So as I’m about to begin switching Little-Bit over to adult food, I’m deciding to make that food an Oxbow product. (Unless there is a better one that anyone else knows about..? I’m just assuming here that Oxbow is generally the best for everything.) Though I don’t plan on switching her brand of hay. (Sunseed) Again, unless anyone else suggests differently -I personally have never had any problems with Sunseed, and it is always fresh and nice-smelling. And of course, I want to go ahead and order some Critical Care. Just to have on hand.

So my question to you guys is; is it cheaper to order direct from Oxbow or is there some other (reliable) source that you can order from over the internet that is cheaper?

=( Unfortunately, none of the stores in my area consistantly carry Oxbow products. Occasionally there will be an odd hay bale or two at Petsmart….but…beh.

          Hi, Binkles,
I was never able to find Oxbow here in South Florida in the major pet stores. However, my vet, and another vet not far from her, keeps it stocked up to sell at all times. Also my vet was consulted by a tiny new exotic pet store and she had the store stock up on Oxbow as well.

First, go to the Oxbow site and enter your zip code in the Store finder at the top. I just tried it and it showed the pet store I just mentioned, plus one other. Also, you might try your yellow pages for local vets and call any for exotics and ask if they stock it. I never had to use the vet I went to for it, just popped in every few weeks and picked some up. Once they knew I was doing that they ordered enough for me.

It’s possible that with the price of gas now, it may be just as cheap to have Oxbow ship to you directly, but you can compare.

i looked you up and it showed this…  from the Oxbow store locator:

            Animal Kingdom II

            737-D N Beal Pkwy
            Ft. Walton Beach, FL 32547
            Phone: 850-864-4920
Map to this store || This store is 9.19 miles from your Zip.

i get my timothy hay (40oz bags, 9 dollars each) and T pellets (10 lb. 15 dollars each) at my vet.  the vet is a ten minute drive, convenient when i need to get food and go to the vet… inconvenient when… like today, i just need food, but oh well.  i did a price comparison with the vet prices (which are higher than the website by a few bucks) and the website plus shipping and i still save a lot of money going thru the vet.  there is also a local-owned petstore that carries it, but they are even further than my vet by about 10 more minutes, and their prices are high too.

maybe call this place if is near enough to you, see whether they have it in stock and what their prices are total, then go on the website and add the products to your cart and proceed to shipping to see what the price comes out to.  Drs Foster/Smith also carry Oxbow and i Believe rabbitstop.com also….

            good luck.

yes, and along the lines of what Pam said… it doesn’t hurt to call other exotic vets in your area just to ask if they carry it.  you can always go there to purchase it, even if it’s not your regular vet, and the added bonus… you are aware of other exotic vets in your area in case of an emergency…  my vet was not listed on the Oxbow site, i just knew she carried it b/c we saw her.

            edited again *sorry*

i just checked the American Pet Diner website.  i know Osprey and a few other people use their hay, not sure if they use the pellets too, so i wanted to search in your area.  it showed no locations within 100 miles.  it looks like it might be more expensive than the Oxbow too… and all of the pellets sizes were listed as “out of stock”… but it was worth a shot.

Yes, your vet may carry the Critical Care – you won’t find that in a store though – either the vet or calling Oxbow directly. But get a small bag of this – they do have expiration dates on them but you can put them in the freezer and they will last a bit longer.

I’ve used American Pet Diner pellets and they are comparable to Oxbow if you can find them locally.

As far as ordering on-line – look at the cost of shipping too in addition to the cost of the pellets sometimes with shipping they come out the same or very close – I know I’ve researched this on both Oxbow and APD before and figured they are fairly close when it comes to tacking on shipping. But locally is better if you can find it.

Yes, I did see that particular listing for the pet store that carries Oxbow in my area. Problem is, it’s about 20-25 minutes away and…I don’t really like that pet store.. Last time I was there, they were keeping bunnies in these horrible little wire things that were probably less than a foot in height.

IF it’s the store I’m thinking about. I may just be mixing up stores in my mind! Who knows, I’ll check it out. I just hate seeing bunnies in cages…and I flat refuse to support stores like that.

                But anyway.

I’ll also have a call around to the local exotics vets. Like you said, a bonus in case of an emergency…better than the vet I took Binkles to..

Does anyone know if there’s any significant difference between Sunseed hay and Oxbow hay?

I’m not familar with Sun Seed but if you think it’s fresh and your rabbit likes it I say don’t change a good thing.

i was using sunseed before. it was fine, Meadow ate it, but once i got the Oxbow, i sat there with my head in the bag for five minutes b/c it SMELLED SO GOOD. ever since then she has DEVOURED hay. i’m not saying it’ll be like that for sure with Lil Bit, but i think if it increases her chance of eating a lot of hay (reducing the risk of stasis) it is worth a shot.

I do want to mention that this is the tail end of the good hay season – the oxbow at the sanctuary has not been very great at this point so keep that in mind.

I just ordered some 2nd cutting American Pet Diner which I should receive today or tomorrow – crossing my fingers that is good.

Hmm…for future reference, does change in hay brand need to be gradual? Or is it alright to just give it as long as it’s the same type of hay as the bun was eating before?

Anyway, I don’t think I’m going to want to mess with her hay diet just yet. Maybe sometime in the future. But right now, she’s already going through a VERY gradual Alfalfa to Timothy change, she will soon be going through an equally gradual pellet change, and on top of that, she’ll soon be transferred into my room and be landblasted with having an entire room to herself 24/7. =x So much change!

I think if she is sensitive then you would want to change it gradually just to be on the safe side.

I was going to change from the brand I am using to the Oxbow from the vet – but the vet said Coco was healthy and eating, and if that was working to stick with it.

I did buy the Critter berries treats though.

Plus everything in Canada is super expensive – Having things shipped can add 20-30 dollars on top of the order.
