Would anyone here happen to know just WHAT color a bunnies toes should be?
I worry that Mimzy’s seem to look a little too pink, going on red, as if they were irritated. He spends his nights in his Superpet Pen and, although I try to keep bedding in there for him, he just pushes it all away and sleeps on the hard plastic floor. And his toes look ‘sore’ to me. Just the toes, nothing else wrong with the foot. I noticed while I was clipping his nails last week they look almost red.
He does seem to like it when I rub them, as long as I don’t do it too often. He walks, hops and runs just fine, no limping, no callouses.
Is this what they call ‘sore hock’? And if not, is there anything I should do to make those toes look less red and more pink?
I don’t think Pippi has this problem…’course I can’t get hold of her feet long enough to see HER toes. >_<
…hmmm do you mean their toes or their heels?
Definitely the toes, K&K. Their heels are both fine.
I just keep thinking of how bunnies don’t have calloused ‘pads’ on their feet like dogs and cats do, and his little tootsies just seem a little too colorful for me. Nothing like they’re bleeding or anything…just like he’s been serving at McDonald’s all day or something.
It just worries me. ![]()
Just a weird hunch, but are they warm at all? If it’s a bit hot this summer, maybe a cool, almost dry washcloth on them for a few minutes might reduce the redness.
I’m thinking that because the smooth plastic may be cooler for him too. (And Spockie always pushed his stuff away to lay down on the plastic floor.)
Oh, Little-Bit NEVER settles for a padded floor. She always has to re-arrange her furniture so she can have that hard plastic floor.
It’s cool on their bellies.
Binkles used to lay across the floor register. xD They love cool things.
Hm…warm ‘rosy’ toes…yeah, that makes sense!
Thanks guys!
I’ll bet that’s all it was. *sigh of relief*
Are the toes red on all feet – front and back? Normally rosy toes are fine, but sometimes the skin on a toe can get irritated but usually there are special circumstances. For example, I had to watch Bailey’s front toes from actually getting similar problems to sore hocks - because of her hind leg weakness, she tended to use her front paws to help “pull” more than normal.
If you can post a picture of it, then we can all really tell if it’s just a normal rosy or if there is something more going on.
I’ll try, BB, he’s extremely hard to get to hold still especially when it comes to his feet.
I don’t notice that he uses his front paws more or his back, I think it’s a pretty even distribution of weight. So far, I’ve only noticed the front toes being pink or reddish.
His back feet actually have a lot more fluff on them than the front, so they are harder to judge color on.
Ooookeeyyyy…can y’all see his feet?
lolz…I’m sorry guys, I’ll try again later, but he is mighty sore with me right now. He HATES the flashy box. >_<
His feet look just like ears! No wonder you’re worried.
HAHHAHHAHHA!! Funny….cute! Classic bunny cooperation.
BTW – love your necklace.

My Foofy LOVES the flashy box! It is almost as if he KNOWS what it is! I swear, he starts showing off and always wants to get REALLY close to it. He is such a ham. The things he does sometimes, I swear he knows WAY more than we any rabbit should…for example (and I know this is OT) he has three balls in his that he plays with and when he is not playing with his toys, he stores them in one corner of his cage. Almost EVERY SINGLE TIME he puts them there, he arranges them from smallest to largest or vice versa!
Back to the topic at hand (kinda), around the time he turned 8 two of Foofy’s toenails turned black! We thought they had started to rot of something, but the vet said that was not at all unusual. The same way rabbits’ fur can change pigment, their toes can!
Hahaha – that photo cracked me up
I think that sounds pretty normal to me, sometimes my bunnies like to sleep on their blankets, and sometimes they like to pull up all the blankets that mommy arranged so nicely in order to lay on the linoleum. I agree that they like the coolness on their tummies. Juli has sorehocks, and she always hops around on her toes instead of evenly distributing her weight so I try to keep an eye on her – but I haven’t checked her toes recently so I probably should!
*giggles* Thanks guys, I do feel better about those toes…I just wish I could get a shot of them, yanno? They’re SO *squee!* ADORABLE…even if they look red to me.
Like my other pictures of Pippi show, bunnies can have STRANGE skin coloring. Her’s is actually kind of greyish. Scared the life out of me when I first saw it, thought she was in shock or something…then realized it’s her normal color.
…
Thank goodness bunnies don’t wear make-up. Can you imagine trying to find a foundation for a hue like that? :-/
BB, thanks, I just got that bone/jade bear print necklace at the Discovery III stern-wheeler tour while my mum-in-law was here. My daughter got one too that’s silver with a hematite stone in the center. They have some gorgeous tourist trap stuff there! ^_^
I think you’re right to question redness. I’d watch for any changes – if it gets more red rather than lighter pink, you might have a budding problem.
Now that you know Pip’s skin is predominantly gray you will be on the alert if you ever see red skin on her. Make sense?
