A long time ago, I began collecting as much of Binkles’ shed fur that I could. Every molt season, every loose tuft that came off her, every strand that I could pull out of the brush -they would all go into a big ‘bunny fur bag’.

I first got the idea when I read a while back that some angora owners sheer their bunnies seasonally and actually sell things that they weave from their shorn fur. I thought to myself, “Gosh. Those sure are some awesomely special momentos for those owners. But wait, why does it have to be limited to Angoras? Binkles sheds her fur too. Not as much, but…I’m going to try it!”

Well, I can’t exactly weave much of anything out of it. Her fur isn’t THAT long. What am I going to do with it then? I’m going to make a little Binkles-coloured bunny plushie and stuff it with it. I am also going to take a lock of it and put it in one of those ‘cremation urn’ necklaces so I can always have it close to my heart. (This is just a personal thing, but carrying around ACTUAL ashes with me would be…too awkward for me. )

…I did think at first that collecting her molted fur might be a little…odd.  I’m almost ridiculously sentimental and clingy. But now that Binkles has physically left me, I’m SO glad that I have it.

Just a little idea to throw out to everyone. Maybe some of you guys might want to start collecting your babies’ fur as well.

AAWWW what a sweet idea…it still hurts that Kokanee was molting and changing color and I never got to see how beautiful she was going to be when she was done, I wish I’d kept some of her fur-I’m glad you have some of binkles fur!!

Binkles was moulting too…though that has never meant much for her colour. Her coat constantly changed pattern monthly. If you’ve ever had (or known) an agouti bunny, you know what I mean -it’s pretty fascinating.

Just about 2 weeks ago, my mom looked over at her and observed the new ‘V’ that was coming out above her nose. “When do you think that will be above her eyes?” she asked. I pondered for a minute and replied. “…mmm about a month or two.” It made it almost to right between her eyes and-…

u_u That was one of the things I mention now -that the ‘V’ never made it above her eyes..

Maybe you could take a piece of heavy paper, like watercolor, and draw an outline on it such as a heart. Or cut a shape out of another piece. Anyway, spray glue (comes in cans) it across the whole shape. Then just press some fur onto it. Perhaps design around it with her name or memory statements and then frame it under glass so it won’t fall apart.

Glad you’re finding ways to remember her fondly.

I thought of this too.  I know in the victorian days, they did things called hair art where they took the hair from a deceased person and created beautiful woven works of art.  i always thought this would be a wonderful way to remember my bunnies, but I cannot find ANYONE who still does this.  I did manage to find a website of artisans and I emailed them, but they never got back to me.  This was the link…

I think it would be lovely to have a brooch made up of my bunnies fur.  The work, although originally a bit of a morbid idea, is beautiful to look at.

I love your idea of making a plushie and stuffing it with her fur – what a sweet idea.  I know what you mean about having their fur now that they are gone.  I have a little photo album of my poodle I had when I was a kid and tucked into one of the sleeves is a pair of blue ribbons he had tied in his ear fur after he came back from the groomers once.  They still have little bits of his fur attached and they have become my most precious momento of him…..sniff .
