good for younger rabbits.  Depending on her weight, depends on the amount of pellets …Look under Bunny Info above here and click onto the Diet Section … Great tips!

Give her unlimited hay … again the alfalfa hay is a good one but if you can’t get hold of that brand the Timothy hay is also an excellent choice.

This will be an excellent start for her …

I’m glad to assist … starting her off on a good diet will eliminate any nasties happening later on.

I am a little unsure on when you can introduce greens into her diet … its seems ages ago now that I had a baby bunny … but however, when you do start to give her greens … just introduce one veggie at a time and see how she goes with it … some bunnies’ tummys are very sensitive and giving her too much too quickly can be nasty.

Is your bunny girl outside or inside?

you can actually give her straight timothy pellets from the beginning, but offer alfalfa hay along with timothy hay. greens can be introduced betw/ 8 and 12 weeks, introduce one a week.

At 2 1/2 months she can definitely handle veggies.  The trick is to get her internal systems used to the new types of food.  So you’ve determined that she likes basil, that’s a fine food for her.  Give her a small amount (1 or 2 sprigs) each day for three days and watch for poopy butt problems.  If there are no poop problems, try the same trick with a new veggie, say romaine lettuce or italian parsley (both of these are faves at my house).  Work her up to three or four items that you know will not cause trouble, then offer her a small salad once a day with the items mixed.

I’ll second the vote to ditch the pellet mix with the dried fruit and stuff in it.  The more boring the pellet looks, the healthier it will be for her.  She can have alfalfa at her age, and then transition to a timothy pellet when she is 7 months or so.

                      UPDATE:

So i bought TigerLily some Timothy based pellets because my local PetCO didn’t have Alfalfa based pellets. I did however buy her some Alfalfa Hay which she seems to prefer over her Orchard hay that I was feeding her initially. The Basil went ok but she got Diareah this morning and I’m thinking maybe the Basil doesn’t agree with her (i was feeding her 2 sprigs a day) So im goign to keep her on the pellets and hay for a few more days and watch her poop to make sure its ok before i try a new veggie later next week.

Actually, I hope you didn’t throw out that medley stuff. Even though it’s not good for her, it’s best to transition slowly, especially at this age.

We just had a discussion about this – about even when you switch from something unhealthy to healthy, you should do so slowly, because the bacteria that was digesting all of “original” food may die off in larger numbers if you cut it out all together, and when large numbers of bacteria die off, they emit a gas that can cause digestive upset. (there are different kinds of bacteria for different kinds of elements in food)  So, though each bunny is different, it is a good idea when changing to mix in the new food with the old and slowly increase the new with the old.

Alfalfa pellets are okay for her at this age as she is growing, and unless she continues to have digestive upsets, the extra fat and calories are fine for all the growth spurts she’s having. At 7 months she’ll need to start switching to Timothy.

UPDATE.  OH! It looks like you bought Timothy, okay, well this will definitley be a diet shift, and you need to go slow.  Mix the OLD with the new. Do not throw the other away.  If you did, I am sorry, I think you should at least buy some of the old.  It really is important at this age to go slow even when you are switching to a healthier pellet.
