Wow, 2 1/2 days at the vet is a long time.  The vets and clinics here usually keep them until they wake up from the procedure, usually 4 or 5 hours.  Then you do post operative care and pain management at home.  Your price would be high here, the private vets get around $200 or so for the spay + meds (some are a little higher if they do blood work too) and the clinics are much less, I think $55 US for a spay.  We are fortuante to have a very good low cost spay/neuter clinic nearby that does rabbits.

Some vets also like to keep the bun overnight and that runs around $200. Dr. Harvey did the spay and neuter for my GF’s rabbits and kept them overnight. Meanwhile when the buns from Save A Bunny are brought to her, they are returned the same day. I guess for the rescues they make special arrangements in order to keep costs down.

I paid almost four hundred for my spay…I was blown away when I first lookied into it, but I guess you can’t expect to get a spay/neuter on a rabbit done for less then two hundred, and that range you gave, while high, sounds about right -Glad you like your vet!

I forgot to mention, if the cost is a problem for you, most vets will work out a payment plan.  I find that animal doctors are more forgiving, loving and flexible about their patients than people doctors.

is staying over that long necessary? can they keep her one night instead and save you some money that way? i would ask.

Wow 2-1/2 days is a long time!  Maybe overly cautious!  We do have many low cost clinics where I live that are excellent.  That sounds like a lot of $$$ to me but if you have it then go for it.  My husband, the tight wad, would flip too.  He will come home one day soon and find another rabbit even though he said absolutely not – more $$$. So what else is new!!!

oohhhh, you got the “how could you let that stranger grope me” treatment….hhahahahah It’s amazing how much they decide they like you when someone else is trying to handle them, then you’re not so bad.

I was quoted in that price range by a local vet, but I was very uncomfortable with the fact that he was so old and arthritic in his hands that he cancelled us 4 times. We drove to the vet in dallas reccommended by the rescue, who charged us around $150 total, including 5 days of pain meds. And I really liked her, she does all the rescue spays.

i *would* say that there is no danger in calling around and getting different prices… but i know you are on a timeline with “Lil’ Miss Nip-Nip”.

so i agree that if you feel comfortable and don’t mind the price… go for it. but i would seriously ask them *why* 2.5 days is necessary. is it b/c she is older, or they do this with everybun? i have never heard of that UNLESS there were problems or complications…

Hmm that sounds like more of a bunny resort than a bunny vacation ! If you feel that the cost may cause a problem, it wouldn’t hurt to call the rescues to see if you can find a more inexpensive recommended vet.

Often, females have a more difficult time recovering from a spay than males do from a neuter, so it probably isn’t bad that the vet will be monitoring your bun for an extended time, but I don’t think that it is absolutely necessary.

I’m very happy to hear you have a vet you trust and that your bunny is going to get spayed. I have to find a vet soon and get my bun checked out also.

I know this is completely off topic and I hope I’m not being too forward but you mentioned you’ve been living in Canada for two years. Well I live in NJ and want to move to Nova Scotia but I’m not sure how is the best way to go about it. Any suggestions? Thanks
