earlier this year, before i switched to Oxbow and we got Max, i was buying pellets at the store.  they had changed the packaging of the brand i was getting and i was in a hurry, so i picked it up quickly, bought it and went home.  when i got home, the instant i opened it, i was like, “phew!”  the smell hit my nose so hard and i *knew* i had made a mistake.  i flipped the bag over… yup… alfalfa-based.  so i had to go back out and buy the right kind…

i bagged up the alfalfa pellets and gave it to my husband.  he took it to work and scattered it out back by where he parks his car just  to see if anything would eat it.  i figured, well… even if no one ate it, it’ll just kinda dissolve or whatever.

he told me yesterday that he noticed a couple weeks ago there is a strange grass growing right where he scattered the 5 pounds of pellets.  there had been no grass there before, just dirt.  and yesterday there was a little wild bunny munching on this grass!

he’s supposed to take a pic of it with his camera phone.  if he does, i’ll post it here.

Hmmm….I wonder if it is alfalfa. If you can grow it there it would be a nice treat if it was fresh for Max and Meadow.

here’s the pic that Mike sent me.  sorry it’s not the best quality, it’s from his cell phone, but you get the general idea.

i don’t even know what actual alfalfa looks like, and this might not be it at all… but i just thought it was strange that all of a sudden, grass is growing where there was none before…

My image search showed alfalfa has purple flowers but leaves look pretty similar to white flowered plant in your pick. My guess is the pellets added nutrients to the soil not previously there and some opportunistic weeds that favour the soil have sprouted-as they do!

I agree with jerseygirl, it doesn’t look like alfalfa to me. But what a nice snack for the wild rabbit.
