Peanut and Gizmo don’t get along and I have separated them, unfortunately Peanut escaped his pen and has had a fight with Gizmo.

His ear is got a nasty scratch and a hole in it, you can see strait through, and he has a split in the top of his ear.

I have rang the rabbit savvy vet but she is doing house calls to people that live a long way from her surgery, they said to come in at 3.30pm which is another 3 hours away. He seems ok but don’t want to risk any infections etc.

Anyone know what she may do with him?

Yikes Lisa, that sounds like a big wound!  Bunnies often go for the ears when they fight.  I don’t know much about the over-the-counter medication available in Australia, but here in the US we treat our bunnies with either Neosporin or silver sulfadiazine (Silvadene) cream.  They are antibiotics that are safe to use.  The neosporin must be the one that does not contain any pain nedications or anti-itch medications.  If you have access to one of these, you could treat the wound before you see the vet to hold off a potential infection.

            Good luck!

Thanks Osprey I will do a google search and see what the name of the cream is in Australia.

What about collodal silver? I have that in my cuboard.

Forget that one, I just read something that said do not give rabbits collocal silver, I think it means to drink but not going to risk it.

oh poor peanut!  baby got a nasty nearly through-and-through bite on her ear but by the time i found it (a couple of days later) it had signs of infection.  i went to the vet & she prescribed a ciloxin ointment for it.  normally she recommends neosporin (called polysporin here in canada) and had i found the wound sooner i’d have cleaned it up & used that.

i hope peanut feels better soon!

Hi Lisa! Alot of the bunnies who came into our shelter from a seizure (there were two hundred…) were injured. They rinsed wounds with a fifty/fifty water and hydrogen peroxide solution and then put neosporin/polysporin on them. Vibes for Peanut

Just got back from the vet, they cleaned his ear and put Silvadene cream on it, she also injected him with Metacam.

I have the cream to put on the area twice a day, Metacam three times a day and Critical care every eight hours. Gee, it is so good to get this advice before I go; everyone here is on the ball with bunnies. All the names of the medication I have read about on BB.

It’s nice to know that everything they are doing is correct. She gave his tummy a couple of taps to see if it was a little bloated I guess, she said he has no problems with his tummy. (Great relief) Thanks for the help.

Oh, she did say the poor little rabbit must have been in some pain, it hurts knowing my binky dink (my pet name for my bunnies) was in pain.

They said he may always have a hole in his ear, I don’t care he is gorgeous to me.

so peanut’s all fixed up… yay!  it’s really nice to know that the vet care you get is on par with that others are getting isn’t it?  i know there are differences here & there but this forum is such a great sounding board.  and i find it helpful to know what i’m facing before hand too lisa.  baby bun has nips from her sweet ears from her dearly departed sister brownie bun and i think they are great spots for kisses

Good to hear that Peanut is on the road to recovery.  They are giving him a lot of Metacam, that must be one nasty looking wound!  Sending healing thoughts your way.

They told me to give critical care, if he starts to eat on his own I can stop giving it to him. Good news hes eating like a mad man. LOL

It was a terrible wound, the ear was nearly ripped in half.

Oye and Ouch! Well, I am glad he got all fixed up. Keep an eye on it to make sure it is healing properly. If for whatever reason the wound still gets infected and if you notice any further swelling or pus, be sure to let your vet know asap, so an abscess doesn’t develop further. Many times a vet then will give Baytril to help the body fight infection.

                                Sending off healing vibes!
