        Hi,

Im just wondering if anyone can tell me when a male rabbits hormones start kicking in? I have had Henry my netherlands dwarf for afew weeks now and he is 11weeks old. He is as good as gold. We let him out every morning and evening for a total of 3 to 4 hours usually and have the place pretty much fully bunny proofed now. From reading other peoples posts im aware that his good behaviour may change over the coming weeks and he may become a little terror. im just wondering at what age these hormones kick in and when should i notice this? we are getting him neutered in 2 months so if his behaviour changes hopefully it will only be a short term thing! Thanks for reading this

i’m really glad you’re getting him neutered! males can be neutered when the testicles drop at 3-4 months (so within the next month or so for Henry)… the behavior might start getting a little ramBUNctious at that point. after the neutering, allow about a month for a decrease in hormones.

another thing tho, you do need to be aware that rabbits go thru adolescence which is different than hormone-related misbehavior… so, even with neutering and the absence of hormones, he may still be wild and a little bit destructive up to (or beyond) the first year. it is strictly age-related, so it would happen with or without altering… some bunnies get it worse than others, so you might not even really notice. but don’t be surprised if he calms down after neutering, and then a couple months later some pesky habits return. it will pass.

this is a good article that describes the difference (better than i can…)   http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-3/age-related-behavior.html

Yeah, I’m not looking forward to that at all. I looked into neutering today and it’s gonna cost about $250 for each boy. I hope they’re both boys cuz spays cost more. I’m going to visit a rabbit rescue on Saturday to get some information (and really just because when I emailed for info she invited me to visit and WHO WOULD TURN THAT DOWN?) and she said she can point me in the direction of low cost neuter.

There’s got to be some low cost clinics.  There are many in our area. The rescues would know of some I’m sure.  Good luck with that.
