I am a rescue person.  Dogs are my passion but I’m an equal opportunity rescuer.  I’ve worked with a few different dog groups and a ferret group.  I’d like to volunteer for our local shelter but they actually have a waiting list to volunteer for them.  (Imagine that!)

I have two dogs, three ratties, three ferrets, and now the bunny boys and I must say that as far as small animals go?  Rabbits suit me so much better than the ferrets and the rats.  Don’t get me wrong, I love my critters and I will care for them for their entire lives…but if I had looked into rabbit rescue a few years ago I most probably would have not adopted ferrets and rats.

Ferrets have their pros and their cons.  I’m a little burnt out on the cons…the main one being the poop!  They are poop machines!  And their poop isn’t easy to deal with like bunny turds are.  It’s a challenge to keep up with the daily poop, especially when you have a trio.

What I like so much about rabbits is their quiet presence.  I like that they’re happy to see me, I enjoy the daily cage cleaning and feeding routine.  I love how soft they are and the brightness of their eyes.  And I especially like that they are content to just be in the same room with me.  I can let them out of the cage and relax (my living room is bunny proofed) and they’ll come up to me every now and then to say hello.  I know they’re babies now so they’re easy and I know they’ll be teenagers before I know it…but they’ll also mature not long after that and once they’re neutered they’ll settle down and grow into well mannered boys.

I’m happy to have my bunny boys.  They should still be around when my girls leave for college, though they’ll be really old by then…and I may have to fight for custody.  My girls are rescuers too and they may actually need to live off campus so they can have some kind of critter of their own.

Anyway, I’m just so happy with my boys I can hardly stand it!  And I’m glad I found this forum.  I’m learning a lot here.

**disclaimer:  the bunny cage is not in an area of the house accessable to the dogs…and when the bunnies are out in the living room the dogs are confined to a different part of the house.  We’re very careful with our critter management over here.  Especially since my dogs are a Pit Bull and a Rottweiler.  :0)  The ferrets have been here for four years and we’ve never had an incident.  Just thought I should throw that out there.

i have to say that it is hard to be completely prepared for bunnies. they are all so different and they will keep you guessing. so please stick around and ask any and all questions you might have, and please feel free to answer questions for other people. i learn something new practically everyday… that’s why this place is so addicting!

and i know i would love to see pics of your other critters if you have any to share.

Trust me, once you’ve nip-trained a few ferrets…hyper, adolescent bunny issues are cake!

I’ve done a bunch of research recently and now I’m ready for my hand’s on training.  :0)  My daughters are going away to visit their grandparents for 10 days and I’m half way excited because they won’t be here to hog the babies!

I really can’t wait to visit the rescue.  I may start buying my pellets and hay from them since it benefits the homeless bunnies.  If I do then I’ll probably volunteer once a month or so since I’ll be trekking out there anyway.  The place is almost an hour from me (I think, haven’t map quested it yet).

Awe I know how you feel! I have always had cats and dogs and never even THOUGHT about a rabbit until my son volunteered at our local rescue and demanded we adopt Edson! I am overcome every day with love for this little guy. I wish everyone knew they were not just an animal to stick in the backyard in a hutch with no personality. Edson has brought so much fun to our family already. I too wish I had known about rabbits a long time ago!

I love Rottweilers. I have never actually known a Pit Bull – but, have heard they can be awesome. I know it is all about how an animal is raised!

Just so you know – there is a story in The Rabbit Handbook about how a pit bull was bonded with some bunny’s. Several people on this forum have large dogs that get along very well with their rabbits!
However, Ferrets are traditionally trained to hunt rabbits – not such a great mix.

I too never thought I would be a bunny owner – I love it!

I am a Pit Bull Junkie. They are my breed of choice. Unfortunately the true temperament of many pit bulls is wrecked by evil breeders who breed for looks rather than temperament. And, also unfortunately, temperament trumps training…so most nasty Pit Bulls were born that way, many times on purpose. It’s disgusting and I truely fear for my next dog. I will always have a Pit Bull in my family but I’m afraid that by the time Jezebel is gone there won’t be enough sound dogs to adopt.

Chuck will be my last Rottie. He’s my third and I’ve had bad luck with all three. He’s sweet as pie with his family but he has NO tolerance for strangers. Managing him is pretty easy for me since I’m not at all a people person, but I have to be very careful when I take him for walks. He’s got a hyper guardian instinct.

I know ferrets hunt small animals. They get separate play times. Between all my critters it’s always play time at my house!
